"Well, we both lived in New York, in the same building, on 5th Avenue. He lived above me, a few floors above me and he was in the elevator one day and I met him and he kind of scared me because he was a little scary, he was a lot scary actually. He was very imposing even though he was a small guy, but he was very intense and as we started painting together, the relationship got even more intense."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jo Gelbard, former lover and artistic collaborator:
"At that point, he was mostly sketching and these are the sketches that ranged from before when I even met him through to when he died and the canvases also are a reflection of all the years that I was with him, starting with ones that are, for me, painted with a lot of paint, going through to his last painting, which is depressing but I think more like his sketches and more like his music and so my job, painting with him, I feel, was to get him to translate the way he sketched into paint and put it on canvas."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Jo Gelbard, former lover and artistic collaborator:
"Yes, that was done two weeks before he went into a coma and actually when I was drawing it, he was kind of out of it, he was really sick, you can imagine, at that point. And as I was painting it with him, I was looking at it and thinking to myself 'This is so depressing. I can't believe we're both painting this painting. This has got to be the last painting by virtue of what it looks like'. "

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Jo Gelbard, former lover and artistic collaborator:
"Well, I have one funny story: we were painting together and Miles was very dark and we were painting and we painted on the floor and we rolled out our canvases and he said to me, 'Give me the flesh colour' - because that's how he spoke - and I thought 'I don't really want to argue about this but I don't really know what he means by "flesh colour". His flesh or my flesh?' So I said, 'Who's flesh colour?' And he stared at me and he said, 'give me the pink'. "

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Jo Gelbard, former lover and artistic collaborator:
"I'm ready to say goodbye to the work. I mean, I can't live with all this art in my apartment, it's hoarding it and art is meant to be free, like his music, and float around. And I think people will cherish this art, I hope they do."

JAZZ LEGEND'S ART GOES ON SHOW
A previously unseen collection of drawings and acrylic oil paintings by the late Miles Davis, a man considered by many to be the world's greatest jazz musician, goes on show for the first time in the UK.
The exhibition is hosted by Balmain Fine Art, who acquired this private collection from Jo Gelbard, his girlfriend and artistic collaborator during the last five years of his life.
The collection comprises of around 100 original drawings and five large acrylic oil paintings illustrating Miles' interpretation of form, colour and movement and in particular his well-documented fascination with and love of women.
