My man here is certified for sure. An actually useful comparison from someone who understands the physics of sound, with professional experience. Please keep the channel going, there’s not too many younger generation audio engineers spreading quality information (a lot of marketing/clickbait out there)
Coming from somebody who owns a HS8S to go run with my HS8’s, I approve and 100% agree with what you said about the Yamaha sub. It definitely doesn’t drop down to 22hz. About 30 at the most.
Thank you for sharing this details information for these 2 best Monitor Subwoofer. From my opinion as a YAMAHA HS8S owner, and I use it for my Home Theater setup with no quite big space, I find the bass and low frequency quality is good and smooth. But for more immersive booming effect, I can't and demand much since the driver size is only 8 inch. But for music listening, is more than enough. And I Plan to add one YAMAHA HS8S more for my Home Theater setup. From your reviewing, I really agree and understand, how JBL can outperformed YAMAHA, since it comes with bigger driver size which is 10 inch. If I haven't use YAMAHA HS8S, maybe I will switch to LSR310S, one is enough for my HT setup. But since I lack of space, This YAMAHA is most reasonable choice for saving space and quality. From many others review, I see this YAMAHA HS8S most suit for YAMAHA monitor speaker, if you have their HS speaker series. In this term, I don't say about the low bass or immersive power, but from many reviewers, YAMAHA engineers indeed design this subwoofer to match and blend with their HS monitor speaker series. And I believe, their engineers have some reason why choose a compact driver like 8 inch, instead of bigger like 10 or 12 inch. Lastly, from my own opinion, these two subwoofers are great, just depend on what are your preference and usage for. They both have their own advantages and characteristics. Despite of the different in driver size. Your reviewing and information are very useful, Thanks again.
I agree! My thoughts are that yamaha HS line focuses a lot on acuraccy in an afordable package. Using a bigger driver would mean having to sacrifice precision or afordability. JBL is not as intentional as Yamaha with acuraccy so they can get away with it, not worse, its just a different aproach or philosophy. You can just go with what you think you need, probably yamaha is better for mixing/mastering and JBL for producing (its more immersing).
First, I hope your recovery from Covid is going great my brother! Second, thank you so much for making this vid. I’m going to use the JBL’s with my JBL lsr305’s🤝🔥💯
This room is WAY too small to apply a sub. There isn’t proper sonic treatment even with tuned speakers. There is literally no realistic way to hear how these subs perform with the environment they were tested in. In a professionally treated studio the Yamaha’s make the JBL’s sound like overly punchy Target speakers.
It is definitely a smallish room but I have high and sloped ceilings so that helps. I will say subwoofers are the trickiest to apply, but I have used the yamaha sub in 3-4 different studios and it had the same result. These are budget subwoofers and I am assuming nobody who buys these are going to have the professionally treated studio you speak of. So using this sub in its intended context is important.
People are so shocked when an 8 inch sub doesn't shake the room like a 10 inch sub lol That 2 inches doesn't sound like much of a difference... but it is. So once again, apples and oranges
Hello! When I turn on my JBL LSR310s subwoofer, the subwoofer has a white LED but then starts to have a blinking white LED and does not produce bass sounds. What are there for me to do? Is the unit broken? Thank you!
@Ju1ce Audio bruh, I almost got up clapped like a good movie ending or when Ye divorced that trashadian (cause you know how they suck the talent out of men in their lives’ soul…but that’s not what this is about). Lol I’ve looking at reviews for a while now and like the other dude said, you really broke it down to where there was a lot of value and really helped. I have the JBLs and love ‘em. I also have the L308 monitors but switching to the HS8…but keeping JBL sub, which I did also get for 200 about 8 mos ago lollll
good morning! I have the yamaha HS8S sub, I put the volume at 60% on the song Blessed by Greg Ferreira, and the low notes distort as if something is taking off, does it happen on yours too? a loud and ugly noise.
Everything depends on the space you have. The yamaha seems quite new compared to the JBL and still has to break in. In Europe there are many bad reviews about the JBL, such as cheaply made plastic and noise. In a small room, a woofer is useless, but since I have a large space, I go for the Yamaha. The quality is of a higher level and is optimized for hs8 speakers, which are ideal for dance music.
Hi, do you really think it's that useless? I live in an apartment building so I have the HS5's, the front wall is almost entirely treated with 8" thick rockwool panels, can't treat the rear wall because of space constraints. I mainly produce, might occasionally mix and master too, but my question is, would getting the hs8s be such a bad idea if all I want is just the bass extension at lower volumes? I mean I will obviously not be blasting the woofer, that would piss off the neighbors too much, but what if I just leave it on at a lower level to provide some sort of lower layer of sound?
I made the mistake of buying the HS8s first. Going to grab the JBL tomorrow to compare, but based on your review I think I'll be returning the Yamahas and keeping the JBL.
I own YAMAHA HS8S, and use it for my Home Theater Setup. And after all, I really satisfy with the power, performance, appearance and with decent price. Because of its 8 inch driver only, it's better for the space with not so big. For a sub with 8 inch, I find the bass quality is better then others with the same size of driver. And I plan to add one YAMAHA HS8S more to add greater immersive low frequency and bass effects for my Home Theater. And I think it doesn't fair to compare this two subwoofer, because they are different in driver size. JBL can easy to outperform YAMAHA, and it's very decent, 10 inch vs 8 inch. But, thanks anyway bro for sharing this valuable review and knowleadge.
@@henrichandrewIts fair because they are both the same price! In entry level products thats the most important factor. JBL sub blows Yamaha at deepness but not in precission if they follow the same philosophy of the main monitors of the same line.
I picked up the jbl for 200$ too. I've been thinking about getting a second one. Any thoughts of having them both hooked up in a setup?. In my case I'm not using it for producing music. Just listening to music, watching movies, and playing games.
good review my man, I am torn between the JBL and the KRK S8.4...I am into tech house so for some reason I love the bass on most KRK products. Have you heard the s8 KRK by any chance?
Just purchased the JBL. It has the lows just as he states. The Yamaha sounds like shit IMHO. Why is it a subwoofer and doesn't get those sub levels? Great video.
Hey are those 5” Adam’s ? How do u like those without the bass ? I have the T7v’s thinking to upgrade idk how much more difference I can get for more than double the price
I consider buying the HS8S to complete my pair of Yamaha HS5. What is insufficient about the HS8S according to your personal experience? I have a small room and need massive bass, for I'm making bass heavy progressive psytrance.
@@alchemyst9393 I share the same conclusions as the uploader. Plays solid only down to 35Hz. also port noise comes in pretty early, so in songs where there's mainly base with minimal other elemets, it's quite apparent. The smaller the room, the smaller the bass. You can always turn down a sub, but you can't improve its extension. Get subs that go down to under 30Hz at -3dB, not "22Hz at -10dB" :D
@@Gamez4eveR I use my audio system subtly anyways due to neighbours... If I may ask: when does port noise occur? Only when pushing it to its limits or already at low volumes?
@@alchemyst9393 Moderate volumes, so already just under 80 dB at listening position. So, almost "loud". Regardless, loud or quiet, the thing outright doesn't output much under 35Hz unless in (I presume) a really big room. Disclaimer: decibels are often misunderstood, I recommend AudioScienceReview's video on them. I often listen to music at average SPLs of well over 90, have been doing so for years, am 25 now and still have what is considered "near perfect" hearing.
@@Gamez4eveR I have the Yamaha Hs7 monitors, what is best for me?, Should I upgrade to the Hs8 or just get the Hs8s Subwoofer?, Also my room is small to medium size with decent room treatment like (acoustic foams) instead of actual sound proofing panels that be in big studios
Lol, I read all the comments haha! Thank you for this! Im wondering though, since this is a two year old post, is there a new better option to get in JBL or different brand?
Hey man, thanks for this video. It really helped with my decision to get the JBL sub... Which Sonarworks bundle do you have by the way? Does the Speakers & Headphones option work if you are using a sub or would you need to get the multichannel because of this? Thanks again
@@ju1ceaudio Would have been killer to get it for 200$, it’s nice knowing I got a brand new one though. What monitors would you recommend with them? Right now I’m using some sterling mx5’s, and they sound on par to me to the hs5 from Yamaha, but at a lower cost. I’d like something with some extra extension, but there are just too many to choose from. Was thinking maybe the kicker 8 g5, but what would you go with?
No way possible are you getting 22 Hz from that Yamaha with any 8" woofer - absolutely impossible. I got the JBL S550P - 10" sealed, 300 watts rms, 500 watts peak. Just got it for $189.00 on sale through JBL. It's a 50 lb beast. Regularly priced at $599.00
I got you what would you like to see? I just it on isolation pads so I'm going to make a review on the isoacoustics pucks and that sub will be included.
@@ju1ceaudio Great, i would love to see some music playing while showing the woofer excursion. Want to see a sound comparison on both of those subs, benifits of having a sub (Should you get one or not). Any video you make with the sub i'll watch. And great cant wait to see that isolation pad video.
@@ju1ceaudio Yes bro im looking to get this JBL subwoofer month end hopefully. It really hard for me since im living in the carribean and shipping for me will cost just as much as the Sub ($419)
Hey man, great review thanks ! I have the a7x as well and I'm looking at these subs: Adam Sub 8 and Adam T10s. Have you tried any of these ? What would you recommend ?
Appreciate it bro, yeah the Adam sub 8 doesn't have enough head room to pair with the Adam a7x. But the sub10 is like 2k$ 😂 way to much in my opinion. I would try the t10s sub I've never heard it but I'm sure it would get you started.
@@ju1ceaudio thanks for answering :) I just ordered the adam t10s, the adam sub 8, the Presonus temblor T10 and the JBL LSR 310S for comparison let's see which one is the best :) have you tried the temblor T10 ?
I've only used the hs8s and the jbl lsr310s. It I've heard the presous one is decent. I'm honestly looking for a new sub to keep up with the speed of my adams as well. So let me know how the sub 8 is! Make a video comparison if you can I'm sure a lot of people want to see that.
@@ju1ceaudio I'll let you know for sure. So the JBL is not good enough in your opinion ? Looks like the JBL ist out of stock, it will arrive in 5-7weeks. All the other subs will be here next week 👍
It's good don't get me wrong, but it's just matching a budget sub with higher end moniters. Eventually I noticed the sub isn't as fast (transient-wise) as my moniters. Im sure if you buy a sub in the midrange price like the adams it will be quicker...hopefully😂
No noise from it. I had the same problem wiht my old 305s but what you gotta do is rip of the 3rd ground pin from the power plug! Thank me later by subscribing lol
No matter how flat it is on measurements when you put it in your room it's never neutral. But I do hear it pairs very well with hs5s I just don't think it extends low enough to justify owning the sub.
hey mane love the review. would you still recommend the jbl over the yamaha if i already have yamaha studio monitors? i currently have two yamaha hs8 studio monitors and i’m looking to add a sub but i’m worried about mixing brands with the sub and the monitors. does it matter if the brands are different?
@@ju1ceaudio lmao i already bought the jbl haha. wish i waited for the response. figured i should go with the jbl since it’s a 10 inch and i already have 8 inch monitors. honestly i’m just getting into audio so i’m not entirely sure what i’m doing. worst case i’ll just return the jbl for the yamaha if i’m not satisfied.
I never use xlf because it boosts some low end. i want it flat so i use 80hz. if your watching a movie or just casually listening xlf would sound better
