Recall the era Jay Jay started dribbling like stands and dribbles not running guess he was the 1st to do that.. displaying skills during a football game
That's the point. Against a USA side that were just rising up the football world. I know Okocha was talented, but he did overdo his style of play. That didn't help his teams very much
Okocha is skilled, but he wasted too many chances and half of his ball passes were not accurate. That's why Kanu Nwankwo remains my number one Nigerian footballer.
Kanu was much more impactful. I especially like that he was driven even in his later years to be a breath of fresh air into the team's gameplay and it often bore fruit. Jay-Jay was peculiar. Obviously, he found a balance later in his career when he picked up his true goal scoring form and became rather prolific, for Bolton and Nigeria. If you talk about goals scored and items Erin e then Papillo stands alone at the summit, switching to the one we and the rest of the world loved the most then Jay-Jay nicks it in my estimation.
Most of his dribbles were unnecessary, he slowed his team mates down and gave opponents time to cover up. If you ever wonder why Nigeria lost to lesser teams after all these show off plays, In todays football he would not be in any first team.
You are right to some extent, he did slow the game a lot which for most part of the play was totally unnecessary. However, in today's football Okocha in my opinion would still make the first team but I think he would probably be used as a sub more often than as a starter, except as a player he decides to be more involved in the game by releasing the ball a lot quicker which of course would have made him more outstanding -in the sense that by so doing it will mean more wins for his team than losses
Many times i have seen him drawn multiple players to himself sometimes as muc as 3 and then finds a pass to his team mate who little or no pressure. Then modern footballers are so lame that even close to the 18 yard box, they would not take on their opponent but wait for a team mate to arrive to do a 1, 2 with and if there is no one they would kick the ball all the way back to their own goalkeeper for a reset of the 2 teams. Okocha would take the defenders out and even if he does not score, it would be exciting to watch unlike these boys always passing backwards to the their defence.

You all tried but you need understand back then he was given a free role. As a playmaker. The rules may change with time.. but He inspires the team with every move ..n impacts fear on the opponents and encourages his team.. with confident dribbles even in difficult situations. He is to attract players and create space for his colleagues then throw the pass. His style is not the same as Ronaldinho..(neither is Ronaldinho style d same as Messi, Messi's style is not d same as Neymar.. hokocha is unique. He Dribbles , passes, can play defensive midfield, attacking mid field , left and right wings. He was a multipurpose player.. that's why . It was his contributions to every match that made him stand out as a legendary African player. The world didn't recognize him for nothing. If u know football ..u will know that Okocha will make a first team not bench. The only problem I see is he was introduced late to football, compared to Etoo, Messi, Ronaldinho.. even wit his old age the still left a mark ..Abeg I appreciate my own. He made Nigeria/Africa proud
