Tritone substitutions are probably THE most widely used chord substitution in jazz. In the seventh part of this jazz piano course, we will explain what it is, when to use and not to use it, why it works, and finally we'll look at an example showing how it can be used in practice, including explicit voicings.

I really liked the last voicing son Cm6/9 (11) also with B in the base, as well as the transposition Bbm6/9(11)/G.. I’d love more of these fabulous voicings and use them Thanks a lot.

Mangold, minor chords can also have their Tritons subs, except for minor chords, the two only share one note because the third of the original minor chord is flattened (Gm Tritons is still Db but no longer share the note B)

Dear my teacher...I'm one of your subscriber learning many musical theories from your awesome videos. By the way at 16:32, the chord you playing sounds like a 'blackadder chord' Gaug/A or something I think. Would you mind if you are interested in it, make a video for it? Every single video you uploaded are very precious and I'm looking forward your next video. Thank you for today's lesson:)

Mangold: I wonder if it’s acceptable to play the substituted chord on the left hand, while maintain the original on the right doing melody line? I tried (Db on left, G on right, seems alright, has an Eastern European classical feel).

Mr Mangold: (Off topic) . I notice that in many of your videos you are playing a Roland 700NX. I also saw your less than positive review of the Roland RD2000 . I also have the Roland 700NX. I have actually played it so much that there are pits in the keys where my fingers rub. I love the "Concert Grand" sound. Other sounds are pretty good - about 80% but the Concert Grand scores 100% for me. DO you feel the same? I have tried other pianos and even had the RD200 in my studio for a week or two. I found its action inferior. In short, I have never found anything better than the RD 700NX, for piano - superb action and superb sound. I am beginning to think it is impssible to improve upon? Would be interested in your views

My piano used to be a Roland RD700GX, not NX. I prefer either the Kawai MP11 or the Nord Piano (or Stage) over any Roland at this point.
@Notmehimorthem
@Notmehimorthem 4 года назад
MangoldProject thanks for the reply. Here are my further thoughts, which I think you might find interesting. I have also had the Nord stage (2). I found the action inferior to the Roland 700NX by a considerable way. We both agree I think about the Roland RD 2000. I found the action to be good, but also inferior to the 700NX, which has the best action I have ever played. The Concert Grand sound of the 700nx has a responsive expressiveness I have never found on any sample based technology. I think this is to do with the fact it is not layered, rather the sound is created from scratch. Also sample based keys unavoidably capture some reverb when the original sounds are recorded. When you use the sound there is a second reverb and possibly a third reverb if you apply an fx. This can muddy things and confuse the ear. These are small differences but over time they are felt in the expressiveness of the board. Perhaps you know also that for each note there are a number of different samples used to capture the actual dynamic oscillations of the way the real piano sounds at different volumes. This is because it’s not just a matter of increasing the amplitude of a wave, the wood and the metals of real pianos react in very different ways according to the way the key is struck. Here is a breakdown. Let’s say that for each note of a sampled piano their may be five layers. As midi has 128 different velocity values, the first ppp sound might be used for all the velocity sounds between say the range 1-20 velocity. The same sample is used and it is simply amplified. This is not how a piano responds it is an inferior emulation. As the note reaches the top of the velocity range it is merged with the second sample. This is done to avoid a sudden audible switch from one sound to the next between velocity 20 and 21. So, effectively, at some velocity values, two piano samples are being heard. Also undesirable. The Roland 700nx uses the Supernatural technology to create its sound from scratch. There is no layering involved. There are many other technologies that create the sound from scratch synthetically TruePianos comes to mind. IMO Roland got it very right with this particular sound. It responds like a true grand piano. I have never found its equal, though it is also available on the 2000 NX, deep inside its menus. The 2000 also has the Supernatural tech. The PHA 3 keyboard of the RD700NX complements this sound with a superb touch, in my subjective opinion, the best I have played. I can’t actually see how its action could be improved upon, it’s firm, it feels like a Steinway. My finger muscles had to develop to access its full dynamic, but this lead me to a new expressiveness. The 2000 has the PHA 50 key bed, this IMO is more like the Nord, lighter, and more synthetic. The 2000 has much better non piano sounds but the default pianos are pretty poor - being sample based. The build is poorer too. The 2000 has better controls and eight faders, much better for Hammond. This has been much longer than I intended to write, but rather than delete, I thought I would share. If you get a chance, I would recommend you play the Roland 700NX, it’s a truly great piano keyboard, now available at great prices. I have no knowlege of Kawaii.. Finally, did you know that MIDI 2 is now out and developers are creating new keyboards for it? There are lots of benefits including instant set up of hardware in daws and tow way communication, but the feature I find interesting is that no longer will velocities be restricted to 128 values, not it will be millions. I hope you found this interesting
