Note that this is also her own arrangement (at the beginning of the video you'll see her give the director more notes). Your word for Angelina was "unprecedented," which is completely accurate: at 9 years of age, she understood jazz in a way that few musicians ever will (and NO ONE under the age of 20 ever has). Ignore her age and simply enjoy her as the top tier professional jazz musician that she is. As a fellow musician (sax & clarinet), I too wish I had a fraction of this child's talent!

"Welcome to the wonderful world of Angelina Jordan!" What a great addition you are to her expanding family around the world! When you play this back for yourself it will seem like you are talking about a veteran artist who has been singing for years and has perfected her style. Wrong! She's 9 and she had a lot of influence on this arrangement. I know you will probably go next to her performances on Norway's Got Talent and then I CANNOT WAIT till you listen to her sing 'What A Difference A Day Makes' at 8 years old singing at an outdoor event in front of thousands in the audience. Somewhere Dinah Washington's spirit smiles whenever she hears Angelina singing this great classic. So much more but I'll save it. Btw, this was the best breakdown of this video I have heard by anyone and let me tell you, a lot of very knowledgeable people have reacted to her performance.

I love it when somebody with so much knowledge about jazz hears Angelina perform. It is very unusual for a young girl like her now a days to be interested in jazz, especially at this age. I have heard everything she has done, and nobody tells her, this is how you do it, she does all of this on her own. Including the arrangements. Her grandmom played jazz in the house when she was growing up. And with her unbelievable natural talent, this is what we are blessed with. Continue your journey, it is a rabbit hole for sure!!

Finally!!!! Someone who does really understand talent. Finally someone that said the truth. At 9 years of age here Angelina is already at the level of great artists we have today or even better. Dimash 29 years or whatever his age is, Angelina at 9 is up there, 20 years ahead. Thank you for being honest, and not holding back to say that. Because of obvious reasons. Plus Dimash uses a lot of artificial help, but lets not get into that. This is completely raw talent here. I'm a sub surely for that. Angelina is the real next great, lets just hope the industry doesn't ruin her. Peace and love God Bless

What do you mean Dimash uses artificial help? I hope you're not suggesting that he isn't one of the most technically sound vocal masterminds the world has ever seen? 😜
@TroyArchAngel
@TroyArchAngel 4 месяца назад
@@AaronHillyer It's fake. You have no idea. To just say that, you clearly don't know. I am suggesting that 50% of his skill relies on artificial help. I'm 100% sure someone that is somewhat knowledgeable about vocals knows. Or should I say you know, but deny it. I heard Dimash once, and I'm honest not like you it's robotic vocals and pitch correction galore. I couldn't listen to half the song. Wake up from a dream if you think he is the greatest LOL. I'm used to listen to real talent and raw vocals only, so fake vocals I distinguish immediately. Or are you being sarcastic... Because to me it's so obvious, that you have to be brainwashed or dreaming to never think that it's fake. I mean he has talent obviously, but the amazing notes are all fake. Live pitch corrected in real time and obviously even releases. But hey you may say what you like after all, it's just your opinion.
@TroyArchAngel
@TroyArchAngel 4 месяца назад
@@AaronHillyer So you say that then silence.... Tell me have you ever thought of that? Pavarotti in his late career was the closest to ever be to pitch perfect. No one that is human can be on perfect pitch sustained for long time. The human voice is not capable. And you are saying That Dimash has better pitch than Pavarotti while he jumps and moves around on stage. Wake up.... It's all fake it's a software. I'm guessing for you to leave a comment like that with an emoji at the end and doesn't reply back. You are fake too, for accepting fake singers and glorifying them as the best the world has seen . Be real, listen to more Angelina and you will get the taste of the real human voice and what the human voice is what really is capable of. Not Ai software. Pff you fake trolls make me sick

Greatly enjoyed your reaction and analysis. I learned of Angelina 4 years ago. Her music and who she is as a person, has turned me into a superfan at age 65. I am inspired to introduce Angelina to as many people as I can and to learn more about her unique talents. Please take the time to read the biography I compiled for her. RU-vid wouldn't allow me to post the full biography. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RU-vid. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. *Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. The spoken language is Norwegian: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-80f3t3dmBbk.html

Angelina says this is about love. She referred to it as " desparate love." She is an emotional empath. She also says at 1 and a half "l started with jazz." At this point she had already performed "Fly Me to the Moon" after Sinatra on American TV (The View). Angelina is very conscious of the history and background of songs and arrangements.

It is not uncommon in Norwegian, especially for children, to say yes or no on inhale. As an old male I can't get even close to that high pitch though, nor the maintained and fairly stable pitch. I don't know how hard it is to do for people that didn't do it as children, but I would guess most adult Norwegians are at least to some degree able to vocalize short words on inhale.

When she played with Gregg Field (who played drums for Sinatra, Basie, Ella, etc.), a few years back he raved about how great her storytelling is, like Sinatra's was. You believe what she says! As Sinatra once said, she never lets her singing get in the way of her storytelling.

I have viewed thousands of reactions over the past several years, reflecting my great interest in music and especially aspiring artists. I can say without reservation that this is one of the finest reactions I have ever seen! Your insight and knowledge of the music, and your interest in the artist background, are almost second to none. I know your channel will do very well and I'm here for it! Norwegian born Angelina Jordan began singing at the age of one and a half, and by age three was listening to jazz and classics legends on repeat. Her grandmother was her greatest influence, but Angelina chose her own path. Her first studio performance was at age 7, singing I Who Have Nothing. She won Norway's Got Talent at the age of only 8, singing old time classics from Billie Holliday and George Gershwin, and became one of the youngest ever vocalists to win an international Got Talent Show! Her performance at 9 years old of Screamin Jay Hawkins, I Put a Spell on You is considered one of the finest recordings ever of a 9-year-old vocalist! Angelina also went viral on America's Got Talent the champions in 2020 with her unique versions of Bohemian Rhapsody and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Angelina sings in English which unbelievably is her third language! She is a true prodigy. She is now 18, and has recorded a huge library of songs, including covers and several originals. A major attraction to Angelina's music is the emotion and attitude she conveys, although she has not experienced the life events! She is known as the barefoot princess of 1,000 voices as she can adjust her tone, style, and register for any song or genre. She was signed by Republic Records when she was 14. She was not widely promoted for a few years, as her family wanted to allow her a normal childhood. However, things are changing rapidly as she has now graduated school. She has released two original music video singles from Republic Records, Love Don't Let Me Go, and Now I'm the Fool, coinciding with her new six song EP called Old Enough. The four other songs have been released as visualizers. A world tour is in the works, likely to coincide with her full album release. Here is a semi-chronological RU-vid playlist for Angelina of over 200 songs, beginning with 16 performances including originals, her EP, and a few specialty songs. Then it starts chronologically beginning with Gloomy Sunday from Norway's Got Talent. ru-vid.com/group/PL2v8kgVeo4EbQD6l_WAVjOfItquzW7oEc&si=HrEm55lV164yKJqu Why does Angelina sing barefoot? The answer may bring a tear to your eye. It is related to a promise she made to herself and to the world when she was only 6 years old. She was traveling in the Middle East with her mom and grandmother and they came across a young orphan girl with no shoes and scarred feet. Angelina gave the girl her own favorite shoes. Angelina ask the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and she said a doctor, but she could not because she had to take care of her siblings. She asked Angelina the same question and Angelina said I want to sing for the world. The young girl said she would pray for Angelina. Since then, Angelia has forever performed barefoot as a reminder of all those less fortunate. At age 9 she wrote a book about this experience, Between two Hearts, becoming the youngest ever published author in Norway. She also has helped raise millions for children's charities. She even stated at 8 years old that she would be donating her winnings from Norway's Got Talent to charities. She is a special individual, and one you cannot follow without developing an emotional bond. Angelina captures hearts because she is humble and has compassion for humanity. Her stated goal from childhood was to sing for the world and spread love and peace. I trust this will cause you to embrace her as millions of others have, and that you will continue down the rabbit hole from which you will not want to escape. Peace and love.

AJ is empathic to an unbelieveably high degree. I think that's the key to her level of emotional expression at such an early age. She can glean the emotions from another's vocal performance and internalize them, whether she has experienced them or not. Then she adds them to her own vocal performances. So she can easily sing believably about obsessive love, using her idea of it without actually having experienced it romantically. About the barefoot thing, she actually wrote a book about the experience that caused her to make that pledge, and became the youngest published author in Norway among her many other incredible accomplishments.

I really enjoyed your reaction. As a fellow jazz musician, I'm fascinated at watching a true child prodigy at work in the genre. Angelina grew up listening to the greats and internalized so much. There is a bts video of this same session showing her working with these musicians. Yes she is a little pro. When she was interviewed around this time, she said this song was about desparation for love; this shows she had a sophisticated emotional worldview at such a young age. We have been given so much video of the growth and development of this artist and had my eyes opened to the art of music at my age of 73 by this young woman. AJ in many videos has shown a fantastic abilty with runs an melismas, fry and vibrato but it always in service of the song, not to demonstrate vocal gymnastics for it own sake. I think she is primarily a storyteller and as her original songs attest a brilliant lyricist. But in some videos that you will see, she can really let it rip as well. She is known as the girl with a thousand voices At 18 years old, we've only heard just a few of them.❤

In an interview Angelina said later (then 10yo) about this song: "It means love! Desperate love. It's very special, it's almost voodoo! The original is very nice, and when I scream it is a desperate cry that everyone should love each other."

This is one of the best in my top five reactions of Angelina. It didn't make any difference how many times you stopped in this reaction because everything you had to say was in depth and directly to what her real talent is. There is a lot that we long time fans of Angelina expect from reactors. First of all we expect them to listen to her thoroughly. We expect them not to pigeonhole her even as to what her influences are because there are not just one, or two, who may seem obvious when you listen to her She has a multitude of influences that she has gleaned from as a young child, but now all of those influences contribute to her unique style, and artistry. But this is a beautiful, and complete reaction to this particular rendition of hers of this song. And believe me she knows what she's singing about because it is an innate sensibility that she has always had, even as a young child. It is phenomenal isn't it? She is absolutely a textbook phenom, and prodigy in music. Thank you for doing a reaction the absolute right way, and showing your in-depth understanding of music especially from the jazz standpoint.

This is literally the thoughts going through my head on my first reaction when I fell out of my chair (Dimash - Sinful Reaction) when I realized omg...I can enjoy this and provide so much value to people at the same time. It's an absolute honor and privilege to be on this side of the equation and I don't take it for granted. A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the pianist, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. In the band, she was called a boss.

After seeing her live three times, she is much better live than the videos show. She is not a new commodity but because her parents insisted on AJ completing her education, she is not as well known by the general public. Her cover of Summertime during the final of NGT is epic. Opening for Norah Jones at age 11, Quincy Jones at 12, in a TV show at about 10, singing for a movie, performing around the world for many world leaders, performing for the Nobel peace prizes twice are just some of her amazing accomplishments. You have gone down a rabbit hole that is amazing.

Love your reactions- so much fun to hear from a jazz musician your appreciation of what she’s doing at that age! And great to hear you appreciating her techniques which are WAAAAY above the normal amount of years it would normally take to develop them!! Please take the time to listen to, if not react to, her renditions of “ What a Difference a Day Makes” and “ Summertime” , both done at age 8 in the “ Norway’s got talent“ competition. Would love to hear your reaction as a jazz musician! And at a little older age (I think it was 11) she did “I have nothing“ by Whitney Houston. And there are so many, but those are some of her younger ones that were just amazing for a child. She does not sing with a child’s voice, as you’ve heard! I have to mention two more not to be missed: “Stay”, a Rihanna song, and “ A Million Years Ago” , an Adele song. Both were Done in her personal studio with only one guitarist - simply fantastic.

Hi, Aron... great reaction..!! This high-pitched scream that she makes at the beginning (also called whistle-voice) is a scream made through inspired breathing (that is, the reverse of a normal vocalization that we make while exhaling). Another thing to note is that when she sings "I love you, I love you, I love you" (and in the scream that precedes it) she uses the kind of growling voice not only of Sreamin' Jay Hawkins, but especially of Louis Armstrong, one of her biggest musical influences (note that, at her auditions on Norway's Got Talent, her fans are holding signs with a photo of Louis Armstrong and the words "Angelina Born to Sing"). She even sang a version of "Whar a Wonderful World" when she was 8 years old.
@A-AronReacts

I'll definitely have to listen to it. Being a trumpet player, I ALWAYS want to hear Louis in people and as such I'm biased there so I tend to not leverage that reference unless it sounds directly like him. Thanks!

I believe strongly Angelina used this 1956 Screamin Jay Hawkins arrangement version as a basis to reconstruct the version she ended up with, minus his theatrics. And slowed it down. This has the sax solo, same place, and the vocal 'woooh's near the end. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-orNpH6iyokI.html His face matches the candle Angelina is holding at the start of her video.

Great reaction! Yes, you are picking up on the things that make young Angelina so amazing and special. At around this age, she was really heavily influenced by old style Jazz and Billie Holiday being a huge influence on her back then. The legendary names you mentioned in this video are some of her early influences too. You are also correct about her being involved with the arrangements of the songs she does. That piece of paper that she hands over to the gentleman at the beginning of this video? Those were her notes of what she wanted from the musicians and the music. She's crazy good here at 9, but as she has gotten older, her power and control is even better and she's only 18. This young lady is one of the best singers I have ever heard!

I have watched so many reactions to this video its almost an obsession. Its refreshing to finally see a reaction from someone who is a pro with the genre and actually knows the history behind the song. But... scatting? The song is homage to Scream'n Jay Hawkins as she held up his image in the beginning of the video (the candle). I don't think Scream'n Jay'd be scat'n. I'd think that'd be too far off course.
