Free jazz is far more complex than people like to admit. “Oh it sounds like a 5th grade band warming up!” No it does not. No 5th grader or beginner horn player, or drummer, or anything could play the powerful screeches of Pharoah Sanders, the insane polyrhythmic and frantic drumming of Rashied Ali, or any other free jazz player. The understanding of your instrument has to be so deep to make music like this.

the notion doesn't come from a judgement about technical skills of the players. it comes from the randomness, the impression the musicians not playing together but against each other. while i have respect for the skills, this music gives me absolute nothing to enjoy. it's hard to follow, hard to grab the beat and is rather complex for the sake of complexness. if there is a bigger picture behind all this "mess" it will be hard to agree on how it looks like, how it feels like. "free" is the perfect word for the music, but that doesn't mean it has to be incredible special, more difficult or supreme. it's just another "style" in music, and this style is "none". I enjoy Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica", but Free Jazz musicians rather ask for a musical degree to understand their language.

this ain't free jazz! "FREE" jazz is what the word means: ABANDON STRUCTURE ETC! it is NOT jazz musicians playing regular jazz but in different keys and tempos! FREE jazz sounds like a tornado and is AWESOME!! Maybe I gotta look up Charles Gayle or Borbetomagus!

what do you mean by Free form jazz? I think that's different from FREE JAZZ (which is the musicians just going nuts and unconcerned with rules). LIVE in person, FREE JAZZ is far more powerful than on record, cuz of the chaos and different sound sources!

I used to go down to Ronnie Scotts in London in the 60s to hear people like Ornette Coleman and Roland Kirk. The audience would be overwhelmingly white and would exit the club stroking their beards and murmuring "Hmm, interesting man!"
