Jaybird X4 review: The newest iteration is better for a reason 

Why didn’t they switch to usb-c? Didn’t even upgrade the battery life as well from the X3, I’ll pass.

My x3 went in the washing machine 3 - 4 times and they are still working perfectly Pretty water proof of you ask me haha

I got the X3 pretty much because of the app (and the app is awesome). But the IPX cert is worth the upgrade. Jaybirds have sounded great forever. And they have always been light and comfortable. I really like the wire wrap harness that was provided with the X3, I don't like the dangling excess cord that you get with a tightener (like shown here on the X4).

I'm still rocking the x2 ... Someone needs to make ear buds with ldac Bluetooth 5 and ipx7 rating

All they need to do is ditch the proprietary charging clip and have the battery built in one of the earbuds with usb c port for charging. Then make it Bluetooth 5 Looks like I'll be rocking my jaybirds x1 for another year.

I bought the X3 for $50 for Black Friday at Best Buy. I’m good

Man, just bought Jaybird X4s and all I can say is they are the most amazing headphones I ever had ! Best sound ever, best of the best ! I’ve had a lot of Bluetooth earbuds, Bose soundsport (crap) JBL E25bt (very good, bought 4 times) JBL Free (good true wireless earbuds) JBL Reflect Mini 2 (crap overpriced very bad sound), but the X4’s are just the best compared to those. What a masterpiece.

Did jaybird fix the voice prompt and beep volume or give us the ability to turn them off for the X4? It was ridiculously loud in the X3 and was not adjustable...

Doesn't sound like much of an upgrade. Honestly who cares about the waterproof rating when they were already pretty water resistant?

Thanks for the review. X4 pairing with Apple Watch was smooth and the sound quality is excellent for this price range. The EQ gave the the added boost for what I need when I am pacing on the road.

My biggest problem with the X3 is at random times it’ll say “headphones connected “ when it’s already connected and it does this multiple times. I understand it can connect to two different devices at once but it’s super annoying.

I dont like the cord adjusting system on these. I liked the x3s where it was flush with the back of my head. If they didnt change the adjustment cord thing, I would've bought these but I'm sticking with the x3s

You should use them with the over-ear configuration. Much more comfortable when running!

Wish these were Bluetooth 5 and I would rather a larger control area so I can plug in a charging cord instead of dealing with a cradle.

Wow it seems like yesterday I bought the blue buds x and they still work perfectly fine. Sure the battery doesn’t last as long but it’s not a big deal

The X3 annoys the shit out of me how easy the ear bud tips get loose and lost. Super flawed design, looks like the X4 uses the same flawed design. I've had to buy replacement tips because they will eventually get too loose to stay on the ear buds.

Listening to this on the x3. Only thing with the x3 I found was unbalanced wegith between the two earbuds due to the heavyish control unit. Nice to see a change in the tightening loops. The x3 tightened wasn't great.

I have owned the X2 and X3s I didn't think the jump in price between X3 and X4 at the time was worth it, but those softer wings on the X4 look nice... the wings on X2 and X3 are still rigid.

I disagree I still think the X3's are amazing I had them for almost two years now, I live in the DMV where it floods in the summer and we have blizzards that bring us into the negatives during the winter and I can tell you these things are tough. They charge fast and the only thing I ever had to change were the ear buds. They've been tangled up in my pockets multiple times and still work perfectly. If you have cut off issues I found it's because of the phone you have not the earphones itself. Definitely still recommend and would by then again in a heartbeat.

Ive been using my X3 for more than a year now and it's still in good condition.

Disappointed Jaybird decided to lose the micro-usb input on the control module. The X3 held that advantage over the Freedoms while offering the trade off between weight and convenience that differentiated the two models. Overall the design changes look fresh, i.e 1) especially the ribbon cable and 2) the update to the wingtips.

I owned X2 X3 and the only reason i would buy X4 is because after 1 year use my Right side seems to always fail and I assume is due to water damage or a bad design with the old due clip adjustment system where it could compress the wire so much it break the connection and makes the earbuds fail after constant use. I hope X4 will not fail after one year.......

I've had the X3 for nearly a year now and they work fine. The sound is great after tuning them with the app. Unless you really need the waterproofing, I recommend the X3's.

My X4 right side is now not working properly. I believe it has some problems with the wire connection right from remote control, as I move it I notice the sound of wire disconnection making the sound I could hear from the bud.

My X2 still going strong after 3yrs! It is sturdy and strong

I have to x3's and love everything about them except for the fact that the war tips come off very easily after a short time. When you first put them on they are fine but that doesn't last long. I wish jaybird would find a more secure way for them to stay on the earbuds.

I bought a pair of these and agree on all accounts except when he spoke about sound quality. Especially when he said, “Not bad if you want to sing along to your music while you’re working out, but not the best for hearing the nuances in your favorite tracks - they just seem to be lacking in clarity a bit.” I have used many different headphones, earbuds, and sound systems and done thorough research and them all. The reason he was not finding great clarity is because he was using the “flat EQ” on the Jaybird app. Anyone who knows anything about EQ is that “flat” is not good. It muddies the highs and hides the lows. Tweak the sound yourself or, like me, find a preset made by an audio engineer and the sound becomes incredible and extremely clear. These are my favorite earbuds I’ve ever owned and, believe me, that’s a lot of earbuds.

My X2's just died on me a week ago, lasted me two years. I'm definitely going to pick these up.

Owner of the X3s here. Couple of problems with the Jaybirds if you run regularly. Like the most liked comment i went through multiple foam tips. They degrade quickly. The biggest flaw with the design which still hasn't changed from the X3 is the exposed charging contacts. Once exposed to sweat, it basically screws them over time and then after that no mater what you do, they won't come back to life. I experienced this on the X3s and found myself searching for answers. Now looking for new headphones and thought I'd see if Jaybird had made the right upgrades. Clearly not. Google Jaybird X4s not charging and all the same problems remain. Come on Jaybird, sort it out.

My X3 survived through the a full round in the washing machine when I forgot it in one of my pockets and came out working like a champ, so while they didn't have an official IPX rating, they are definitely resistant to water!

They sound good but they need you to get updates from their website ongoing andnthey are finicky. They have a charge problem just about the time the warranty is up. Do not charge using a phone charger or you will blow them out and void your warranty.

My biggest complaint on the x3 was the charging clip. Using metal contacts was problematic - they’d get covered in gunk and sweat and not have a good connection. Wished you’d focused on the charging clip a little. That and battery degradation is the biggest problem. After 2 years of constant use I only get an hour of charge, and can’t replace the battery.

My x2’s have been through the wash no less than 3 times and still work flawlessly

My experience with the X3s was great for the first 6 months...then they completely stopped working, would not turn on. I got a hold of customer service and got a replacement pair in a few weeks. These however only lasted me one run before they too decided to stop turning on ... back to customer service. My third pair, in 8 or 9 months, arrived and worked great again, for about a week. Then it had the same fate as the previous 2 pairs. I contacted customer service once again and was able to negotiate a refund after they offered me a 4th pair, even an upgrade to the Freedom 2 or Run. I was just not interested in another let down. Unfortunately I really had to stay on top of them for this refund. After about a month of back and forth, and waiting, I finally had them WIRE me my refund through MoneyGram. Never had a refund wired to me before, that was a bit odd, but I did get my full refund. I will say, I loved the X3s, when they worked. They sound fantastic and stayed put in my ears comfortably, but after 3 pairs and a really poor customer service experience I am currently looking elsewhere for my next pair of headphones. I really wanted to keep these for the long haul, hopefully the X4s have better luck.

the most annoying thing with my X3's is after a while the silicon earbuds come loose and fall off of the metal speaker thing with the slightest bump. or sometimes when i take them out of my ears the silicon part stays in my ear and I almost couldn't get it out one time. I still love the headphones they sound amazing and i think the design fault is in the silicon part as when i replaced them they stopped falling out for a short while, but I had to get a whole new kit as i only liked one set of the tips. I really hope they fixed this with the X4's

I've never had problems with water nor sweat / perspiration on X3s so waterproof rating makes no difference at all for me... Can't believe they didn't add more enhancements or features... X3s were better than X2s because of customizable sound ( Equalizer when using App )... If you don't own X3 then get X4... If you have X3 that's in good condition don't waste time upgrading to X4...

I just replaced my X3s that I lost. I wish I knew about the X4s!

I was really disappointed with the X3... I found the connection to be finicky, specially with the Pixel 2 XL were the BT connection isn't great either... When using the headphones normally I found that the cable was pulling when I moved my head, using the clips, the control module (where the antennas are I suppose) would be tight against my head causing even more connection problems. Further the notification tones are way too loud and even though they released an update to adjust that, sadly it didn't worked for me (more on that later). The charging is another problem, I had more than once where I'd out the headphones in the clip, the light would go on but the headphones wouldn't charge, also the only way I can get a replacement charger was ordering from jaybird and the shipping to the Netherlands are quite expensive. The mic on my X3 died after 5 months of use, I returned them to the store, they couldn't fix it so I got a gift card to get another one, I went with the X3 again, and the experience was even worse. My first X3 had comply foams, the new ones had another, less comfortable ones. When the app told me there was an update, I did it and the problems got worse, sometimes the headphones wouldn't turn on and I'd need to put them in the charger for it to turn on, and the battery was a mess, I'd get a charge me now warning, and turning the headphones off and on would give me 30% battery and after a while of use they'd shut down and turning it on again I had 70% 😫 Reaching out to jaybird was impossible, they didn't answer in a timely manner, so I just went back to the store and exchange them for a RHA MA650 wireless. Better battery, aptx, better Bluetooth connection and in my opinion more comfortable, even for working out.

I still use the x2’s and I kind of find it hard to think these would be much different in quality to even those. Not a diss on the x4’s, but a compliment on the x2’s

The bluebuds x has 2 little rubber 'keepers' so you can adjust the cable length easily and there is no cable left dangling. Maybe if you don't need to adjust all the time, you can use two pieces of shrink tubing to accomplish the same, or mini tie wraps and cutting the excess. At first I did not understand that charging cradle thing, but I guess it's for waterproofing? Or better battery life..probably both ;) I highly recommend using foam tips or hybrids (decent hybrids, so a silicone outside and foam inside) for great comfort and nice isolation. I am happy Jaybird includes Comply tips standard these days. The reviewer popping them in his ears directly is not recommended: roll (compress) them, put them in your ears, wait a couple of seconds for the foam to expand: voila, a great comfortable fit & seal.

Thank god I still got a new X-fours with 1/3 price! 👍 Sold out in most places (also Tarah Pro). Plus I ordered new set comply foams again. Must have with these one, I skip all silicone heads. Old ones have been with me also about 3 years. One problem on old ones...other side is black out. Fast repair is taped/bent cord just near the controller. Most times I have to turn/push it little some direction after power on. Seems there are some connection failure on cords. Still the best ones for sport and hard work use. (Daily) 🙂

I want to be excited about X4, but my Jaybird Freedom and X3 both stopped working after less than 8months of use. Great sound but won't be spending any more money on Jaybirds

My x2's in the alpha color are still going strong; they look and work as good as day one. So no need to get the x3 or x4. The whole water proof thing is not that important to me not going swimming in them. Water resistance works just fine. Best thing is I got them for a good deal waaayyy back when I got them as well. This specific color was discounted because it was the last one in that color on the self. (which happened to be the color I wanted anyway but it is a strange reason to discount them.) So it was only $90, plus I bought it at Sam's club and sams club had it bundle with a $20 gift card which I used to buy it with. So over all I only played line $70 back then and they are still going strong. Plus I like the way the x2 charge over the new charger. When I cannot find my x2 charger I can use any other charger in its place. Jaybird shot themself in the foot by making these so durable. Not enough reason to upgrade.

Great review. I did notice that I liked the X4 fins better. Lot more comfortable. I would buy the X4 over the X3 over that alone, waterproofing is just a plus.

I had the X2s and now X3s. This is such a small, incremental upgrade that I can't say it's worth it.

So they're the x3's.. but IPX7 waterproof, a different colour and have different wing tips. What an upgrade!!

That new speed tightening Peace is stupid, that's one thing I always sold the X3 vs other headphones is how the 2 plastic peace's fold the cable flush with your head and not give u a stupid pony tail style cable that flaps up and down when u run, I'm not happy about the update

Wing tips look flexible and less pointy, which should make that part more comfortable. Last pair I bought was the X2.

yeah, i agree....memory foam tips are really uncomfortable if worn for long period of time....am waiting for tips to be changed for softer ones & could bear a little bit of weight for extra battery life ,say 10hrs

Sticking w the X3s. Never had a water proof issue with them and that seems to be the main upgrade in the X4s. Also can't see how the new ponytail is an upgrade, I really liked the clip on the X3s but the new feature isn't appealing. Disappointed in the lack of really anything new, but hey now you can get the X3s for $100!

The shape of the 'blue nozzle' was my major issue with the X3's with silicone buds falling off very easily after a month. Looks like they haven't changed it though :(

I have no problem that the x3 aren't waterproof. I accidentally put them in the washing machine and the dryer and they still work perfectly. Maybe I was lucky how knows

IMPORTANT QUESTION: HAS THE BLUETOOTH OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE BEEN IMPROVED?? DOES IT SKIP AS BAD? THIS WAS THE BIGGEST COMPLAINT FOR THE x3 I dont know about other people but id be willing to sacrifice a couple hours from the battery life if it meant fitting a better Bluetooth adapter in there I wish Jaybirds didnt have such problems all around with loose buds and bad bluetooth signal when outside because the sound quality is by far the best of any other options.

I love jaybirds, I own a pair of the x3's. I do have 2 problems with my x3's 1) the proprietary charging dock, someone stole mine and the website is always sold out of the accessory pack. 2) I have long dreads, and when I run and turn my head the connection fades in and out. I'm wondering if Bluetooth 5.0 would fix this problem?

This is waterproof? Hell yes. My X3's broke from my sweat.

Why is everyone talking about the EQ like it some kind of feature. You can do that in Spotify or from your setting or you can download one of thousand apps that do the same.

Do they still have that problem wherein the playback when watching videos on a smartphone is delayed?

How long is the cable? One issue for me is that I think the X3 cable was short, when I'm in a call the microphone goes to my neck, while I'm walking.

Off topic but I got Beoplay E8s over RUNs and use them even more than X3s... Beoplay are significantly more expensive but to me also sound significantly better plus they're truly wireless... Beoplay E8 will not stay in ear as good as X3s... But they simply sound so much better And stay in ear pretty good Fact that Beoplay E8s are completely wireless and are low profile and sound superb is why I paid $399 for them...

If they're waterproof, why did you point your hose away from them?

Got the X3s brand new from Best Buy last week for an early Black Friday price of $59.99 - that’s $70 cheaper than the X4 so it was very hard to justify paying more than twice the price of the X3 just to get IPX7. 😅

Great sound on the X3's so in sure these are just as good if not better. I wish they'd do a better job with the ear buds tho, they dont last long at all

X3s where great ive had them over a year .the only negative is the charging cable after a while it gets finnicky you have to play around with it to get it charging.other than that theyve been great.

The notification voice is very loud in the X3 and there is no way in controlling the volume. There has been many complains on the internet about such issue and Jaybird said there's no fix to it. Is this the same case for the X4 or Jaybird finally listen to the outcries of the users and fix that issue??

Y im having fatigue and pain on my ear.... and it always fall off and discomfort whe the line is behind my back so ended up same wearing it in front

3:11 my favorite way to wear them is over the ear so it feels like they're truly wireless.

can't find a review that talks about microphone/call quality. I find the jaybirds x3 mic leaks too much ambiance, i want to know if this are any better.

Just curious, how do you think the X4's sound compare to the beats x? I got them for free with my iPad, and I think they're acceptable, but I have no idea how they are compared to the competition sound wise.

Terrible proprietary charger, I had my x3s hit the gym 4x a week and they died in a year. never get the white ones if you work out cause they are going to turn tan. my x3 unit broke cause the wires frayed where the dongle connected to the wires.This can be fixed simply by having somewhere to lay them down on a desk to charge but they give you these 2inch charging cables with the x3s. No need to get so complicated with design if it effects performance and that is why I use my Jaybird X's over my now killed X3's WONDERFUL SOUND AND EVERYTHING JUST TERRIBLE CHARGING MECHANISM THAT IS MY ONLY COMPLAINT.

Hi thanks for the nice video. Recently I am looking for a pair of wireless earbuds/earphone to replace my dying Haylou GT1 true wireless earbuds. Jaybird suddenly came across my mind and I saw your video. I wonder, am I better off getting a pair of true wireless earbuds or this Jaybird X4 instead, which both within the same price range of course. I've no problem to pick either type, as long as their build quality is good, wireless connection stable and last long. Need your advice on this. Thanks in advance.

sorry - i never have a sweat issue with my X2s or X3s. No reason to upgrade except if Jaybird pays you to say so.... Same battery, hardware, etc. I'll pass on the blue studs inside. Did they lose the triple wrap cable holder?

Hi Soundguys, Has the charger been upgraded seens the X3's? I always had issues with changing wouldn't start, and eventually i had to throw out a perfectly working headset🤔 I tryed rinsing the connection tips with alcohol (sweat?)

So, I'm better of getting X2 if it stills exists when my X1 breaks or I've lost all my earbuds. Or can you get new earbuds somewhere? The X1's just don't seem to wanna give up on life, wich is good. I've lost one medium sized bud, so I'm using one medium and one small.

I've had my x3s for a year now, and the long part of the cord attached to the mic, is now coming apart and im only getting audio from one side now. I use my headphones for work (sitting at a desk), working out, and my ride to and from work. Pretty pissed about the build quality.

Are they louder than the X3? Because it was really lacking in volume department, so much so I had to return my X3.

Why run to buy the x4s because of waterproofing if your X3s still work? Just use them until they fail & buy the X4s next time.

Did they fix the angle on the tip do the tip won't fall off do easily? Did the change the charging port? I keep losing the stupid thing. And they might as well upgrade to usb c. I really liked the x2. I have the x3 so ill pass.

I dunno, out the box,(after a full charge) my pair could only hold 3.5 hours of play at 40% or 50% volume, had also issues with audio skipping outdoors in a park

How hard can it be for some of these manufacturers to build decent sounding, wireless earbuds that charge via type-c and have the apt x HD Bluetooth codec?

Hey Adam, the Creative Outlier One Plus just came out and seem to not only check every box but also have built in music storage (I hate having to carry my phone while running) at a great price point. Check out their site. I hope you can review them soon as I'm dying to know if they live up to the expectations and competition. Cheers!
