What do you think the rules for chords and comping should be? 🙂 Joe Pass was right: Play Simple chords and learn how to use them! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P-P-gM7VJx4.html

Just listen to Joe Pass accompanying Ella Fitzgerald or Oscar Peterson - he plays the perfect combination of rhythm, chords, flow and never tries to upstage, just supports and lets them shine, not getting in their way.

I played my first jazz jam recently, where I mostly 'comped' for the soloist using these 2 and 3 note 'shell voicing' chords, and it worked out great. I listened carefully to the drums rhythm, and I got smiles from these experienced players. A great video. Thanks, Jens😊 BTW, Ive had some really good guitarists and teachers recommend your videos 😊

Well done. Less is more. I enjoy playing chords that “imply” the notes not played.

Another excellent lesson . When you’re comping in a tune, do you usually keep the same exact groove throughout the entire tune, or can you vary it a bit ,I.e., add an occasional 8th, or rest , or change the syncopation slightly ? Thank you for your time 🙏
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 месяца назад
It will vary from song to song, but I rarely stick to a groove and mostly just improvise freely. Locking with a specific pattern is more something that will fit some soloists, and I will do that if it feels right to do so.

Great video Jens! But, as I'm working through it, I think there's a mistake in the tab/notation around 10m25s for the second half of the bar on the Eb7.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! Is that where I should have put a parenthesis around the last notes in the bar? I think I did see that in the premiere, but not sure if it was there

@@JensLarsen Sorry - got the time wrong. I meant 7:25, and it's the Eb in the second bar. The tab says xx6558 but your fingers say xx5668

@@JensLarsen if I simply arpeggio these chords from the bass to the soprano voicings what kind of sound will I produce ? I mean the genre,jazz, bebop or etc ? Chords : Fm add(9), Fm6/9, Dbmaj7, F7sus2/D#(without C)
@JensLarsen

@@brokenheartsradio2568 The notes are not enough to define a genre. That is more about melody, rhythm and phrasing. Take the pentatonic scale: It can sound like Blues, heavy metal, folk music but each of those styles sound different ecen thought they mostly use the same scale.

Shell voicings are the only chord voicings I know because I learned them on bass guitar (and I've only got four strings), so it's nice to see how far you can get from shell voicings alone. Also, it pains me when you throw in those walking bass lines because I'm jealous you're a better jazz bassist on guitar than I am on an actual bass, haha--now if you'll excuse me, I should really go do something about that and practice walking over some chord changes...

Not to start a debate or any such thing It's an incredibly lovely feeling to comp a great soloist, and it is of course equally fun to play the solo. But there's a magic vibe in just listening and keeping the rhythmic flow going. And as a fun side note the soloist usually put in one or two "easter eggs" we all can have a laugh at.
