'Jay Leno's Garage' returns for its fifth season on August 28 at 10 PM ET. Jay Leno, Jay Leno's Garage host, joins 'The Exchange' to discuss the return of the show.
Jay's generation could get cars for $100 bucks, work on them on your own and keep them going until they fell apart. In 1999 full coverage on a car that was 30 years old was going to cost me $3000 to insure, but only covered the blue book value, which the car was not in the book. No-Fault without collision coverage was $800. So back then it was expensive but possible for young people to get and maintain a car but it is much harder now, wages are just not equal to the cost of living. In the city of Detroit, you can have a perfect driving record and still expect to pay as much as $7000 for full coverage on a new vehicle. Young people today do want new or used cars just like everyone else, however, due to economic factors, it's much more difficult. It's easy to get a loan today but expect high-interest payments. You can save as long as it takes and still not get there. In the early years of car manufacturing, cars were marketed towards the wealthy but that changed to make it more affordable for the working man to buy one but now things are going in reverse. Most people today lease new cars because not many people can afford to own one outright. When you see the ads for less than $200 a month, it's appealing. In the 50s-60s and 70s, my parents and several other relatives bought new cars outright every 3 years or so, why? because it was more affordable and several of them were pensioners. When Reagan got into office and deregulated Wall Street that's when the cost of living skyrocketed big time and its been the same since.
@@DripDripDrip69 Conan can't hold a candle to Jay. He's a corporate shill with nothing to offer. I mean look how cool Jay is compared to him!? Over 70 years old and not afraid to ride 100 y/o motorcycles around with NO HELMET. Like I said... one of the last ''real'' ones.
Me ontenz I thought she actually did quite a good job considering how outside her profession she was going when talking about the cars. She got a great dialog going
@@RADIUMGLASS Hate stalker radium clock has to follow me around and desperately hope my comments are untrue. There true. Your life will never be a pail shadow of mine.
I have some issue with Jay, but the car stuff is so interesting and I'm not really into cars(I know very little). It's cool to see his enthusiasm and he really knows what he has. Not just blowing money cuz he has it.
Speak for yourself coward. I still keep my 1985 Supra P-type on the road with literally no job and it runs great with cold A/C, because I replaced the money in your equation with knowledge. Far more valuable.
For my generation growing up in Southern Ca. during the 70s, your car was an external representation of who you are, or at least who you wanted people to think you are. Back then, media was centralized and the automobile industry was able to craft and orchestrate the marketing of their product. Thanks to Madison Ave. cars became a large part of the American economy and our collective social psyche. The internet and hand held technology has decentralized the delivery and consumption of media. I don't know if it's a good thing or bad, but this offers a new generation a more democratized means of expressing their self identity. While using social media to craft their own personal presentation, kids have become far more media savvy and aware. There's no denying this generation is less interested in cars, and with declines in spending power I'm not surprised public trends around transportation are changing.Cars have been a huge part of my life, working on them, racing showing them, and both my teenage kids have little interest. I'd love to share that with them like I did with my father, but nostalgia aside I realized cars are not a priority in their lives the way they were for mine. Fortunately we share many other interests.
Tesla deserves to be closed down. The most atrocious build "quality" ever. Well below that of the Ford Pinto. Yeah... at least back then a car randomly catching fire was scandalous - nowadays it's just a little news article in the corner.
This interview shows why I consider journalists to be worthless. What is she an expert at? Makeup? Why wouldn't CNBC get Tim Allen to interview Jay? At least get someone to interview him about his car show that doesn't hate cars.
Jay really didn't like doing the tonight show. It was a job to him. A VERY good job that made him a ton of money. But really...just a job. On Jay Lenos Garage we see his passion for cars. He just lights up. I enjoy watching him more on the Garage show than I ever did in the Tonight Show.
Tonight show? Jay is an absolute automotive genius, and he just works way better at JL's Garage than anything else he could ever do. At JL's Garage, he's not a mere entertainer, he's not just doing a job to get paid and make us laugh (although he still does do that), he's actually doing something he's a genius at, knows more than many top-end automotive designers and engineers, following a true inner passion and that clearly jumps up on the screen like no other show I've ever seen. He's just brilliant hence clearly the most loved person in the entire automotive space right now, and probably the most loved since the damn automobile was invented! He's one of the VERY few supercar/hypercar owners that never comes off as a douche, arogant, and he never makes us feel he's in anyway superior to us like every superca owner on Yotube/TV does. To get a sense of just how cool and modest he comes off, in the YT show in a Behind-the-scenes-type-of-episode he was once cleaning his beautiful orange Miura with a rag (a 3-ish Million USD 1970s Lamborghini, of which he owns two, an orange and a yellow one) he casually and sincerely said: I really don't own any of these 150+ cars in the garage, I am just taking care of them for the next owner. If you think about it, no one truly owns something forever so that's not my motive, I do all of this as my way of contributing to the preservation of these "kinetic art-pieces" in the distant future). And you can see in his eye he truly means it. He collected 150 examples of history's most significant cars and constructed a massive garage employing a dozen mechanics because he truly has desire of preserving these cars for future generations, and now doing this show for pennies relative to his past work but doing it because he truly enjoys it and has a pure desire for spreading knowledge of these cars to young people. In Jay Leno's Garage he loves what he's talking about and it truly does show, unlike when he would talk about politics and matters he has no true personal interest in. Letterman for example did care deeply for politics and it also showed. Jay never did so he was always merely excellent at doing the Tonight Show, but now he's on a whole other level beyond excellent! Another cool story: a 12 year-old kid wrote Jay a letter saying "I told friends in school that I go on rides with you in the Countach (again a 1-million-dollar value Lamborghini) and that you're my uncle. Would you ever give me a ride to school in your Countach to show my friends I am not a liar? In Jay's words: Well the kid is obviously a liar so I thought that was very funny, so one morning I took the car to his address before school time and asked his mother if I could give Belly a ride to school. She went nuts and the kid almost had a heart attack so I gave him a ride to school, parked up front and waited for the bus to arrive and as soon as the kids got off we opened up the scissor doors (kids go crazy for Lambo doors) and said "Have a good day Belly and say hello to your Mom for me" and the kids went beserk OH HEY COUNTACH! I just found his passion for the Countach and him being a pathological liar both impressive at the age of 12 so it was just all very funny, it made me laugh. You know a kid like that will own a Countach someday when he makes it big. So yes, Jay is a true class act and one of the best personalities in the history of TV.
Haha I’ll take Uber, Uber sucks. The only reason Kevin O Leary thinks ride sharing is the way to go is cause he is rich and has equity in the company. It’s far more expensive to ride share everywhere, I did it for a year and I spent at least 100 dollars a week and sometimes spent 150-250 a week doing it, and still took the bus places. You have to constantly rely on people and you can’t ever just take off to your own place not to mention the professionalism and vetting they do for the drivers is basically non existent with a multitude of there drivers doing it cause they can’t find work elsewhere. I ended up riding with crazy people, unprofessional people and even the occasional drug addict. It got to the point were literally 2/3 rides were bad on average. I couldn’t be happier to get away from ride sharing. It’s frankly dangerous for many reasons.
1] If you look at the facts, Jay did NOTHING to Conan. Conan was too weird for the mainstream Tonight show {terrible idea from the start}, it was sinking with him, and Jay took it back when it was offered. 2] Jay has shown himself to be a genuinely good guy for decades, not the the kind of "fraud" that can be pulled off over that much time. 3] Jay is indeed vilified by people like Stern, Kimmel and Letterman and no greater badge of honor could one have.
Yea she's pretty cute. But she would be of more use on her back than in a seated position. Or on all fours ...on her knees... But you see my point. If you're going to interview a car guy you should at least have a clue about cars. Or in her case a clue about anything.
@john rivinius: why do you say that? do you feel any of Jay's words or concepts were difficult to comprehend? what do you think was to complicated for the interviewer to understand? please elaborate..

Love Jay and his wit. Love his show BUT CNBC and their lawyers have almost ruined it. Doesn't matter what they are driving. Apparently 99% of the time they are not allowed to drive over 40 mph anymore
my Tesla Model 3 is the best car I've ever owned, it's so fun to drive and road trip in! We'll see if the full self driving gives it Mclaren level profits!!! The TSLAQ stock-shorters and oil company investors are the only ones arguing viciously against Tesla... they also see how good they are and are doing everything they can to put in the kibosh!
Sasquatch 2001 yeah so fun to stop every 200 miles and spend 40 minutes only getting to 80%. Such advanced tech. And so fun if the car drives itself! I mean who wants to drive a car on a scenic road trip.
@@craigyirush3492 It is fun, I got pulled over on my last road trip for speeding 78 in a 75... pro tip, roads get slippery when wet! basically the trooper wanted to ask about the car hahahaha. No ticket, whew. PS, don't believe everything EXXON tells you about EVs.
@@craigyirush3492 Just took a 10 hour drive - 700 mile trip in my Model 3. Basically stopped 3 times for 20 minutes. Would have stopped anyway 3 times since my family demands to stop and use the bathroom. I could have stopped just twice for a little longer each stop but family needs to stop anyway. By the time everyone uses the bathroom and gets their drinks/snacks it pretty much has been 20 minutes. Midway we stopped to have lunch while charging for 20 minutes since we were driving all day but ended up charging for more like 30 since we couldn't eat that fast and gave us a little extra range. This is on V2 Superchargers which peak at 150 kW rate until it tapers. You start the trip fully charged with 300 miles of range and drive for 2 1/2 hours then stop for 20 minutes. Then drive for another 2 1/2 and stop for lunch for 20 minutes. Then drive for another 2 1/2 and stop for 20 minutes. Then drive the last leg for 2 1/2 hours with plenty left over. We actually had a lot of charge left over when we arrived since we stopped longer at lunch. When the V3 250 kW Superchargers go in then we will likely be finished charging before everyone does their business at each stop.
Once again I hear the oil companies getting shade thrown on them. Where do you think the vast amounts of plastic in the car comes from? Where do you think the heat that's used to form the glass and metal comes from? Not to mention the machinery used to obtain all the materials used in construction of the car. God people can be so simple.
@@jamesmacleod9382 pretending people think an EV has 0 impact on the environment is just a dumb lie you've been told that every EV buyer believes. not so...
Actually he said electric is the future. Tesla may or may not be around for that future. It's more likely they will get bought out by one of the other large companies. They can't operate at a loss forever.
mr Dave put mr Leno on the map. mr Connan is a diff generation. their shows targeted different audiences, they were all great for what they were doing. I can go into details, but so can you when you have the time..
Tabs T because Ford and Toyota pay huge money to CNBC for advertising and they’ve been trying to strong arm Tesla to pay for advertising but they refuse. CNBC is a bully network. That’s why they hated on crypto because banks pay them advertising money and crypto doesn’t pay anything
Benjamin Burkhardt how? They have to pay profit margins to sales people... how dumb is that. Also they don’t have gigafactories or a charging network. Not only that... they don’t have autopilot!!
Philip Emanuele - Sales people are at the dealerships which are not owned by the manufacturers. Batteries are a commodity and low margin. What car company would want to own that? GM does have autopilot technology already, it’s called Super Cruise.
Modern cars today are all designed by computers, consequently they all pretty much have the same looks. Sure they can be fuel efficient, and are for the most part reliable, but they’re starting to look boring. Older (useable) cars from the late 40’s to say the mid Nineties were still being designed by hand and had some thought put into the design which gave a car character. Modern cars have hardly any character. If you showed a young kid a selection of designs, it’s odds on they would find older cars more interesting to look at.
Zaphod Beeblebrox And the older cars had something else going for them that today's golf carts don't have and never will... The older cars has souls. Many were considered part of the 👪 family, passed down through generations. These crossovers and SUV's don't have any of the panache or style of, say, a '48 Roadmaster or '53 Cadillac, or the shoebox Fords of the '50s. They have no road presence, and they don't command attention. Today's cars are just.....bland. They can get you from A to B and all points in between, but do you want to be seen in them? I, for one, don't.
I really like the way Jay reinvented himself. I do know from watching past interviews that he prefers doing this series than they tonight show as he can discuss what he is interested in.
he did reinvent himself,. He went from doing the Tonight Show to doing Jay Leno's Garage. The Tonight Show and this one are totally different and have no similarity. If you take David Letterman who I also like. His new Netflix series, while it is a different format. It isn't to far away from what he did before. Just like the late Doris Day. When she retired from acting and singing. She also reinvented herself by working in animal welfare.
I admit that I had my doubts about going electric at first, but now that I own one, those doubts were just silly. It's been life-changing! As Jay said, it really is the future. With its regular software updates, the car actually improves with age; just like your smartphone!
Brad Smith I charge in my garage at night while I sleep, so I never have to go pump gas...ever. I can run the heat or AC with my garage door down since there’s no exhaust, so I can heat up the car in the winter while I get ready for work. The car updates its software over the air to add new features all the time. So yes, it has been life changing. Call me a nerd all you like...I’ll be laughing all the way to the bank. Being a nerd sure does pay well 🤓. #stayinschool
I don't really watch TV anymore it is so disgusting all they do is bash the President but I love Jay's RU-vid channel watch it every week . Thanks Jay for being a real entertainer.
XP-8 TIM doesn’t matter if you can smoke his or my gas car......I’ll be having more fun driving my old sports car instead of travelling in a car that drives me
@@ConemantheBarbarian You don't have to use the autopilot if you don't want to, besides do you think the Tesla would be Jay Leno's favorite car if all ever did was drive itself? The Tesla Model 3 is particularly fun on a windy mountain road!
XP-8 TIM I wasn’t referring to autopilot. Most modern cars especially the electric ones isolate you from the driving experience. After commuting in my daily I crave the raw experience of my sports car. Shifting for myself, more precise natural steering feel. Loud exhaust. I’ve driven a Model 3 Tesla. It was too isolated. Electric cars are getting better but still a long way from me wanting one
@@ConemantheBarbarian Fair point, but I think the dynamics are there for the Model 3. It handles really well! For me I get an adrenaline rush every time I feel that instant torque! Whenever I have to drive a gas car, even a stick, no matter how fast I shift down, it still feels slow by comparison
Electric cars aren't new. There been around since 1900s. I'm surprised Jay didn't mention this. The only thing new is the technology has gotten better.
Hectic Erectic I was surprised as well. I know history well enough and that the electric car preceded the internal combustion engine. Seems like an important fact if we’re talking about automobiles. I look forward to electric cars, specifically those powered by fuel cells.
Jay is right that there are quite a few older cars that are good investments. Muscle cars, for example. Wish I'd kept my '69 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum that I bought used for 2k in '72. Worth over 50k now, at least
They smell absolutely disgusting. The toxic pollution they shit out is completely unbearable. Put your mouth over the exhaust pipe and still tell me that that car is a good investment
Disagree on electric power. There are problems with it that probably are insurmountable: recharge time (300 mile range is fine for daily driving, but not long distance -- a single person can easily drive 700 miles a day); the non-renewable, finite resources needed to create batteries (much of them found in hostile territories like China); and the waste from batteries. Even if battery capacity were doubled (won't happen -- they already are near the limits of physics) range still wouldn't equal fossil fuels. The only reason electric power is being sold and developed today is because we are being forced to subsidize it.
Oil is subsidized. Subsidize EVs just put them on a level playing field. And the thing about charging is that you don't have to sit here wait for it to charge. You charge it when you sleep, or during road trips when you have to stop and eat. Batteries can be recycled. Old school lead acid batteries are already the most recycled products out there, so there's no reason to think that lithium-ion batteries can't be the same after mass adoption.
And you still have a bag phone.... because there is never any innovation that solves problems. Batteries are advancing all the time and your statement about them being at their "limits" is simply stupid.
*Jay Leno The Man The Myth The Legend* been watching Jay Leno's Garage For A Long Time & Recently I Been Watching It Back to Back & I Was Thinking In My Head Damn Does He Still Do This Show Or ? Just To Find Out Hes Bring It Back😈🔌
My wife and I went 7000 miles in the last three weeks from Ohio to LA and back to see the West, we went through 17 states and we never had a problem finding gasoline. I did see a few electric chargers for electric cars, but I wouldn't want to depend on them.
Plus they need to get the charge times way down. If you had to wait 4-6 hours every time you "fill up" to go 300 miles, you'd probably still be on that trip for another few weeks lol. That being said, 80% of people hardly actually do anything but go to work and around the area they live, so you probably will see alot more of them on the road. Lots of Tesla's in Oregon these days. I see probably a dozen or more a day where i live.
electric cars are not worth it, and waht are you gonna do with all the old/broken batteries? recycling is not an option. i say we should keep using gasoline and diesel.
Awesome drive. Every American should visit the Smithsonian and drive across the West. Hwy 50 from the West Coast to Colorado is awesome. I think the hostess would prefer taking the company jet.
@Paul Kojack That’s not true. Teslas take about 20 mins to charge to 50% and 40 mins to 80%. And it’s only improving each year. It takes about 10 hours to fully charge at home.
Vanquish Media And even if they did, the prices are too far into the stratosphere for even us baby boomers. We have priced ourselves out of reach with everything. Something has to come along to whack the prices of homes and cars back in line.
Not true. Young people want to buy cars just like everyone else but they don't have the wealth the baby boomers had. If a baby boomer didn't earn much from a job, they inherited it. Also, baby boomers had it made when it came to finding a job.
@@VanquishMediaDE In 1970 you could get a new Cadillac for under $7000, a new Chevy-Ford for $3000 and you got a nice car. When Reagan got in, the cost of living tripled and nothing has changed. two other criteria he missed....generally...if the top goes down the price does up, as well as avoiding family cars (4drs, station wagons or SUVs. ) There are exceptions like woody station wagons from the 30-50s but generally these are bad investment. Look at how much a Porsche Cayenne Turbo SUV or ML55 AMG does for compared to a 911 Turbo or SL55 of the same year.
mark g I wouldn't say that about station wagons just yet. Some of them can fetch a good roll of quarters if the 🌟 🌟 are in alignment. And the Wagon 👑 Queen Family Truckster raised the station wagon's profile. There was even a custom Pontiac wagon that sold for $47,000 once owned by John Wayne. And you occasionally see wagons with surfboards tied to the roofs. You have to catch them at the right time.

The Exchange host Kelly Evans says @1:44 to Jay Leno, “…your show has flourished even while America’s love affair with the car in general seems to be fading; [am I] right? You know the way it looks, like, young people these days barely want to get a driver’s license.” I can’t stay silent after a comment like this: First, after stating America’s love affair with the car is fading, she asks, “…right?” but never allows time for a reply. Evidently assuming her - now shown to be only opinion statement - is true she continues with another broad statement that “young people” barely want to get a driver’s license. Another opinion based on absolutely NO facts whatsoever! What triggers me (using the current PC phrase meaning what annoys me) is that people living in major metropolitan plantations such as NYC, DC, Miami, Atlanta, and LA (to name a few) think that their experience is THE experience of ALL people everywhere. They have NO concept of a life or thoughts outside of their metro bubble worldview. When my daughter turned 16, that morning she was down taking her driving test to get her license and that afternoon she was heading out of the driveway to no parent anchor “freedom.” (Believe me, I performed my parental duty long before this moment came…and she knew Dad’s rules for uninterrupted driving privileges.) And my daughter was not unique - every kid turning 16 sought their license, too! Then, in the comments below, Vanquish Media and Cornell Green say, “…Most young people have no interest in driving or owning cool cars… And even if they did, the prices are too far into the stratosphere for even us baby boomers. We have priced ourselves out of reach with everything. Something has to come along to whack the prices of homes and cars back in line…” It appears these comments focus on the two words, “cool cars” and whatever their understood meaning between the two is. To me, a cool car or SUV, is one that is stylish, in good shape, reliable, and affordable. And I’m here to say there’s a HELLOVALOT of used cars / SUVs that fall under this category available for sale in the US today that are affordable. I don’t know if they match the “cool cars” of VM or CG’s comment, but they are out there… Now if you can only muster purchase amounts of US$500-US$1000 then, yes it will be more difficult but not impossible - however amounts of US$5000 will bring a plethora of opportunities. For example, YT provides videos of vehicle year, make, and model that are best buys within the US$3000-US$5000 range. My point in this text is twofold: 1) that the interviewer Kelly Evans is only filled with erroneous and shallow worldview assumptions about “America’s love affair with the car” and “young people these days barely want to get a driver’s license.” I reject her worldview opinion and say that if you get off the metropolitan plantations you will see and experience the REAL American car / truck / SUV / motorcycle driver. And 2) one doesn’t have to drive a ’68 RS SS Camaro, a ’71 Plymouth Superbird, or a comparable ‘Cuda, Cougar, or Mustang to have a “cool car.” There are many reliable, stylish, vehicles that one can purchase. And as far as houses go, the same is true: new home prices are outrageous!! But a 10-15-year-old home is still modern, most likely has landscaping and other upgrades already installed, and can be purchased easily at 1/3 to ½ the price of a new home…a price “whack” isn’t necessary.
As a car guy I really need his show to help me get through the hard times, my son is getting involved in cars, as a veteran with some problems need this , thank you Jay

May be,he`s right about the future, but electric cars are i_phones on wheels. No fascinating sound ,computer design, no fervor. Nothing for real "petrolheads" !
I think Jay's correct on EVs but I don't feel the adoption will be quite as quick. At some point we'll have no choice as we'll reach Hubbert's Peak and production rates will enter an irreversible decline. The world's consumption of oil has jumped so much that we're literally draining oil fields. Perhaps for this reason alone it would be good for a significant percentage of drivers to switch to electric as peak oil would get pushed back a few decades and people will be able to drive their ICEs longer. I think many people will eventually adopt EVs as their daily commuter car as their dependability is so high and their cost-to-own is so low. For these reasons their convenience factor can't be ignored and their value as a daily beater can't be beat. People will still own gasoline vehicles for long haul convenience and as heavy duty work vehicles (trucks). They will also keep them as hobbies because lets face it, many Americans find it fun to pull wrenches on mechanical contraptions, especially old cars. I bought a used Leaf for dirt cheap and use it as my daily beater. It keeps a lot of mileage off of my gasoline vehicles. You can't kill these old Nissan Leafs, literally nothing goes wrong with them unless you abuse the battery packs by using Fast DC charging a lot (especially when its over 100 F).

Their is always a hot dog stuck on a car antenna for Jay to take off three years later and put it on a bun, eat and give off that yummy look on his face
So if the younger generation doesn't like cars, why are there cars on the road still? Shouldn't the amount of cars be dwindling down more than 20 year ago?
Dear. Jay. The. Batter. Had not so much. Chance. Yet. So the. Can. Drive. So. Long. So. You. Not. Flow. The. Engineering. Technologically. As. Well. Old. Chap. It’s take. A cobble of years. Before the can. Drive. 350. To 400. Mile s on. One chance
I use to watch Jay's late night show for years. Watched the first season of Jay Leno's Garage on MSNBC until the show went off the air and became You Tube show. I love what Jay's Leno's garage has become which is a You Tube sensation i mean how could it not lol.
I think “Tesler” makes fine cars. They’re likely to go bankrupt.... but they do make neat cars (+suv). Though if I were a true, a real, environmentalist... I’d utilize public transport... or at least ‘consider’ carpooling. More “single passenger vehicles” electric cars (or not), will NOT solve the problem(s). Thanks for the video.
Jay's out of touch these days. Electric car fanboy and like fruitcake Musk thinks he can predict the future. He's simply lost in his collection and how much it's worth.
