Singaporeans can expect more inflation, as nearly 80% of our food comes from Malaysia. With the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) appreciating by about 7%, this will likely lead to further inflation here. Currently, the Ringgit is trading at RM3.25 per Singapore Dollar (SGD), according to CIMB SG exchange rates

omg, the person who wrote that message on borderline singaporeans is one super myopic person or simply uneducated (it doesnt mean that if one goes to school then he is educated). I know of many people who are high income earners and have built a big nest egg who are also keen on moving to JB for the wider space, lesser crowds, better food etc etc and not just for the better value that they get for their money. I just wonder why this person with such thoughts even want to join your telegram group in the first place ????

Let's all not be so defensive, unless the stir is for click bates. "Concrete efforts comfortably retirement" could also mean to plan intentionally, undeniably, and find justified level to retire comfortably. Her mother's view is also not wrong. There is no need to chase for big house, eat cheap and take advantage on others at this age... but if want to, then ok, go find a right place regardless being a borderline, poor, smart, top line, lucky or unlucky. Actually, I think the reverse is true, i. e. only well to do Singaporeans could have a retirement home in JB or Malaysia, if they have MM2H which is quite costly to get. Without a valid long term visa to stay in Malaysia, non Malaysians cannot retire there, other than treat it as an extra holiday home. In other words, these people still need to have a home to stay in Singapore most of the time.
@lilaclaicc

But the truth here is those who have difficulty to retire in Singapore would unlikely be able to qualify for the MM2H retirement scheme. It is the more well to do that would qualify for the MM2H scheme. Unless you are advocating the use of the 30-day social pass to retire in JB “illegally” or else it is not do-able for Singaporeans to rent out their only HDB flats home in Sg and rent a cheaper flat in JB to retire.

I agree with what you shared. Rather than him simply saying 'wanting to help' fellow Singaporeans to find a lower cost of living by retiring in JB. Perhaps he can offer by making videos on actually 'how to help' getting a valid pass (and not the expensive MM2H or set up a company to entitle as an owner pass). Retiring with a 30 day social pass is not as simple, no one has claim to be able to do so. Even if one is able to work around with the 30 day social visit pass, we still need a place to come back to in Singapore to lie low for a few months before returning to JB to 'retire'. So, any help with offering on how to officially 'retire' in JB without paying an arm and leg for an MM2H or via the owning a business pass?

If Singaporeans don't have enough money to retire, they should not retire in JB. Because JB is not alot cheaper than Singapore. Their chicken/duck rice is already above S$3 (after conversion), and a meal at a middle class japanese restaurant at JB City Square is probably just 20% cheaper. If you cannot retire in Singapore, then you should NOT retire in JB because even the Johoreans need to come over to Singapore to work to survive there. So, it does not make economic sense at all. PLUS...if you have an apartment over in Malaysia you will 100% encounter problems with maintenance and utilities. And because many of the properties are sold to foreigners who don't even stay there, their estate funding often has shortfalls, meaning they don't have enough money to upkeep the facilities for you (Landed has its own set of problems). Sometimes they even shut down the elevators (imagine climbing the stairs when you are above 65 years old). And you will face tons of foreigners or transitional renters or Airbnb tenants beside you in your neigboring units if they are occupied (otherwise empty units beside your apartment). You run a very serious risk of getting your things stolen/lost with many transitory tenants. Of course you will still have to pay your property taxes even if you don't stay there and their tax system is different. If you stay there 365 days you need the MM2H visa which is available at a cost of at over S$200k (inclusive of other administrative costs). Go dig. Try over staying and you can end up paying even S$1k per day (happened to some people already). There are many problems the property agents won't tell you. Conclusion: DON'T RETIRE IN JB EVEN IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO RETIRE IN SINGAPORE. If seriously no money, move further north.

What singaporeans are doing is actually exporting our inflation to our neighbours, just like how America exported inflation to the rest of the world. Bringing in cash alone doesn’t do anything for Malaysia, it has to translate to an increase in goods and services available in Malaysia for the population to consume. This reminds me of the few occasions in supermarket where I would find the same brand and product would costs more elsewhere. It's actually due to the fact the place of manufacture is different. For peace of mind, we would probably be willing to pay more for that food product made in Singapore where there is more assurance of quality rather some other country. Similarly, we would probably be willing to pay a premium to live in Singapore. Same same but still different.

Yes, go over now and then for a day drive in the countryside now and then, eat cheaper seafood (which my Malaysian colleagues said overpriced and actually blamed us!), have a good and cheap massage and car wash, and do a little shopping especially for those items that Singapore does not have or allow. Not everyone can afford the rising cost of living, the pressure of food and daily necessity increasing. So if people in the lower income bracket will really find it hard to just survive in Singapore. Mr Loo, I totally agree with you on that this comment in the telegram is a serious matter to talk and finger point about. I enjoy the time with my family in Malaysia during the short holiday trips, we go in together in a 4 Gen-family group to places of interest and enjoy the food there. Retirement choice globally or locally should be kept as an option rather then just throwing this idea aside. Thank you, Mr Loo for your constant videos on life advices.

Singaporeans can expect more inflation, as nearly 80% of our food comes from Malaysia. With the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) appreciating by about 7%, this will likely lead to further inflation here. Currently, the Ringgit is trading at RM3.25 per Singapore Dollar (SGD), according to CIMB SG exchange rates.

You said you don't live in Singapore much, so why would you be shopping in NTUC? You will also probably do most of your shopping in JB, so how would you compare prices and be shocked? Everything in Singapore is imported. I agree that durians sold in NTUC or Sheng Siong should be more expensive than JB. Less fresh too.

Thumbs up for you Sir. I was back JB after 4 years, the Grab service is great, the food as Mr Loo mentioned is toxically too good. The beer is expensive, but the wine is value for money. Nothing wrong with looking out for better valuable for our hard earned SGDollar. Every country has dangers, one must be street smart even in certain places here in Singapore. Would love to be able to Airbnb a few months in different states of Malaysia/ Thailand upon reaching retirement.

From The Telegraph: [Mr Trump told a town hall in Flint, Michigan, on Tuesday night earlier this week that a rate cut would suggest the “economy is now not good … Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to do it.” The former president has previously suggested he would take away the Fed’s independence if re-elected and set interest rates himself.] Having Trump re-elected as POTUS may not be good for US stock market if he really intends to do the above

i live with alot of such myopic singaporeans; they mainly live a sheltered life, with rich parents and irrational thoughts and assumptions. to be fair to them, they never knew nor appreciate what is poor/rich, and fruits of labor and hard work. they usually cant achieve much in life thou there is no need to care about them: they can live off their parents wealth without amounting to anything. best thing i can comment on such pple is, let them live their life, and never give more than 1cent to their thoughts, cause there is never a true reflection of what they really know.

In fact, many Malaysian born Singaporeans don’t want to retire in Malaysia because they want their children to have better education and better work opportunities! They are more daring than the local Singaporeans to invest because they don’t depend on government subsidies as they are not given priority by the Malaysian government because they are non Bumi!

True. If you are not in the high earning field. Very difficult to earn million++ to retire comfortable in Singapore. Frankly speaking 1 million will be the minimum retirement sum required after 30 years. Because of inflation. One should include inflation until he reach 75 years old. A 30 years old man should include 45 years of inflation. There will be more than 1 million for Enhanced Retirement Sum.

The more open spaces,Fresher Air,..and Generally, the Less Judgmental, Arrogant Materialistic Singkies..., as an example It is most un-wise, to say, which place is "Better" And Idiotic-Foolish to base judgements only on the Monetary-Costs-of-Living. Please, Re-adjust Your Perspectives of seeing Johor & Singapore as "separate", but the Fact that we are part of a Bigger South East Asian Family. Mr.Loo' ,... Don’t be bothered about such comments. There are many naysayers and perceived atas not well to do Singaporeans who made such comments. I’ve known of many rich Singaporeans who owned 2-3 full paid up condo collecting rental income every month in SG but bought landed homes , residing in JB, KL and Penang for the lifestyle. The same people who made such comments are the same people who said Malaysia is not safe! Why bother about such comments! Don’t waste your time justifying. They just want to be screwed by the high costs. Let them be! lol

Mr Loo, you are humble and righteousness. It is up to Singaporean to retire in Malaysia. She shouldn't label borderline. If She is rich it is her business. In Chinese 10 years fengsui rotate. she is arrogance and look down on people. Many rich China people like Jun wei dan xin 俊玮淡新,a China citizen become a PR or Singaporean. His wife is teaching music in NUS, also bought landed house in JB went for medical check up in JB. Many people like the people and food there.

Bikit Indah JB is a very good place to stay with gated communities and you have a direct bus to 2nd Link... Crossing causeway takes way too long.. Even with the MRT coming up, the 2nd link by bus would be very good. In SG supermarkets, many items are normally marked up 10 times or more so pay for costs and the costs of other goods failing to sell..

On cleaniness and safety, you can’t beat Singapore, even most European country are unsafe. Try walking in London , Paris or Rome. London is a stabbing capital of the world and Paris’ streets are full of trash. If you want to enjoy living in JB then do what the locals do and go where the locals go. Austin, horizon hill and ecoflora is good place to enjoy clean and safe experience. JB isn’t just taman pelangi, KSL or jalan Abdullah Tahir.
