We had a 1st gen Echo in our master bathroom for listening to music in the morning ru-vid.comUgkxABghAEkaIDGZfHRBH3D3rBrlraNmnC71 and while in the shower. I didn't realize how tinny and awful the sound output on the original Echo was until we replaced it with the Studio. It was a sonic upgrade far beyond what I was expecting. Just wow. I love it because it's like having speakers IN the shower. My friend likes it because the music is so loud that she can no longer hear me singing. So that's a win-win.
The Charge 5 has a little crisper sound, but it isn't that much difference. It does look a little sharper than the Charge 4. The difference for me would be the pricing. I've bought at least 5 or more of this brand of speaker since 2016 for family and myself.
I have both. Looking back, getting the newer Charge 5 was not necessary at all. Financially, it was stupid of me- actually. The Charge 4 is awesome without fault. Charge 5 sounds great also, but there is no reason to get one if you already have a Charge 4. I like both and do not prefer one over the other... Though the Charge 4 does have the Aux input, which is missing in the newer Charge 5. I guess, if you have money to blow, get both, but don't expect a noticeable difference. In my real life use, I can't tell a meaningful difference at all.
Thanks for your feedback. I've got the Charge 4 and was thinking about getting a Charge 5. I love my Charge 4. It is everything I expect of a portable "small parties" speaker and then some. You've helped me make up my mind. I'll stick with the 4......
@@richardpalmer8478 you've got this right. They really are both great- and neither one is better than the other. I still use both-- but actually grab the charge 4 more than the 5 because since I've had the 4 longer, on the outside, it looks more rugged and scratched up-- and it makes me less conscious about just grabbing it with dirty hands and putting it on, reallying, just about anywhere. I find myself being more aware when I grab the 5, like "I don't want to get tit dirty." My charge 4 in grey is AWESOME!!! Love it!!!
@@richardpalmer8478if anything wait for a sale and get another charge 4 to link together. I have two and an Xtreme 2. I mix and match depending on the situation and size of the crowd. My rule with jbl is wait for the new models to come out before getting/upgrading to save money. I’ll start thinking about upgrading when the charge 6 and Xtreme 4 have been released for more than two years. Then the charge 5 and Xtreme 3 will been at their lowest prices. That’s when they are priced more appropriately. When they are new they are always over priced compared to the competition.
Jbl charge 5 has more soundstage than charge 4. The tweeter do help on the high frequency part and the mids are bit forward. Bass is really there without compromising the mids and highs. It's a fun sounding speaker. Can't wait to get charge 5 ❤️❤️❤️
Comparing the two with two different mp3 players or whatever isn't accurate as one could push more volume (yes even thru Bluetooth) and have diff EQ settings than the other one so as much as this review would've been awesome, it's not accurate by a long shot, use the same device to send music to both of them. That would be an accurate review
Exactly. Same with phones and different music apps. There's a lot of difference. For example, I've got a JBL partybox 310. And if I use it with the same (offline) music app app, it sounds way better with my old Samsung phone, compared to a brand new Oppo and Huawei model. All without equalizer, or any other special settings. Btw, if your device/app have these options, always turn them off in the phone settings or in the music app you're using: dynamic normalizer and/or AVLS. These settings are there to protect your hearing when you are wearing earbuds on high volumes. But they're ruining the sound on speakers in any form.
Yeah that charge 5 is almost on par with the extreme 2 especially at around 40% to 60% volume. If they wanted to I know they could do something like kef with 2 subs going inside each other for the same small footprint but I know the price would spike to like 500 or more lol but it would be such and awesome little speaker and it would just freak people out
By tapping on the passive radiator of a charge 4 and a charge 5, I can say that the resonant frequency of the charge 5 is slightly lower. However, I also have two charge 4 speakers, which brings us to another issue, hardware variants. One is an older model, and one of two revisions manufactured in China, known as the TL variant (first letters of serial number) or the charge 4J. I also have a newer one made in Vietnam. These are known as the TT variant or the charge 4Q. The resonant frequency between those two was also different, with the Chinese one one being lower, but not as low as the charge 5. I figured out this was because of a slightly thinner outer edge on the passive radiators on the Chinese one. They are still both genuine charge 4 speakers, just from different factories, so the difference in sound is unnoticeable. My charge 5 is one of two Vietnamese made versions, the NT variant or charge 5H.)
Not a lot of difference in sound quality but the Charge 5 edges the 4 with slightly more bass. The 4 is slightly muffled in sound though. I bought the Charge 5 a few days ago and it is my first JBL speaker. But if I had the 4 I'd probably still upgrade to the 5. I personally think the Charge 5 is the best speaker of all brands in its class and size.
I disagree with last sentence. I didn't have opportunity to listen Charge5 but I did borrow Charge4 from a coworker, after my Anker Soundcore Motion pluss died and really there is no comparison, Anker sounds way way better. It's so different, that even the songs sound different on JBL. A lot that you could hear with Anker, is not there with JBL. And as there's not much difference between Charge4 and 5 then, I'm pretty sure Anker is also better than Charge 5.
I just got the charge 5 at Best Buy for my work bumps. I gotta say I’m impressed. I just put it at low volumes and it sound perfect. The bass is nice and deep and doesn’t overpower the highs. Glad I went for this and not the flip. I do like the design and aesthetics for this when comparing it to the 4. The logo looks nicer. Also the aux is not a deal breaker for me because I haven’t used that in years. Thanks for the review.
I had the Megaboom and Megaboom 3: Then the Megaboom1 was a little louder, deeper base and more balanced sound. So the Charg5 will be definately way better then the Meg3. As Megaboom1 and 3 only have broad band speakers + passive radiator they are only comparable to Charge 3 & 4 (also broad band + passive radiator). The Charge 5 is a two-way speaker + passive rad.
I like the Sony better with the super bass and lights lol. Sounded really clear and clean at my local store. I’m going with the jbl since it’s more portable and cheaper. Still has good bass and clarity is great!
I prefer the design of 4 better with small jbl logo. Sound wise, 5 has better sound. I ordered my charge 5 yesterday, I am waiting for it to get it. It is my first bluetooth speaker.
Good review. Charge 4 sounds better range quality to me. Max volume is similar. Charge 5 loses mid range as you implied by the type of music one wants to play. Thank you.
I’d say the bass is a slight better on the charge 4 but you really get a more enjoyable wider stage and clarity with the 5. I’d just get the 5 since I know someone who has the 4 lol. Plus the 5 is the newer model so I don’t mind having the latest variant. The 4 is amazing don’t get me wrong great deal for portable sound!
I can see the difference with the highs because of the tweeter in charge 5. But overall, it almost have no difference. idk about the bass difference tho
Hi, Unfortunately all JBL speakers come from different suppliers so it would be nice to hear Gray Charge 5 (ND version) vs TL version of Charge 5. They sound rather different from what i can hear on YT videos but none of them has recording quality that you have. I have already ordered Grey Charge 5 but after watching your review will probably go back unpacked. It lacks the treble and high mids which TL version supposedly has. The problem is which....... color is TL !? I'll probably just quit JBL altogether......it's too complicated.
Not much a huge difference to be honest. I’ll keep the Charge 4. But for people who are new to JBL speakers, of course get the Charge 5 if $ is not an issue, otherwise save yourself some $ and get the Charge 4 as I believe it’s much cheaper now.
The frequency response of the charge 4 is not correct.. i read about full rage driver technology and it says that if one driver playes all frequencies alone, it will have some of its high and low frequencies cut off.. instead of having 65hz to 20khz, we get around 80hz to 12khz... less highs and less deep bass So the charge 5 is the solution for the charge 4 problem. It has a tweeter that reaches those 20khz while the main driver has a focus on 200hz and down. Even goes down to 30 hz
I have had both speakers and the charge 3 before. Unfortunately I had to send back the charge 5 I do believe the battery was defective. It didn't hold a charge for more than 3 hours. Where the charge 4 when I got it new held a good 8 hours. I will let you know how the new charge 5 is when it arrives.
In the case of my Flip 4, upgrading to the latest firmware actually degraded the sound (especially the highs). I upgraded my Charge 4 too earlier...and I think that it had better sound back when I originally bought it. Can you confirm this?
Caution: Most of my friends have JBL speakers, usually Flip 4 and 5, it works awsome for max 1 year and then it gets battery and sound quality issues. Just FYI
My Charge 3 2 1/2 years old battery is still awesome and my xtreme 2 1/2 years old is also doing great. And i dont know someone with similar problems u said
I just got my Charge 4. I was using Charge 1 for 6 years and the sound never change even the slightest. The battery life may no longer like it was before but still lasts for I think 6 hrs or more at 60% volume
The comparison chart at 3:41 is inaccurate. Check it out. I will assume this is intentional just to sell more NEW gear. The question is did the reviewer know. JBL>Harman>Samsung have been following a trend of decontenting their lineup to cut costs. Comparative performance is a mixed bag depending on source material and listener preference. In addition, every generation JBL changes the connection technology so the previous generation will not connect to the current or future generations. This is blatant planned obsolescence. My advice is pick up a Charge 4 with a case now $50 less than the Charge 5 alone. Better yet, pick up 2 while the price is reduced. That way you will have STEREO. I just ordered my 2nd Charge 4 for this purpose. If you are going to use these with video or any other application where latency might be an issue, the Charge 4 has the AUX port which ELIMINATES latency. This is a HUGE advantage for the Charge 4 as it makes it more versatile.
Hi mate, are you referring to the party boost? the screen shot is from JBL website not from me, you are right they do that to sell new gear and as you said everyone does it, unfortunately that's business and it does upset me too.
@@shaktastik There were several but most importantly the frequency response, and USB C charging were the main inaccuracies IMO. Charge 5: 65Hz-20KHz. Charge 4: 60Hz-20KHz. Even though the Charge 5 SEEMS Bassier. I'm sure they are using different DSP (more bottom heavy). And they both charge via USB-C. I just got my 2nd Charge 4 yesterday. Stereo works well through the app, but they want to know your location for the app to work. I also have used the Charge 4 like a TV sound bar and the latency free AUX port is essential. No offense intended, Rock on!
Having two charge 4's doesnt mean having clear sound and deeper bass. Maybe louder. I have the charge 4, and once i could i ordered the charge 5.. Because im missing the highs on the charge 4, and the fact that it distorts at high volume. Single full range driver has a cut of highs and lows because it cant compress all frequencies together perfectly without having some kind of distortion or cut on some of the low end and high ends. Even check on the internet.. i guess that the rated frequency response is not accurate, and is standing at 80hz to 12khz. The charge 5 has a tweeter that goes to 20khz while the main driver goes for 200hz and down. I rather having one better speaker than taking 2 worse ones with me to everywhere..
I've got charge 5 yesterday as my charge 3 battery died. I do not know how JBL did it, but back in 2016 when I bought charge 3 it cost 170€ and charge 5 140€. It's 30€ cheaper and if you consider inflation it is even more cheaper. The charge 4 made no sence to me at all, it was literally same speaker with downgraded functionality.
SERVICE CENTRE DONNOT SERVICE THEIR PROUCTS AFTER WANNANTY PERIOD. THEY ASK TO PAY COURIER AND INSPECTION CHARGES. AFTER PAYING IF WE SEND THE PRODUCT, THEY SEND IT BACK WITHOUT SERVICING
Is the water and dust proof information reversed? The Charge 5 clearly has it's USB port outside the flap whereas the Charge 4 has all of it's ports inside flap.
It doesnt I read about that and the reason that the charge 5 has more bass is because the charge 4 has only one full range driver.. usually full range drivers has a cut on the low end and high end.. you can hear that the charge 4 is missing highs because the one driver struggles with playing lows and highs together.. so the real rated frequency response is around 80 hz to 12khz.. thats why the charge 5 having a seperate twitter also playes deeper and higher cuz the driver has a crossover of 200hz and down
Charge 5 have random frequency, 65Hz-20kHz or 60Hz-20kHz. I have TL by 65Hz and my friend ND by 60Hz. In real live Charge 5 have deeper bass then Charge 4, even on 65 Hz.
No, Most of the People are saying that the Bass goes deeper and Sounds better. In a few Minutes my charge 5 gets delivered. Then i can give you an Update.
@@joeyhu0715 its here and wow... I have to say that i don‘t have the charge 4 here at this moment, but a charge 3... The bass is way more deeper than i thought and the highs are perfect! The charge 3 has no chance against it xD I would say that the charge 5 also sounds better and deeper then the charge 4 :)
@@boomy4542 Ha! Got it~ Then I'll probably get a CHARGE 5 after it's available in my country. I'm from Taiwan and it might probably be available in April (not sure...). I definitely know the feeling when getting a new speaker which sound quality is way better than expect lol
@@alexanderwinter6564 get the red charge 4 i wont pay 80 bucks more for no aux for sepparated connection whats the name party boost??? wtf.....charge 4 in res got it for 100 bucks at amazon perfect for the summer
For double the cost. Heavier, bulkier, and less portability. Just because it's a bigger, nicer, and more expensive speaker doesn't mean it's just better in general.
Not really... i compared both myself... xtreme 3 has more bass and a little bit louder.. but just a little bit Not enough for the size difference.. The c5 is way better for its size and price
