This video is made of excerpts from Jay Graydon's DVD "Airplay for the Planet - the Video." The DVD contains a lot of info about Jay's guitars, amps, and other information that I left out. These are only the solos from his "Airplay for the Planet" album and his explanations of how to play them.
0:00 - Walk the Wire
3:09 - She Just Can't Make up Her Mind
7:55 - Holdin' on to Love
10:06 - Roxann
13:10 - Jay's Favorite Licks

I really don't know anyone else, then Jay that is so easy to recognize in recordings. Because they are unique, beautiful and so outstanding. Don't get me wrong. I love Luke, Larry, Landar and a few more, but Jay... well, it's something unique.

Jay has amazing technical ability. He's incredibly self aware of his process - almost describing his technique like an observer ("I don't even know what I played"). To have such a command of an instrument is rare. To deconstruct exactly how he does it from another prospective is mastery.

Jays a great guitarist ... I remover his work with Gibno Vanelli , so many great songs and classic albums by the greats ... what a player at that time I was listening to him , Carlton , al dimeola. , benson , metheny , larry coryal Some many great musicians , and just hearing the electromagnets a three piece from Tx. Featuring a young Eric Johnson they used to come to Dallas a couple times a year All these greats ... what a blessing to the ears and soul

Amazing, after almost 10 years of playing and thinking "how bad is this technique that I have?!", Jay sheds light that bending the string such that my finger goes under the string above is perfectly fine as a way to avoid unnecessary noises. If Larry Carlton does it, it's cool with me!

Terrible left hand technique, lifting the fingers so High, but the best musicians are often like that, check out Michael Brecker, the coolest saxophonist since Coltrane, awesome technical player but dreadful technique!
@dexblue
@dexblue 5 лет назад
Stefan; I understand your critique ... from classical POV and all ... but I don't think it applies to Jay; when he does a scale, he lays down his four fingers correctly; execution, time, timbre are all exquisite. The guitar is interesting like that ... if you can cut your own pathway in, and make it sound musical, well, it will let you; don't know if other instrument are beneficent in this way. Have you observed Eric Johnson's left hand fingering by any chance? Cheers - DQ
