My speakers have the potato masher and bullet tweeters. I purchased a separate pair of bullet tweeters for other speakers, and someone for who knows what reason painted them an ugly olive green. But the price was right, as they can be expensive. And no one will ever see them, unless they stick their face up against the grill of the speaker.

No kidding that's because old is better. That's when things were made well. Anything now in speakers or anything else example wash machines is sh_t. All about money, and the newer generation are possessed by evil. They accept what is, they don't have a brain to think for themselves. By the way I have a set of JBL speakers from 1993. I still want to refoam the deteriorated bass speakers. I purchased new but retro huge floor bi-amble 15" bass BIC America speakers in 2015 for 99.00 each through Wal-Mart.com; I'm sure a one time exceptional buy.

I totally agree that Alnico sounds more musical. The next time someone less able to let their ears tell them the truth I offer this info. It that was given to me by an engineer in the JBL pro division while I was working as a product manager for JBL consumer. After I mentioned that I felt drivers with Alnico sounded better. He said Alnico magnets could focus more energy in the voice coil gap and in a much more linear way. So it's not just about magnetic power which the spec freaks to cling to.
@kfl611
@kfl611 2 года назад
How would you compare Alnico speakers with similar electrodynamic speakers / field coil speakers?
@theaterboyeBay
@theaterboyeBay 2 года назад
@@kfl611 I prefer Alnico over Ceramic/Ferrite magnets. Field Coils would be better than both those other types. I have to qualify this by saying I have not done any listening with Neodymium so can't comment on drivers using that material. I worked for JBL many years ago and ask all the engineers on the pro side why I felt the older Alnico drivers sounded better then the newer ceramic types. Most of them said the ceramic was better until I got to one of the older guys who said that Alnico is better even though it typically spec's with less magnetic energy. He said Alnico was able to focus the magnetic energy in a more linear way. I can only add that when I listen through systems with alnico drivers I feel they sound more like music and field coils even better
@kfl611

@@theaterboyeBay Thanks for your comment/reply. I have a pair of headphones, that look like what was typically used in the 1920's, but they are alnico. If all that is correct, then neodymium magnet should compound that even further. I read an article in Speaker Builder magazine several years ago by someone from JBL who said that this material would allow for higher excursion capability without sacrificing efficiency and that it was the material of the future. He showed a diagram of a JBL loudspeaker showing how the magnetic circuit would look and that it would be different to allow for the neodymium magnet's extra focus because of it's energy.

The same complement of drivers in a C50 size cabinet would have some theoretical advantages but I'm not sure this would prove out to be better sound than the Apollo C51 - while the C50 would likely have a bit more extension in the low bass the much larger Front Baffle size may detract from its performance compared to the C51 Apollo - this being said I have only ever compared this Apollo to the dual bass driver models

Oneness100 . cables don't matter you fucking lunatic.
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 10 лет назад
Yeah, they do. It's already been proven, unfortunately YOU didn't read the memo. it's been proven about 20 years ago with the research that MIT Cables did. They can measure a response curve of a cable when they perform the articulation measurements and other measurements that can prove that a design of a cable WILL affect an analog audio signal. Many TOP recording and mastering studios use a variety of top end cables to ensure as much neutrality of the audio signal. Leading Mastering and Recording engineers like Bob Ludwig re cabled his entire Mastering Studio several years ago with Transparent Cables, SkyWalker Sound redid their studio for recording film soundtracks, classical recordings, and foley recordings with MIT Cables. Many of the top symphonic orchestras use Transparent, MIT, and other top end cables for their recording equipment from microphone cables, to interconnect cables and speaker cables to ensure a neutral signal. Basically what a cable does is acts like a filter. Depending on all of the various aspects of a cable, will alter the way they pass audio signals through them. The aspects of a cable can include the meturgy, how it's wound, cable geometry, dialectics used, termination, whether it has filter boxes or other types of methods to affect how that cable is going to behave. Some companies use solid core, to variable thickness stands of wire wound to specific specs, various types of dielectrics, etc. Up until MIT Cables started performing test measurements, there really wasn't anyone that could measure what they wanted to measure. Actually, the engineer at MIT Cables went to HP and helped them design one of the most precise measurement tools so they could actually measure what they wanted. That test equipment costs $100K which MOST engineers are obvious to the existence because they aren't taught this information in college, this is research that's been done by private companies. Go do your homework and READ all of the technical information on MIT Cables web site, their patents and then maybe you should set up an appointment with MIT Cables, bring your cables in to have them measure how well your cables work and then do a sit down listening test after you've been proven with objective measurement tests to know what to listen for. If you listen to mostly highly compressed music, it may not be as easy to hear, which is a large degree why YOU may not be able to hear. The other aspect is that your ears have not been trained to know what to listen for, or you are just deaf. Cables can make an improvement, some can make it sound worse and sometimes there is no difference between one cable and another on a partiular system. The problem is that it's impossible to test every conceivable setup. But it is possible to measure cables to obtain a response curve as to how those cables with alter or not alter the audio signal. So bottom line, don't be ignorant because you don't know as much about cable design as people that spend their days performing measurement tests using hundreds of thousands of dollars of test equipment and having leading industry experts that do mastering and recording at major production studios that their job is to LISTEN TO subtle differences in audio equipment.
