Big upgrade over the charge 4 in my opinion, i will probably sell my 4 and get a 5. The bass no longer distorts the mids and treble. That Charge 3 is really holding it's own though!
That’s kind of the trend I have also noticed with the JBL speakers. The flip 4 still holds ground with its stereo sound, the flip 5 is pretty dated with its single driver and the flip 6 is great too with its double driver setup. The charge is the same story. I personally hated the single driver and no tweeter, relying on all the frequency range to come from one relatively small driver.
@@grandtheftgamerytel flip 5 es más equilibrado. Y más potente que el flip 4, el flip 6 al subir volumen pierde sus bajos y aumenta demaciado los agudos. No se si sean todos los modelos.
Finally! I've been waiting for a comparison between the Charge 5 and the older models. Great review, man! Although, could you talk a little bit slower next time? I'm having a hard time understanding sometimes 😅 Thank you!
@@alanrossreviews can you tell me, when using purely for bass signal, which gives more bass(loudness/low frequency) - the jbl charge 5 or the minirig sub 3 ?
I LOVE my charge 3 I used it daily for about 3 years and is my go to traveling speaker. My onyx studio 6 is for parties and work. Got my charge 3 for $90 in 2017 best deal ever. I left it on my porch for about 4 months and forgot about on accident and it still held its full charge
Agree with your assessment that Charge 5 has a meaty sound. I first used mine during a 'guys weekend', a friend put away his Bose Revolve, the Pill and another speaker were never brought out. It sounded great indoors, on the porch and in the golf cart.
Now the really interesting comparison would be Charge 5 vs Motion + . Charge 3 and 5 are very similar except from the rumbling low bass on 5. 4 is worse overall with less clarity.
It sure is! I originally bought an open box (tried saving some money!) and returned it because it sounded really bad. I decided to buy and new one and glad I did! 👍
The Charge 5 totally reminds me of the Xtreme 3's sound signature. Havent A-B'ed both charts side by side but totally sounds very similiar. Past generation JBLs usually rolled off earlier in the higher spectrum around 18khz, they seem to be fixing this problem with all the new ones. Sometimes it works, like the PB300 vs 310, sometimes it doesnt, as we can see here. Guess it works better with bigger and not smaller speakers. Also, deeper bass is always a welcomed addition! Another great one Alan!!!
@@alanrossreviews most probably because the cost of these speakers are so high and retail is so low they struggle to put anything more expensive on it.
@@yashveerjugnarain7187 Soundcores arent great sounding either if not because of that built in equalizer. Great for the money, average sounding at best.
@@AbsoluteFidelity let's agree that JBL's stock tuning is worlds better than Soundcore's, however an embedded equalizer is always more welcome than a tune you're stuck with. Also, I'm sure JBL could dig in their parts bin to make a speaker with the form factor of the Motion+ with a combined 6 drivers/radiators and then proceed to price it at around $300
Great review and comparison, and thanks for including the Charge 3! I am among the ones who still enjoys using two of them in stereo with the original Connect.
@@alanrossreviews I was able to downgrade both of them to v5.4, the lowest firmware publicly avaible which still uses the old Connect. I did that by using an unofficial app called ConnectPlus from @andrew7985. Both .apk file and firmware files (v5.4 and v7.3) are still available on GitHub. I read the flashing process is a bit risky, but I tried it anyway and it worked just fine for me.
It's good to know that at least the 5 is an improvement over the previous generations but I have no doubt it will be trounced from a price/performance standpoint in your upcoming videos when the motion plus/boom are involved. Awesome job! 👍
@@alanrossreviews really? Please oh please do a comparison with the c1 to the c5, just to see the improvements made! I and i think many others would love that😊
i bought a charge 5 black in 2023 and i looked under the box and i got a TL model and recently i bought a used charge 4 black and turns out it was also TL
there is always a delay, the question is how much delay. not noticing delay is not the same having no delay. i always stress results vary depending on platform and devices as bluetooth latency is very much about the chain rather than just the speaker. you see no delay i see lots of delay, who is representative?
Bass-up mode on the motion plus is terrible. It's hurting ones ears. Go with a decent custom setting, it will have much better quality bass and a much more enjoyable frequency response. Check Alan's settings, or check the custom settings of oluv. These make the motion+ shine like never before. It's amazing! Just never press that bass up button ever again - you'll need the app to set it back to custom.
Do you know if there's any way to connect a JBL Charge 5 to a JBL Charge 5 Wifi? Bought a Charge5 Wifi on Ebay not realizing it was a different model then the 5. U can't use party boost or stereo mode using these two together. Any work around?
I can’t believe they haven’t fix the latency problem and really they have made it worse because the charge 5 doesn’t even have a wired connection option available
same. also from what i felt with newer speakers is that they have more intense radiation...gives me a headache, the older ones till 4.1 BT version are more mild. Sticking to my Charge 3...the rest can fap to motion plus all day :-)
I agree that it sounds as if JBL finally fixed the Charge 3 by creating and bass enhancing the Charge 5. JBL should be careful in what they charge for their speakers. A couple of years ago I had sold my Charge 3 about a year later I picked up a Soundcore Motion+. If one is only comparing the sound quality, in my opinion the Motion+ easily outshines the Charge 5 and gets much louder for a $100 price tag. Thanks for this wonderful review 👍
Another great review Alan talking facts n numbers rather than just opinions. So, Charge 5 vs 2 x flip 5's, same wattage, similar price with good timing, but how does the sound compare given you can widen the sound stage with 2 smaller speakers? I've gotta im actually really impressed with the flips paired in stereo and 2 x boomboxes is just comically bassy when they're positioned just right.
Absolutely hands down, the charge 3 is the best sounding of all of the charges. I had a 3 iwas having trouble with so they sent me a charge 4 to replace it.it sounds terrible compared to the 3. The sound is so muddy with the new ones
@@alanrossreviews i haven't heard the new ones. I really wish they would've just stayed with the charge 3 design, it would've been great. But, not all upgrades are good. In my opinion, they should've stayed with more speakers. The new speaker that they put in there isn't very good speaker. To me they are a glorified TV speaker. They use the same speakers in tvs.
@@alanrossreviews Going off of your A/B comparisons, I really like the sound of the Sony, while Anker I own and after awhile it leaves me feeling a bit dry. Its all so subjective mate, we get people around here claiming Flip 5 is the greatness all the time, so go figure ;)
I have the XB33, great speaker with impressive sound, but it really is lacking some volume. It's barely louder than my Flip 4...other than that it's great speaker but definitly not loud enough compared with the Charge
Hey thank you for this review. Could you down the road Review the Altec Lansing Mix 2.0. I would like to hear you talk about it. Maybe compare the Altec Lansing to one of Soundcore’s that matches its size? Cheers!
Hey, I found out that there are 3 different versions of Charge 5. TL (which you have), ND and TT are there. The TT version is available from the Camouflage Charge 5 🙃
Between charge 3 and charge 4 which is better regardless of the price but evaluating sound in a full range without seeing that one is monophonic and the other is worth 2.0
could be next vid, xb33 vs c5 vs m+, since listening to the motion boom and being used to deep bass the lack of bass in the m+ is more of an issue to me now. you do get bass with the xb33, but its much smoother and slightly less detailed, so still deciding 😁
You're right for me at least, iv got a charge 3 and i actually like the sound of the charge 5, but dont like the charge 4, so looks like i will get the charge 5 sometime
Great review, thank you! I have the three from 2016 and loved it for years but need to replace as developed a rattle. Watched loads of reviews but should have watched this first... So JBL increase the price but take away aux in, speaker phone, stereo and a bloody power brick, increase the logo and hype the price?? I bought the 5 and the sound is richer somehow and the low bass is lush but now thinking I need to return and get the motion +? One of my issues with the motion plus is that it looks fragile compared to the JBL? I have two young kids and the speaker is bound to get knocked around... Do you think the motion + can hack it?
@@alanrossreviews Just checked your comparaison between XB43 and Extreme 3 and so I’d say I’m after the sound of the Extreme 3 for the price of the XB43! Like anybody else I suppose... 😆
@@alanrossreviews But seriously aux in is a must as I need to connect it to a Traktor Z1 for DJing on the go. I’m currently using a pair of Eris E5 paired with a Fostex miniSub (coming from music production), but would like something I can move more easily, also watch some internet content on it, so I guess a good all rounder for 150EUR would be nice (like the Sony with less upper bass and more depth).
@@alanrossreviews Also I’ve seen some pictures (on Amazon) of the Motion+ with an aux in next to the USB port and on the Soundcore website, the same photo without the aux in, so it’s a bit confusing...
I think Xtreme 3 is 30w on battery. It's a nice upgrade compared to Charge 4, I particularly like the angled up drivers. But I can't wait to see it being compared with Motion+ (And Motion Boom please !)
I got the charge 3 and 4 actually Charge 3 first Bluetooth speaker when I got my charge 4 yea I enjoy the deeper bass and the more mature sound but I missed the High end the stereo separation and especially the loudness yesh that took a mean hit so most of my questions have been answered Charge 5 is much louder than the Charge 4 deeper bass even tho on paper it's less I just wish it was stereo with a much lower price tag good God almighty that's why I don't have the Xtreme 3 to much for what it is but hopefully I can catch the charge 5 and Xtreme 3 on sale the only partyboost speaker I got is the Boombox 2 so I have to upgrade and do reviews but overall fantastic video my mom even laugh when you was imitating the kids naggin😅
@@alanrossreviews True but every speaker I got is either a JBL or Harman Kardon but Anker is killing it went it comes to best bang for buck but doesn't the 4 and 5 has deeper bass but the Anker Is much louder and I'll say hi to😄
Awesome review. I am now waiting for my 2'nd motion boom, I am really curius how they sounds in stereo. I have 2 Sony xb40 that i use as go to speakers for partys around the camp fire, as they are desent sounding and pak some punch, and they are pretty compact so plenty of room for lager in the backpack. So now I just have to see if the bigger bass and clearer sound of the "boom" is worth sacrifise some lager and bier for, as they are kind of bulkier with the handle and the bigger body, time will tell 😜
Have you had party boost connection issues with a stereo pair ?? They need to do an update I have the TT versions are they the latest or which ones are they ?? Not connecting really pisses me off they just loose each other any suggestions thanx from the US
@@alanrossreviews why what’s the problem they need to release a update oh JBL customer service sucks I couldn’t even understand the person I was talking too get someone that can speak English!!!!!!!!
I was so hyped by those bass test videos of charge 5....extreme excursions were going on the PRs...someone even concluded that c5 had better bass and highs than motion+ and also louder...now i remember there is a thing called fanboyism 😂
@@alanrossreviews maybe 100% idk he doesn't say anything... he's using bass up eq so thats why c5 sounds louder idk..i think anker should release an update for deeper bass response at low volumes it has that potential
it cant produce more bass, the drivers are too small and already distorts when pushed. i have a video that will show the relative bass between them. the motion plus in custom is much louder than charge 5, in fact even the xb33 in custom is louder.
When i watch the youtube videos, i noticed that C5 has more dynamic sound than the Boom (compression is not a big issue for me). I will wait you to decide :D
The boom is actually one of the most dynamic speakers ive measured but depends how you measure it. I will go back over the last stuff i did and measure the plr lu. Will let you know what it shows 😁
@@alanrossreviews Maybe depends of EQ settings of the Boom but i rather to wait your comparison cause many comparisons can be misleading. There are so many variables...
I have both 5 and 4 and some other and personalaly i love them but the 5 I feel like it has lost a little bass but way louder other than that absolutely love it
I like someone/Alan to explain for me about bass. Alan talks alot about upper bass is that the same as slap in the face kind of bass.. Can you still have a deep/low bass and upper bass?
Yes you can have a balance of all but its really about what dominates. People still love the xtreme 1 cause its upper bass heavy/dominate while the xtreme 3 is lowe bass dominate. Think of lower bass as cinema type bass, rumbly that vibrates through your body.
I really love your videos and bought a sony srs xb 43 after watching your reviews. I watch your videos almost daily even if I'm not looking to buy anything. But i don't understand when you use terms like upper bass, deep bass, lower bass, punchy bass etc. RU-vid and even google isn't helping either. So can anyone explain these terms to me? Because all I've found are videos explaining what frequencies bass, mids and treble belong to, but noting about upper bass, lower bass, deep bass etc.
In my videos i consider upper bass 100-200 hz, mid bass 65-100 hz and deep bass 30-65 hz. I dont measure below 30hz for these type of speakers normally because for most below that is so rolled off its just noise. Consider subwoofers are normally used at around 80hz and below. Kick drums dont go below 40hz.
I’ll stick to my motion plus can buy two more in price of charge 5, loved my charge 3 years ago now its gone now they stole it at work😅 hey mate im waiting your review at the new tribit stormbox pro vs the normal stormbox if you have boses it will help and can you compare it to the old motion plus thanks keep up your good videos funny and informative..
@@alanrossreviews It's a TL1126 with 0.7.4.0 software. I upgraded the software to the latest version (0.8.2.0) and used the App to set the EQ to bass+2 mid-1 treb+1 and it made a huge difference, I'm much happier now. Volume & Bass is better than C3 the rest is almost the same, but for me the C3 sound quality is a little better because of the stereo (or maybe I'm just used to what the C3 sounded like)
yup, trouble is if you like the sound of the charge 3 the charge 5 is sooo much like the charge 3 but with some extra bass extension its hard to resist. however for me the charge 5 is just the wrong side of shrill in the highs for a long listen.
I love the way they act the new charge 5 is now magically dust proof IP67. I’m pretty sure they have been like that for a while, however JBL saw another way to market their product haha! I guess they are struggling to market it without key features such as an aux port and a speaker phone.
