I wanted to answer a few of the many questions I get about making custom lures. Particularly in this video, I am showing you how to properly dip a custom lure into KBS Diamond Strength Epoxy. Thanks to Tong-Uk Yi for your questions, I really hope this helps. Big shout out to your students. I can't wait to see how their lures turn out!
Please leave me comments and questions in the comment section below, and thank for watching! Happy holidays and Happy Casting from Jekyll Baits!

Dip only one time. As long as your KBS has been stored properly, it stays thin. Immediately after dipping, hang vertically head up tail down. Add a “drip wire” to the tail eyelet to help pull excess clearcoat from the lure

awesome video. exactly what I've been looking for. I've been interested in switching to the KBS. it is very hard to get ahold of though, but I have tracked down a source. I have heard it can be tricky, with trying to prevent it from hardening once opened. it seems this has worked for you. another trick, to reduce the air volume in the jar, is to add marbles. just make sure they are clean, glass ones.

Would you or do you sometimes dip it more then once like maybe 2-3 coats just once every hour for couple hours? Curious if it makes lures seem thicker and more glossier. I use the aerosol version of KBS and noticed it makes a huge difference spraying it 2-3times. Or Is the thickness of the liquid kbs just good by only 1 pass

@@chonch12414 i used to use etex exclusively. I loved it, except that quite often it would fish-eye, no matter how careful i was with handling the lure. That reason alone, was mainly why i switched to kbs. No regrets at all. Dip and hang, it doesn't get easier. And, it dries much, much faster as well. What i do, to remedy the build up at the bottom of the lure(my lures have no tail eyelet), is lightly dab it with papertowel as it builds. It only needs fone for a short while, then it's already hardening enough that it stops.

Did you ever say anything about that lobbing on bottom question? I’ve pretty much fixed that just by going by and cleaning it up a little til it hardens enough but I still have some issues with that ridge developing on the backs or bellies just at the bottom, usually with tiny air bubbles in it. Not sure about that because it appears random but I know I’m missing something.
@Jekyll424

On occasion I get a tiny bit of pooling, I clean it too. As far as bubbles go, that’s only ever happened when I’ve done something wrong, like prolonged air exposure, or accidentally changing the compound of the KBS

@Jekyll424
@Jekyll424 4 года назад
I know that as long as it’s stored properly it will go a long way. Having said that I just finished testing the new version of KBS Diamond Clear that is not on the market yet. With regular storage and a 2/3 empty jar, it stayed in its liquid form without hardening for over 30 days! As soon as they announce when it’s released I’ll let you know. In the mean time, try a small can. Try the pint! Let me know if you need a discount coupon

100% KBS. Reducing it changes the chemical composition in negative ways. As long as it’s kept the way KBS suggests you keep it, it preserves very well, for a very long time. But! It is a solvent based epoxy, so always wear your respirator and work in a well ventilated area.

@Jekyll424 6 лет назад
If you’re working with a lure that’s one solid piece, hanging it straight up and down is the easiest. It does level out as long as it has a way to drip off of the bottom eye hook (hang a thin piece of wire from it). If you’re brushing it on a multi jointed lure like a glide or a Rapala Style, repositioning might be necessary

I just started using kbs, only done maybe 10 squarebills but I’m having issues with it globbing pretty bad on the bottom of most of them. I’m doing it exactly like you are with drip wire and everything but it’s still leaving enough mess that it’s ruining the tail end when I try to clean it up. Some js look bad and some it pulls the paint off. And on some I even get a little ridge of clear on the back of bait js above the tail which I assume is bacause it’s backing up. I don’t have the issue with S cranks only squarebills, you think it’s the angle? Maybe I need to also tend to them with a Qtip as they dry? Or is there something I can do to make it easier?

That’s weird, maybe humidity in south Texas or something. It’s working fine so far just cleaning the globbing on bottom eye Eat as it dries but the ridge of air bubbles still js seems to form at random. I can dry 5 of the same baits hang the same way and one maybe 2will get it. It usually happens when the clear has gotten very gummy and I’d be afraid to try to clean it off. I’m very maticulous about air exposure to the point I lay mason jar lid back on bottle between baits even tho it will only be 20 seconds or so til the next one is done. This is my first batch of kbs and I have not adde anything although I’ve heard people say when it starts getting thicker js js add some thinner to it instead of discarding, I purchased a bottle of the thinner made for it from kbs to try when that time comes. The only thing I can think of is that there is a window unit and a ceiling fan blowing in my shop and maybe all the wind is effecting somehow so I’m gonna set up a wire inside a large cupboard and put a dehumidifier in with it, see how that works.

Hi. Not sure if you are still receiving messages from this post since this was posted in 2017. I just came across your video and had a question regarding the clear coat you're using. How long does it take to dry, where you can handle without leaving finger prints etc. I've called the company I bought this from and couldn't ever get a straight answer as to how long. Thought I would ask you since you, it seems as if you've been using diamond coat for a while and have some experience with it. Thanks for your help.

Tim Walker I still get messages. I can touch it with gloves after 8 hours, but I consider it touchable and fishable after 36 hours. After that... rock solid and doesn’t yellow. It can be chipped with excessive fishing just like every other lure, but I really like it

I really want to try KBS, but i dont think my lures will enable me to. My problem would be how to hang them so they could/would drip properly/adequately. I make my own lures, out of wood. I have 2 designs, but neither have a loop at the tail. My eye-hooks are on the belly, about 1/3 up from the tail, and the other, the tow point, is at the front, in the cup-face. My other style, has no eye-hooks at all. Has a cup-face, and then a through-the-body hole, at a 45 degree angle, coming out on the belly. And i rig with a chain or barrel swivel running through the body. I can't, for the life of me, figure out a way that would enable me to hang these so the clear would drip off properly. I've been using e-tex, which is great, but a simpler dipping process would have been much easier. Might have to stay with how i'm doing it though.

i came up with a less frustrating way to hang lipless. I hang it by the line tie eyelet and on the tail eyelet i add a drip wire with a lead weight to "pull it down". works great for me.

Different animal entirely BUT! It can be used to clear baits. It will smell to high heaven and your house will smell like the nail salon at Walmart, but it subsided after a bit. Use three coats, let it hang for a week or so before you use the lure. It will yellow and chip over time but it's not horrible and shouldn't be embarrassing if your limited on options or just starting out 🙂
