"Hello Kent. I have 20 books on jazz. Reading some of them is like studying quantum mechanics! So there’s only one that I keep going back to and it’s yours. Pure clarity. It’s a work of genius. Best investment in my jazz training I ever made! "

"What do you call a retired cowboy? de-ranged!" Here in Old England we call that a "Corny" joke. ie: worn out and tiresome but in a good way. The more corny the better. Good lesson for me. understanding different scales is my weakest point. You'll never win the talk more talk less argument. These lessons are well balanced I reckon.

Mr. Hewitt! I just popped in to say hi to the grooviest guy who showed me piano was possible!! I've been on a classical kick lately on the keys and I'm not fighting it. When I'm not practicing classical I'm coming back to your "over the rainbow reharmonization". Man O man! That 2-5-1 approach used in the the Eflat major - Cmin - Gmin replacing the Cminor with the A7b5 to D7 progression was making light bulbs go off every which way. Realizing the A7b5 was the 2 of the Gminor and thus the 7 of the Bb major scale was like ZING! And I know there's so much more to uncover. using any chord as the 1 and then finding the 5 of that and the 5 of that. Wow! How cool!? I'm still a complete beginner and so that video is way over my (head)fingers at the moment but it's such a great lesson to grow into. I miss the old format with the upright, but it's so so great to see and hear you. Lots of love!

Hey bud, I enjoy all your teachings. I like how you breakdown and analyze the different approaches you can take in soloing on this tune. Who are some of your favorite piano players and what aspects of their playing do you enjoy the most? Sometimes Antonio Jobim is better listening music than Snarky Puppy. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to the art as well as your teachings.

That was great. What a cool tune. I used to play that song back in the 70s but I wasn’t really a jazz pianist so I faked it using thirds against a root bass. I had forgotten that the song ever existed until checking out your video. Thanks for showing how the song should be or at least a convincing way that it could be played. More great stuff!

Great comment, Jack. Same here, played it back in the 70's , but now figured out a different way to play it. After not thinking of it for a long time, it dawned on me- hey, what a nice easy tune to practice modal playing.

Hey Kent.. the sound varies bit too much to my ears.. especially this one. What if you send it to me next time before you send it to the air... in the raw form, and I even it out and clean some noises if any and will see if you like it or not. I can imagine that it might bit overkill for you.. anyway.. if you would like to try it out, let me know I'll be happy to help you with the sound if you want. Thanks for another fruitful video.
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 3 года назад
Thanks, for the offer Jan. Are you referring to the spoken part of the video? It could be because I used external mics and I had a noisy fan on my laptop. Also I'm using a more complicated setup with OBS and multiple screens. I'm having the laptop fixed, so that won't be an issue. However getting the external mics just right is a bit of a challenge. For the playing part, getting the balance between the keyboard and the backing track is another challenge. Write to my email so I'll have yours.
@emblemcc
@emblemcc 3 года назад
@@KentHewittpiano88 yes, the spoken word is bit too distant and is clipping. I felt you had some noise you wanted to clean up but end up with washed up recording. Plus the overall loudness is not on right level. We need to rise up the volume quite a bit to hear what your are saying. I know it is a detail, we can still understand and all, but if the sound will be better people would like the video more. It might be that the sound was broken in a level that it was hard to fix or unfixable.. I still feel it could be better though.. sure.. I know it is not easy to run this crazy setup and have the energy to polish all pieces alone, that is why I offer my help, if I can help at all. I'll write you an email.
