Complete footballer, one of the greatest right backs of all time and also a great defensive midfielder. Zanetti was a monster!

Never forget how even in the most difficult matches, also when loosing badly, he would take the ball and start running forward. What an incredible asset. Nobody could stop him and it didn't matter if the play ended in a goal or not, the stadium after his tractor runs always exploded and applauded. And imagine the instant boost of motivation if you're his teammate, you're loosing and you're tired and sad, but then you see this guy, your captain, almost twice your age running the whole pitch effortlessy with the ball glued to his feet. I've never seen anything like it after he retired, grazie di tutto capitano.

A lot of youngsters can't understand just by highlights how strong Zanetti was. I think that, in two decades, I must have seen him loosing the ball just twice. To steal it from his feet you had to bring a sniper at the stadium. Amazing player, amazing professional, very nice guy, amazing captain. J.Zanetti marked an era and was, probably, the best right-back in the history of football alongside Cafù.

Everytime i see Zanetti videos or pictures i just imagine him playing for Argentina in midfield alongside Mascherano at the 2010wc. Drop Tevez from that lineup and add Zanetti n that team would have been unstoppable. With Cambiasso on the bench as a supersub... i get high thinking of that scenario

Juan Carlos Valeron when I regularly watched Spanish football from 97-2005 religiously he was honestly something else, my favourite pure playmaker of the time he was a magician he is the man who inspired so many top footballer's, Andres Iniesta and David Silva two of the finest playmakers of the past 15 years idolised him and would never have reached their heights without this man's influence and professional attitude... Valeron was special truly world class he is David Silva's idol he wears the same shirt and plays the same way, he was also Iniesta's Idol you can see his influence on his style too, Andres once claimed he'd gladly pay a lot ofoney to just watch Valeron, many credit Spain's success to his influence on their pure football when they dominated... I'm always shocked at the amount of people who don't realise just how good he was in discussions, he was that good both Roy Makaay and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink said he was the best player they ever played with... They played in that stacked underachieving Netherlands team of the 90s early 2000s that's high praise if ever I've heard it. Also maybe Recoba potential wise I think he is probably the best Uruguayan talent I've ever seen even ahead of Luis Suarez, he never fulfilled his promise he should've become a regular nominee for the FIFA world player of the year and Ballon d'Or awards, yet somehow failed miserably to get consistent form and reach his immense potential but on his day could outshine anyone else on the pitch, with his dribbling creativity spectacular goals etc. Remembered him when thinking of Zanetti... I've seen videos saying bad players nominated for Ballon d'Or video's where Alvaro Recoba was included and laughed at, which shocked me they clearly never saw him at his best El Chino was such a waste of talent. As for Zanetti, Javier embodied everything you'd want in your clubs footballers he was a world class no nonsense yet technically skilled fullback or defensive midfielder, a lot of people overlooked his attacking qualities due to his lack of goals and focused more on his energy strong warrior/leader type persona... But the way he linked with his teammates and notably Ronaldo at Internazionale was fantastic, when I watched that formidably talented inter side of the late 90s you think back and see they were massive underachievers. Honestly I think Zanetti was that skilled and energetic as a player possessing many qualities, he could've excelled anywhere he wanted on the pitch and still have a massive influential effect on his team.

Todavía sigo sin entender porque acá no hacemos como comenzó a hacer Alemania desde hace varios años ya. A desarrollar desde antes de las inferiores a jugadores que sigan un modelo y así tener una identidad. Se que la diferencia en cuanto a organización y dinero es mucha pero se puede intentar de todas maneras. Hay que trabajar mucho y lleva tiempo pero mira los moustros que se puede seguir de ejemplo centrales como passarella o el ratón bajos y livianos pero con cualidades específicas. Otros como samuel o ruggeri mas grandes y del tipo stopper. Laterales ofensivos como el juanpi o el negro ibarra. Otros como el pupi un tipos con unas cualidades físicas que le permiten ser rueda de auxilio de cualquier equipo y una garantía que te corren 180 minutos todas las fechas. Ni hablar de un 5 a lo redondo el proyecto que siempre se espera y que por el momento no llega. Un enganche a lo Román si es verdad que el futbol cambio y no se usa mas esa posición pero que importa si siempre fuimos distintos los argentinos. Ya después lo de Messi y Diego es cosa de nuestro pais que cada tanto sacamos un genio pero estoy seguro que va a aparecer uno nuevo la proxima década

Great compilation to perfectly describe who Zanetti really was in the field. The complete full-back, a true warrior. A relentless player with incredible stamina. I've watched him so many times in games marking as a defender near the corner and then... 20 seconds later after he had intercepted the ball and run with it... you have just found him in the opposite area just outside of the other box! That combo of change in direction & the ability to start/stop accelaration used to be his trademark for almost 20 years. He also played left side FB with the same ease (i consider him one of the all-time best LBs for that reason). An absolute legend of the game. So happy to watch him along with Cafu and P.Maldini storming the Serie A back then.
