Bireli has astounded even the casual fan with his incredible speed on single note leads. His accuracy and phrasing personify his taste. But equally is his movement “without the ball”. His rhythm play backing the other musicians is selfless. Beautiful.
Complete mastery of an instrument. Almost 40 years since I first heard Bireli, when he appeared on 'Yorkshire Television', and I have been enthralled by his unnatural ability ever since. I used to be good friends with Gary Karr (before he retired, since the mid 70s when I began playing double bass as a child and tutors had a similar response to my abilities on that bloody thing) and I don't dole out a phrase like that without serious consideration.
Greg Howe is a great guitarist, but with an acoustic guitar i don't think he can play like Bireli...Bireli is my fave by far, for the swing, his incredible talent for improvisation, his knowledge of jazz language 😉
He/she couldnt handle the bass lol. "Bass too heavy" Thats probably what you write when you cant critizise the musicians because they are the best in the world. Get a nice sound system and free your heart open too a variety of differently mixed/mastered recordings like this
