Hurricane Gilbert devastated Jamaica, passing directly over the island September 12-13,1988. An extremely powerful tropical cyclone with the eye measuring 40 miles wide, slammed into Jamaica as a category 5 hurricane with winds reaching 175 miles per hour, killing hundreds of people. A one month state of emergency was declared across several parishes, water and electricity services took months to be restored with almost 1 million Jamaicans seeking public shelters.

I remember everything. Every light pole on my street fell down. No electricity for months. Like 6 months. When school resumed we had no roof. So pure sky. Food was scarce . No gas so we had draw for the coal stove. Bully beef till mi tyad. We had to boil water almost 1 year. I could go on and on about Gilbert. It destroyed Jamaica.

@UntappedLegacy I left Kingston the Saturday afternoon before Gilbert hit. Weatherman Roy Forrester didn't mention a direct hit until Saturday night's weather forecast. Returned to Jamaica Thursday after Gilbert hit, on the first flight to Jamaica, an Air Jamaica Airbus from Miami laden with more generators than passengers. 🤔

That WASN'T the problem. It took a last minute turn but NO ONE in Jamaica knew until Sunday, September 11, 1988. So NO ONE had stocked up on ANYTHING or boarded up. That Sunday was extremely hot. So early Monday, people were on the road, at shops/supermarkets trying to buying food, trying to batten down ON THE MORNING of the hurricane. And on THAT fateful Monday morning, many STILL didn't know.

@@tj6742When it hits directly with the eye passing over the island, you get total disaster. The eye wall has the strongest winds so that's why a Cat 3 can seem stronger than a Cat 5. Ivan's eye was in the sea near the south coast so the entire island wasn't impacted that terribly.

Please remember the distribution of MOST of the relief supplies was done by the PNP administration of 1989.... Remember that PM Seaga deliberately halted the distribution of relief supplies because he said he didn't want it to be used as vote buying ....so close to the 1989 election. Remember to that when Fae Ellington ask Manley what was his greatest disappointment in politics in the retirement interview with Manley.... Michael Manley responded...."One word... ZINC" He was referring to the unfair/ partisan distribution of ZINC that took place by PNP representatives. I knew of one PNP councilor in my area that used the zinc to make his fence, storeroom and sold some!!

@@456loveluck Take note of the pressure. This is how the strength is measured, the lower the value the stronger the storm. Gilbert 888 mb, Beryl, 938. Infact Gilbert was the strongest until overtaken by Wilma: The top 5 are listed here: 1. Wilma (2005): 882 millibars 2. Gilbert (1988): 888 millibars 3. "Labor Day" Hurricane (1935): 892 millibars 4. Rita (2005): 895 millibars 5. Allen (1980): 899 millibars
