I can’t seem to pull out my old speedometer cable. It’s probably the original cable in there since 1962. I’m pulling as hard as I can with a pair of vice grips from behind the wheel but it won’t move. I got my new one from JBugs and I appreciate the fast delivery and included instructions.

If the circlip at the grease cap has been removed, hold the vice grips on the back edge and tap them with a hammer to free up the cable.

Replaced cable. Speedo cable now is stable, but the grinding sound is still there. Heard about applying grease (geeze) to the cable to fix this issue. Any tips on this? Thanks!

Will this procedure work on my super beetle 1974? If so Tha K you for the verry detailed instructions 👌

The Super Beetle cable is routed through the fuel tank well so removing and reinstalling the cable through the body is a little more involved. Hooking the cable up at either end is the same, although accessing the cable in 1973-1979 Super Beetles is done from the bottom/under side of the dash.

You skipped how to get the c clamp in the end of the cable. Any tricks would help. The rest is easy

Easy is a relative term. For me, installing a C-clip on the end of the cable is the easy part. I use whatever blunt object I have handy, whether it be a flat head screw driver, a pair of pliers, I've even used a wrench. Once the cable is pushed through the cap, and the groove for the clip is accessible, slide the open end of the circlip into the groove, then press it into place.

Will grease help significantly? I was trying to replace my cable today and it just won't budge. It would get to an inch and a half but would stop as if there is blockage but there isn't? It's a 63 if that helps

+Elvena Fae Grease probably won't help much. Double check that there isn't some sort of blockage (old grease or road debris) in the hole. You may want to try pushing a long, skinny screwdriver through to make sure the hole is clear.

JBUGS Sadly, I've already tried this and there isn't any blockage. I guess I'll have to give it a go again this weekend and maybe add some grease. Otherwise I haven't seen this problem anywhere so I'm kind of stuck

+Elvena Fae If you can get get a screw driver through try larger diameter screwdrivers or maybe a pipe cleaner to make sure the hole is clear before installing the cable. If you are still having issues feel free to call out tech line at 1-800-231-1784 and we will try to help as much as possible.

JBUGS There’s an awful grinding noise and vibration on the dashboard. Maybe is backwards!
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 3 года назад
@@giovanniprofeta3699 the grinding is most likely from inside the speedometer.

Are most speedometers interchangeable eg 64 in kph and 68 in mph?
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 3 года назад
Yes, Standard Beetle speedometers are fairly interchangeable.

does this also work on 1970 vw beetles?
@JBugsVWParts
@JBugsVWParts 8 лет назад
+ImmortalJake428 The speedometer cable installation is the same for all year beetles, yes. The only "exception" would be the fuel injected models which have an upper and lower cable and a counter box as a junction.
