A great Freddie Hubbard tune, and a requisite for all those who want to improve their improvisation skills. My esteemed colleague www.youtube/user/itsTheMystery... has covered this very nicely on EWI and has correctly noted that although the song may be simple does not mean that the improvisation is necessarily easy. With a total of only 3 different chords, the key for me is to keep the solo interesting.
The "A" sections are all in D dorian and the "B" section goes from Eb Major7 to D Major7. The key points to improvisation for me are tension, release, dynamics, repetition and variance. Mix and match all of these into meaningful phrasing, rinse and repeat. ;-)
I have added annotations to try and explain some of the techniques I use.
MIDIKeyz graphical keyboard courtesy of www.midikeyz.com
Tech notes:
Roland FP-4 digital piano.
Backing track from the Aebersold collection Freddie Hubbard Volume 60.
Tempo 128 BPM.
Recorded and Mixed in Reaper.
Mastered in Adobe Audition.
Video composite in Adobe Premiere Elements.
Annotations done using Camtasia
Final Video output in Serif MoviePlus X3
Thanks for listening.

Wow, Your dynamic phrasing in this is 10/10! I like all the space you leave -- it gives it an ultra-laid back presentation that really pulled me in. Your backing track sounds like the real thing.

Love the tutorials, especially when you describe what you're doing on top. I have referred this to the piano player in my H.S. Jazz Ensemble.

You do a great job of making it sound good! How do you make it so smooth? When I play it, it sounds very rough. But I will work on it. Thank you so much for all of your videos!

So many fourth interval chords!!!! Mind blown!! They act like sus4 chords in second inversion, so the root is in the middle. At 4:17 for the chords, he uses the relative minor as the root, playing Csus4 for Eb, and then Bsus4 for D major. Lots of modal stuff you can do!!!

Yes, solo is interesting - but you continue to evoke the spirit of McCoy Tyner ;-) In terms of improvisation, where would a sax player start ?
