Robert Shaw was robbed of an Oscar..every moment he is on screen he absolutely owns it.. unbelievable intensity in his performance, yet uncannily heartfelt and emotional talking about his experience aboard the USS Indianapolis... searing, heartbreaking and terrifying story..and all of it true

1:48 This here is one of the greatest villain introductions ever on screen! I know the shark has appeared a couple of times before this, but when this music plays and Bruce begins approaching, I get chills all the way up my spine!! The villain has come to challenge the heroes, in the same way as Dracula, after he claimed a number of victims. As Bruce circles the boat, it's his way of saying "Alright, you fools. You've brought it on yourselves!" Bruce is done hiding. He WANTS them to see him! It's at this point the heroes know that the battle has begun and they must stop him, even if it means sinking to the bottom of the sea!

And they were invented in the 1800's to take out animals a LOT bigger than a Great White! Yeah one shot ANYWHERE and BOOM whatever it hits catches an immediate case of DEAD! And they even had lines attached to the business end so they could just reel whatever it hit right on in. I guess Spielberg never heard of those guns but tell you what I woulda had a couple of those nasty things onboard.

Bruce was never scheduled to be used for the beach scenes though. They were all filmed May to early July 1974. Bruce was not scheduled to be used until the Orca based scenes. The shark is hidden in the first half of the film on purpose. The very first shark incident filmed was the pier/holiday roast scene. This was filmed in late May, in just 3 ft of water. They never had any intention of using Bruce for it. Far more of Bruce was supposed to be shown during the Orca scenes but not for the beach scenes. I hate when people try to create fake “facts” about movies to somehow make the scene “better” in their eyes. Usually it’s centered around wanting an actor’s reaction to be genuine or real, like it would somehow validate the scene. It’s called ACTING you big doofus. and the scene of Roy jumping back and walking would have been different takes done over several days.

No one has ever recaptured the suspense like Spielberg. Also, he understood the secret to the film wasn’t playing his hand, and revealing the monster at every turn. No. No entirely!! The shark not working had nothing to do with when it shows up in the movie. Its "Big reveal" in the chum scene in the third act of the film (Here) was in the script. It had nothing to do with the fact that it kept breaking down. The shark being kept "Under wraps" until the third act was a function of GOOD WRITING and a testament to how good the script was. They kept it off screen to ratchet up the tension. The fact that "Bruce" barely worked had nothing to do with where it was shown or revealed in the story. It finally shows up in the third act because Carl Gottlieb wrote it that way. And Steven only agreed to do the film if the shark was not fully revealed until the third act. @@moviesgalore9947

There is no shark film that comes close to this legendary masterpeice. What many shark films nowadays try to do is make it a gorefest or a cheesy comedy, they all seem to forget if you want to make a good shark film or even a cult classic horror movie, instead of trying to make it the most scariest, horrific and gory film, they forget if you REALLY want to make people scared, this film is a textbook definition. The music, the suspense, the paranoia and the buildup. Speilberg was a genius for not showing the shark until this point, not only does this build up suspense, but also allows the viewer to image what this beast looks like.

Fun facts: 1) Roy Scheider’s “bigger boat” line was actually an ad lib. Like most classic cinema, it worked so well that Spielberg left it in. It also explains why Robert Shaw is looking at him kind of perplexed. 2) They nicknamed the shark “Bruce” after Spielberg’s lawyer 3) Robert Shaw actually got drunk for the Indianapolis monologue, but was so intoxicated that he couldn’t do it. He thought that being drunk for the scene might improve the performance.
