Jayant Bhandari Doubles Down on His Contrarian Outlook for India’s Economy

Jayant Bhandari has never shied away from controversy. SmallCapPower’s viewers may remember his comments in our previous interview where he claimed many Indians who graduated from university could not even “write their own names". Catching up with us again at PDAC 2017, the analyst at Anarcho Capital Inc. rebuts the overwhelming number of negative RU-vid comments his interview received, saying “I’m increasingly more pessimistic about India when I see so-called educated people responding and contradicting me with curse words, not facts.” He continues to offer further evidence to support his position that India’s economy will not grow as fast as other experts predict, pointing to the country’s monetary policy, strong nationalistic tendencies and clumsy political leadership, while expressing his frustration for the country in which he was born and raised. Nonetheless, he feels that there is one thing Indians could do to better their economic future - find out what it is in our interview.

Present India under Modi wants to do away with English so there is no need to learn to spell January or February rather they would like the whole of India to learn the Arabic-Persian mixed with Sanskrit alphabets called Hindi thus ensuring world dominance soon in all walks of life.

Mohit Arora is right. But the speaker Jayant Bhandari is picky in his statistics by choosing favourable ones. Some points he made- even Indians criticise Modi government for certain acts of commission. Overall India must learn from such observations as Bhandari made.

The way Indians behave and react to Jayant's pessimistic views is the same way Chinese behave and react to criticism during the Qing Dynasty. It only took 2 Opium Wars, multiple mass rebellions, dozens of unequal treaties, and foreign invasion for Chinese people to wake up. China learns from its own and as well as others' mistakes. 5:53 Jayant Bhandari is right, Indian do not want to do business with China, Modi has no long-term vision, why build the train with Japan standard, India should build the train system by using Chinese standard so that they can connect to Nepal and China in the future, and send goods to China by train and many Chinese businesses would like to go to India set up factories and bring "make in India" to China. If you use Japan standard on the railway, the distance between the two rails by Japan's code is different from that of China's code, consequently, Indian train unable to run in China. India becomes a landlocked country. Also, if India sincerely makes friend with China it can get a good relationship with Pakistan so that Indian can build a railway all the way from India, through Pakistan, to Europe, and send "make in India" to Europen countries efficiently, ...., becoming part of "one belt one road" system, unfortunately ------------------------ Modi has no vision. Nobody wants to build a factory in India (for exporting) if India can't deliver goods to Europen countries or China efficiently.

Today we have replaced Russia on 4 th place having maximum foreign reserves. Agricultural sector is booming. IT sector is expanding. Electric cars are on the road to become a common reality. What Hindutva he is speaking about? Hindus accept modern science with open arms.

We should allow more chinese companies in india which can train indians and give them jobs lifting them out of poverty. I think debt trap is just a western propaganda to discourage countries to trade with china. But remember ultimately china is the future the so called western democracy such as US won't come to our rescue. For them the only thing matters is 'America First.

I don't understand why he is doing such a basic mistake, let me explain- GDP of china now - 16 trillion GDP of usa now - 22 trillion (I am comparing nominal, not PPP, if I compare PPP China has already passed USA) GDP of china 1990 - 400 billion GDP of usa 1990 - 6 trillion Imagine using his logic in 1990, china can never catch up to USA as their gdp is 12x. If they just grow their gdp by 2% they have gdp growth per capita of 1000 USD. But China even if they grow by 9% they only grow their per capita GDP by 360 USD. This is very stupid comparison, as it is comparing already developed USA with developing china. China, since they embraced good economic policies, was able to achieve high economic growth. Same way, comparing Indias current GDP to China's right now is silly. It's like comparing a student with Sundar Pichai. What you should compare is what Sundar Pichai was doing when he was a student, with the student. Compare chinas GDP of when it was in India's stage currently. That is compare china in 1990 with india now. Because that is where India is positioned right now, China in 1990 had startup boom, with large foreign investments, and rapid change in business culture, which is what India is experiencing right now. Even China in 1990 didn't have good education, and very low English speaking population, with large population working in agriculture. Make fair comparisons, comparing China right now to India is silly, compare with what it has done in past and see if India is on same track.

Indians always like to say China started their economic reforms how many years before India etc... but the reality is no country will be able to replicate what China has done in the past 30 years. 1. China was growing at double digits throughout the 90s and 00s and as late as 2011/2012. India has only achieved double digits one time in the same time frame. 2. China doesn't suffer from the social problems of India in ways that religion/caste restrict their labor force, particular women participation in the work force, education wise universal education China is far ahead of India. 3. China industrialized before mass automation, India's hundred of millions workers will not have the same opportunity to ride the industrialization/manufacturing wave china went through.

Name one nation which has prospered at China's benevolence and i would come over to your side. You mentioned that Chinese system is better than democratic setup but i beg to differ with you on this. The Chinese consider nobody as their peer and have no notion of liberty, equality and fraternity among the comity of nations....Pakistan is a great example of disastrous client state. It takes only a committed leadership ( democratic or otherwise ) to fuel the growth of a nation but agree that India lacks visionary and honest leadership and that mainly drags India down.

Mr. Bhandari, you are just concentrating in numbers and estimates, but what you Don't understand is that in order for China, the ( CCP) to achieve such an economic power in the last 30 years, they did it by not keeping their word and promises to the United States. The USA, is the country that saved China, starting with Presidents Nixon, Carter, Clinton, who pushed for them to enter the WTO and Obama who by looking the other way, also helped, while the CCP did not keep their part of the agreement, which was for the China to make changes in their government system and institute reforms. Reforms in their policies regarding Human Rights, freedom for Chinese people, and be transparent when dealing with all the countries around the world. Instead they hid their main agenda which was just to benefit from the Capitalism system and knowledge of the United States. China under the ruling of the CCP, have stolen, copy, deceive, lied and misinformed the United States and in the present has continued to take advantage from countries all over the world, using the same tactics. So my question to you Mr. Bahandari is, do you agree that a country should behave and act in the way that the Chinese government has acted, in order to achieve their economic goals,? And how would you feel as an Indian citizen, if the Indian government has acted in the same way as the Chinese government did, in order for India to show the impressive economic numbers and projections that you are so proud and impressed to point out about the Chinese government.? Don't critise your country instead find the proper venue to express your observations without disrespecting and offending your country fellow citizens.

I will not agree that we should open the borders for China and start trading and learning with them , it's not about being prejudice and nationalist. He said that Pakistan allowed them to make the corridor but it wasn't for free, Pakistan had to take loans from them, China is exploiting them and till the time they realise it, everything will be almost destroyed. Mr. Bhandari gives a static comparison of China versus India which does not give any context as to the difference over time. Economies are not static over time; they grow or decline. Of course, he seems to like the controversy he rakes through his views, tempting the responses he then complaints about. Just to fill in the blanks he left, both India and China were approximately at par economically by the early 1980s, when the economic graph began to diverge significantly. What were the reasons? Well, in China'a case, after the tens of millions of Chinese who wilted away under Mao's experiments (something Mr Bhandari dare not mention!), Deng Xiaoping and some other Chinese leaders wisely decided to chuck away communism and experiment with state capitalism. India, avowedly socialist, decided to trod the beaten path and continue as before. First a trickle, then a deluge, the differences in economic approach began delivering massive results by the turn of the century. China's economy really took after 2001, when they joined WTO. Two things worked in their favour - they tinkered with their currency, keeping it artificially low so their exports would be cheap. Secondly, they flooded markets with low-cost goods. They adopted the Singapore model of assembly manufacturing, where for instance, they would import a semiconductor plate that was 70% done, make it 100% then sell it as Made in China. India, thanks to her stupidly rigid labour laws and plant setup laws at the time, completely missed the boat. She still continues to do so, even when manufacturing in China is shifting to Vietnam. Also, the Chinese played to their strengths - they did not go for high-skilled professional tasks at first; rather they went for mass low-cost assembly manufacturing; and they still struggle with the international language, English. Indians used this advantage to compete, and you have Bangalore. India really missed the boat on low-cost assembly manufacturing, concerned as she was with the Middle East (and her domestic communal vote banks). The Look East Policy, then Act East Policy, have all come too late for India. Is it any surprise our SE Asian partners look at us with a sense of amused bewilderment when we approach them? Where was India when Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan were doing their thing? All these countries are on the verge of becoming developed nations. And all of them have a full 20-year lead on India. While India was busy dealing with Pakistan and her own secular circus, East Asian countries were busy improving incomes. The economy was never a priority in India except for the occasional hue and cry over the price of onions. But Mr Bhandari is right on the state of the Indian educational system - it is true that the vast majority of graduates being churned out from the country's educational institutions that are not IITs or IIMs are incapable of basic tasks. I happened to meet a business graduate from Hyderabad who did not know accounting. Well, how do you run a business without knowledge of accounts? Widespread state interference in the educational system, together with the debilitating influence of reservations and affirmative action - disadvantaging merit and talent for the sake of diversity, has wreaked havoc on the quality of India's universities. The degrees being handed out are barely worth the paper its printed on. For a free country, Indian graduates are inadequately sceptical and inadequately innovative, as a result. They are programmed to obey, not inquire respectfully and question everything. Strangely enough, this is against the very tenets of India's own ancient philosophical discourse, which prizes scepticism and argument over everything else. There is no systematic method of appraising apprenticeships and technical training in India's various workshops. So much value, generated in hitherto informal industries such as sculptures, painting, machine repairs, tradesmanship and craftsmanship are not formally captured because of the lack of a formalised register for recording training and experience. There ought to be more Indian students who study abroad, not just in the West, but also in the leading of Asia such as Hong Kong, Singapore, KL, Bangkok, Shanghai and Manila, just to see what other countries have done to improve their economies. Mr Bhandari blaming India's lethargy in economics on Hindu/Indian nationalism is misplaced, treating it as if it were unique to India, and giving us an insight on his political leanings. Wonder what happens in China when Shinzo Abe pays respects at the Yasukuni Shrine Bhandari? And wonder what the Uyghurs have to go through these days? Yup, nationalism of the worst kind exists, indeed thrives in China. If anything, Indians need more nationalism, not the type where enemies are sought to be destroyed (like in China; and sadly in India, the anti-Pakistan type), but one that can cultivate optimism, resilience and self-confidence. What one hears typically from an Indian today is "Yeah, we can't do it like the Chinese or the Japanese" then proceeds to give a shopping list of reasons why, rather than seriously questioning why, and making improvements. Indians in India make USD 1,800 on average a year. The same Indians outside India make USD 50,000 on average a year. They are the richest ethnic group in whichever society they find themselves in. If anyone said Indians cannot make it, they ought to be kidding. The Indians outside India number about 30 million. They'd be one of the richest countries if taken as a unit. Mr Bhandari's admonition of India in not buying into China's OBOR plan is also flawed. The OBOR is a fanciful Chinese idea to dump their excess manufacturing capacity on the rest of the world, and partners such as Pakistan are already reeling under the burden of the loans raised to support these projects, mostly of questionable financial merit. Even to the casual eye, it seems foolish to build a railway over the tallest mountains in the world to reach the sea over India, when ocean trade is a hundred times more efficient, and cheaper. Try selling that to another gullible schmuck Bhandari!

If numbers are what puts a countries development, every mathematician will be rich, india and china were richest countries before 18th century and they both are developing towards that goal. China was growing at almost 16 percent but now it grows at 6.3 and it could go down as people grow older. Its one child policy ensured less people. But india has highest number of people in there twenties who will start working and generate more income. India will be next china as wages are rising in china, where as more people are joining the workforce in india. Indian wages are comparatively lower than china.
