Loved this lesson, it was a good way to change up a solo I think. I'm a girl drummer in my jazz band, and I love watching your videos bc they help me switch up my style!
Maya Jepson Thank you so much! It really means a lot that my videos are helping you. Let me know if there is a topic you want me to cover. All my best!
Thank YOU Tim. Great lessons and always informative. I'm 55 years old and Ive been drumming since I was 8. As a challenge to myself I decided after so many years in matched grip and rock to finally commit to learning traditional grip and jazz stylings and your lessons have been a HUGE help.
You're very welcome! Make sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell, I have some great lessons coming up in the very near future. Thanks for watching!
First time I've seen these 2 videos. Great stuff! I'd love to see soloing not only with what you've already done, but also change the time signatures along the way using paradiddles and double paradiddles as well as 5 stroke, etc.
Great lesson. The rolls aren't a problem for me but I think I'll have to go with a jazz tuning to pull this off. I can't really get the rebound the way they're tuned now.
Killer lesson! I've been messing around with 5 stroke rolls a bunch lately, but have been sticking it RRLLK with the "shorter" phrase. I *think* I stole it from Eric Harland. Glad to see you're back, keep it up!
Hey Tim, great lesson. Glad to have you back. Could you do a lesson on integrating bass drum into jazz coming phrases or just bass drum phrasing in jazz. Keep up the great job.
Your drums are perfectly tuned every single drum sounds exactly like it should in context with the other ones. They usually sound like that from the store but the second I change heads I can never get that sound back did you tune them if so will you do a video on how to do that?
Eu tenho o book mas, pelo tempo que tenho vou seguindo meus estudos na perspectiva das tuas aulas, entendo os padrões (rudimento) e treino aplicabilidade
I’m scouring the interwebs to eradicate every misspelling of the word “DEFINITELY”. The crowd favorite is DEFINITELY DEFIANTLY. I don’t have any concrete data, but I’d guess that more than half the time people are using the word DEFIANTLY as if it were definitely. I worry about our collective literacy level, as DEFIANTLY is not phonetically close, as one look at the word should reveal. There’s no FIN sound, and there’s no NIT sound! How can you be able to read, look at this word, and say “looks right to me!” lol. It DOESNT look right at all, and of course it’s not. Between this, and VIOLA instead of VOILA, it’s enough to drive you batty. Don’t forget - “Tis better to be thought a fool, than to post on the web and remove all doubt”
Awesome, welcome back! I've been wondering about playing swing on the high-hat. How do you go about setting up your high-hat, and what is the technique you are using? :)
I was thinking about when you keep the ride swing pattern on the high-hat with your stick, either only using hands and choking or controlling the height with the foot!
New video is up and I think you'll like it... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TxUrYJIuGeY.html I hope I didn't butcher your name too bad.
Enjoyed the video. One clarification, the condensed five-stroke is over triplet feel? I'm thrown off by your 3/2 note. So the accent is on the "a" of the triplet with double strokes on the down-beat and "&"?
Glad to be back! Thanks so much! Actually, I've completely left it alone. I had no idea how much I'd be using it and can't afford the downtime to restore it. Plus, it's kind of nice to not care at all about the finish.
The best joke of the century: Let's see, if it sounds like faster.Around 7.02 Since Einstein we all know, that speed faster than the light is not possible in this universe. This is, why we can only hear him but we don't see the sticks moving.😂
It's there, if you're using phone speakers, you'll never hear it, but if you are on headphones, it is there quietly, just as I intended it. Hope this helps!
Good shit. I was wondering your ride hand playing on the slower tempos. U seemed to play the last triplet before the 1st and 3rd quarters a bit late. Do u prefer this over playing the triplet "on point" at slower tempos and if so then why? Would like to hear your opinion and hopefully u understand my rally english.
Thanks! You are correct. I am coming out of the Art Blakey and Jimmy Cobb school of ride cymbal playing. I think it all depends on context. If I'm playing in an Elvin sort of way, it will feel entirely different.
