In this video, I demonstrate the 3 levels to practicing 'All The Things You Are' (Jerome Kern). I break down all of the scales and chords for you in a simple way that can be understood by anyone who has a basic working knowledge of major scales. I discuss the key centers, root movement, and voice leading through the changes. In all, I demonstrate three ways to practice the song that get progressively more complex, and at the end I played three choruses of improv solo - the full transcription is available at my website. I hope you enjoy!
Please suggest other songs you would like me to analyze on this channel in the comments - it keeps me motivated.
I mentioned the 'voice leading' video so here's the link to that: • Jazz Lesson: How To Us...

I bought the Killer Vibes Book a few days ago. Wonderful. Over 200 pages of brilliant instruction and clear well defined levels of play. You have worked diligently for years perfecting your technique and understandings of music. You nailed the method of starting simply and adding layers of harmonic depth and melodic invention.. I can't thank you enough for the monumental contribution you have made to my life.

You are a great player, I wish we was in the same neck of the woods. I I am a jazz pianist I grew up as a child listening to Cal tjader on one hand and Charlie Parker on the other playing all the standards, I love bebop and swing. Bird and those cats left us a music that if played right it comes to life.. I like the sound of those vibes, you put a lot of love in what you play... Oh by the way, you are a great teacher.

Hey Tim! I really enjoy your videos. I was wondering if you've considered doing a video about soloing over ballads. I'm playing Sophisticated Lady on a recital coming up and improvising over that tune is proving to be pretty tricky. Thanks man. Keep making awesome content!
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 6 лет назад
ah yes - another great topic idea. I will definitely put that on the list! As a starting point, make sure you can really play the melody, and then improvise around it..on Sophisticated Lady specifically, I don't try to do too much on those descending dominant chords. Leaving space and playing slow rhythms is perfectly OK on ballads!

And funny thing, I almost skipped this lesson all together. There are a lot of options to choose from when skimming thru all the thumbnail images for videos on this song. So I said to myself...."Why should I bother watching this? The guy is wearing a sweat jacket....what kind of a jazz musician is going to make a god video wearing that?" Should never judge! So I was wrong, and I am so glad I made my way hear. You are helping me understand the basics of music theory and I never got it until today, now I am beginning to grasp the big picture and now I don't feel so lonely when I pick up my guitar.

This is actually one of my favorite Coltrane tunes - one tip is that I tend to ignore the V chord in all of the ii-V progressions and just improvise over the 'ii' instead. It's a lot less thinking. Definitely a good vid topic though, I'll put it on the list :)

Hi Tim, great video. I was wondering how you identified the key centres and where they stop and start. Thanks!
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 5 лет назад
Hi Benjamin, it's the dominant 7th chords in this song that give it away (not in every song though). Dominant 7th chords are the 5 chord, and from there we can figure out what the 1 chord is, and also backtrack to identify the 6-3-2-5 before the 1.
@champagne213
@champagne213 4 года назад
Hey Tim, just starting out as a jazz vibes player (played drumset for years) and loving your videos. I'm starting on lv1. Do you have a video explaining how you figure out the key centers for each area of the tune. It's not always obvious sometimes, especially when it's seemingly changing every bar. Thanks
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 4 года назад
That’s a great question- the giveaway is to find the Dominant 7th chord resolving to a major (or minor) chord.. that’s your “1”.

Hey Tim, i really enjoy your videos, great work! i know this is a bit more advantage, but i would love to see you do the tune bebop by dizzy, concerning the issues of playing a fast tune which changes in it's A Section only between f minor and C7. That would be a tremendous source of inspiration, as always! Greets, Harald
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 6 лет назад
I learned a great tip from a Barry Harris workshop years ago specifically for this tune - but I still find it difficult. Remember that the C7 isn't all that important - you can just improvise on F minor. Conversely, if the tune only had F minor, you could put the C7 in whenever you want and it will still sound good. The C7 is there to give some harmonic direction to the line, but it's still basically just F minor.

Tim Collins I'm new to Jazz and it's the first song I'm doing a chord analysis on after watching some youtube videos. Deep Purple is in F. Was just working on it. Here's the sweet progression. F F#/D7 (secondary dominant) Gm C7 F Cm (borrowed chord from parallel minor key) D7 Gm B flat minor(another borrowed chord from key of Fm) Am D7 Gm C7 Cadence F F#/D7 Gm C7 I'm not sure about the secondary dominant chord name, might be F#dim instead of F#/D7? Are they essentially the same? I'm 50 years old, hope it's not too late to learn this lol.
