Sorry, let me get this straight. Are all NLS instances put on a parallel drum bus or the drum bus itself or on each individual drum tracks ? I've just not used pro tools a couple of times so I might see it completely wrong ...

They are set up on the drums master channel which in ProTools technically comes before all the signals hit the drum aux. It's still a sum, so the NLS doesn't go on the individual tracks. So everything he puts on his drum aux comes after the NLS.

yes, @andiherzog is correct. all the instances of NLS are on a drum master bus and in some cases even the same trick on the bass master bus. The way his template is organized is: Single drums track into Drum Bus (that contains the NLS) that goes into a Drums ALL bus (a sort of bus made to accomodate revisions) that goes into the mixbus.

Just wanted to point out that I used the Waves Rack because it's the only way I currently have to test this technique with Plugindoctor. I haven't noticed any significant performance differences between using 8 NLS channels and the Waves Rack. While they don't sound exactly alike (they don't no perfectly), the difference is, in my opinion, negligible. Other console emulations or plugins that introduce non-linear saturation can be just as good, if not better, especially if you're willing to compensate for the low-end bump in some cases.

after reading your comment I just tried this with the uad api channel with just a tiny boost of the saturation and it does sound quite good. Only about three instances of the plugin are needed though so not sure if this is doing the exact same thing as the nls would. Next i'll try it with just the Manely and Api Pre Amps. thank you for this video

@@DarkcharmaudioAwesome! Obviously, different console emulations have different inherent boost, phase, and EQ characteristics, so don't expect to get the exact same result with precisely 8 plugins. The key to the trick is to introduce non-linearity and harmonic distortion in a subtle way, but enough to achieve the desired effect. Copying the concept and mindset is essential; copying the plugins themselves is not.
