In Nicarauga the driving is also crazy. But a expat said that since everybody drives crazy it is easier to know what to expect. Versus U.S.A. where the different attitudes can cause real confusion. Robert Burnett.

In 1980, my brother and I went to Yellowstone. Our first night there we were camping in a campsite in a stand of pine trees. 60 feet away from us was a volkswagon van blasting disco music. We were dumbfounded. In the middle of a pristine wilderness people brought the city. They polluted our experience and didn't even have the wilderness experience themselves. Totally mystifying and virtually unbelievable.

I understand totally. It happens here at the beach as well. I am not sure how some people can think that everybody has the same tastes in music or wants to hear it in an outdoor environment. My feeling is it is just being unconscious to the wants and needs of the other people around.

Thank you JC. I've found that the more things I own, I just end up spending more time worrying about how to protect them, clean them, or insure them. In the long run, your life is much more serene and stress free without things that aren't needed.

Yeah! 18 years old, away from mom and Puritan morals, on R&R from Viet Nam, good company and relaxation away from the war. I've spent many months there over the years and have come to really enjoy the people, the culture, and the beauty of the PI, not as the young sailor I used to be, but still enjoy the relaxed and more free life there. I am intending to start for the Philippines by this time next year - sailing to Hawaii, then on to the PI to retire.

Great video set on Cambodia. I watched them all. I loved your little talk on non-attachment. That is something that I have been trying to teach others here in America and unfortunately no one ever seems to truly get it. That is why I have decided to finally make that move to SEA in the near future, to be with others that have the same beliefs that I share. Thanks again.

Great Vid again. thanks. Remember the target market for snooky is primarily back packers as you would have noticed. That really explains the constant music and each bars attempt to attract the younger crowds who "party and drink heavier" than more mature travellers.

I'm trying to watch all your videos. I have been to Thailand 2x and fell in love. Do you have any videos or opinions on Vietnam or Laos? I plan on retiring in 11 years. Seems like a long time. But I will be 67 then with a small ss check. Hopefully I can save a few thousand before I retire to supplement my ss. I will become a member closer to retirement. Thanks for all the hard work you put in to these videos. I know it's not all fun and games.

Air Asia is the airline. Although they are terrible, they are usually on time. I would still suggest Bangkok Airways or Thai Airways if you are travelling within Thailand (or Cambodia for this case). The 300-500 baht difference can be made up easily if you consider the cost of comfort, the price of water or the cost of the taxi to the main airport.
@keninchicago

Air Asia is not my favorite airline within Thailand and Asia and IF Bangkok or Thai are competitive - I fly them. HOWEVER, TG and PG are often twice or 3 times more expensive than Air Asia... for that price, I will choose Air Asia over others.

I can understand why JC not liked 'snooky' as a retirement place. There are a lot of young people as backpackers there. Specialy around the beaches. Thats why they play the music all the time in the bars. I went there also several times. The most famous bar is the dolphin shack bar witch is opened to the last and very croudy. Also in low season what expat bar owners called als NO-season. Pitty JC not went look downtown. I think thats more suitable for retire people.

Hi JC, another great job. I think I've flown with the same airline and years ago it was fine. Now with all the add on's it's not so great. I asked for a cup of coffee during a flt to Ubon and if I remember correctly it was close the cost of premium coffee. I've heard that NOK is better but have never flown with them so I can't say for certain. I see that in Cambodia they play the same dice game as in Thailand. I'm not so good with that game or connect 4 but dominos I've done well. Thanks

I keep an eye on the piracy reports on noonsite.com, the Philippines haven't been a problem for yachts in a while. There is the occasional commercial vessel that gets boarded and the crew robbed - but even most of that is in Indonesia and Malaysia. Robbery is a problem, as in any country with poverty, but it is usually controllable by using good sense and good locks. The northern parts of the Philippines are also safer than the southern islands.

I enjoy your videos very much and am now leaning toward moving to Cambodia? I have been searching, looking and gathering information and have two major concerns? #1 It seems that almost the entire country floods during the rainy season? Do you have any "boots on the ground" perspective/information regarding the flooding?#2 Also, while doing my research I discovered a little critter known as the Bot Fly ... They are said to be alive and well in Cambodia; what say you? Do you know of anyone that has had any experience/encounters with them?
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+Drycreekchickasaw I would't worry about either. Not many places have standing water for long even if a torrential downpour occurs. Your chances of getting bit by the Bot Fly . It is so rare in Cambodia if you look it up on Wikipedia they don't even mention the country as a place that has them. If by remote chance you do get affected the easiest and most effective way to remove botfly larvae is to apply petroleum jelly over the location, which prevents air from reaching the larva, suffocating it. It can then be removed with tweezers safely after a day. White glue mixed with pyrethrin or other safe insecticides and applied to the spot of swelling on the scalp will kill the larvae within hours, as they must keep an air hole open and so will chew through the dried glue to do this, consuming the insecticide in the process.

I understand and that is why I live where people don't sweat the small stuff and worry about PC. Here in Thailand we have Chinese, Koreans, Lao, Vietnamese, Cambodians etc. So I guess before addressing them we need to ask them what country they are from so they don't get offended? This in my opinion is a Western mentality. I don't care really if they call me white, Farang, Caucasian or anything else that makes their life simpler. I apologize if I have offended someone though.

Love your videos JC how overall would you rate Cambodia? The reason I ask is as much as I would love to live forever in Thailand and I am over 50 I have a problem that I think will prevent me from getting a type OA retirement visa.....I have a class B Felony in my past that Oregon State will not let me expunge.....ever :-( the money requirement I could save for. Besides if I lived long term in Cambodia it wouldn’t be to hard to visit Thailand when I ever I want......Right? Thanks JC.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 7 лет назад
All correct. Poverty is more of an issue in Cambodia and where there is poverty there is more crime. Crime against foreigners has increased over the last couple years in Cambodia so I have now put Vietnam higher on my list. But Cambodia is easier to stay long term.

Actually crime against foreigners in Cambodia has exploded over the last few years and because my demographics are people getting up in age and wanting to live out their "golden years" in peace I have moved Cambodia down on my list as places to retire to and replaced it with Vietnam. That is why I done the series on Vietnam and will return there again to do more videos. If Cambodia can ever straighten out their challenges I will return their and do more videos.

Not ALL Ochheuteal bars are owned by foreigners. Only 5 of the 26 bars from the pier to the beach park are foreign-owned - some have western staff, but are still Khmer-owned... the Khmer places are the worst offenders playing loud dance music all day. Ochheuteal is the party beach. If people want a quiet place, there are Independence, Otres and Victory beaches for quiet beach ambiance - Ochheuteal is for dining, drinking and socializing, being the most central beach to the tourist areas.

An important thing nowadays is good access to the internet, unless you have choosen to live without it and all other modern facilities. I would like to live without the modern facilites in a periode every year. What is the most important to all of us? Thats the contact to another human being, cause you need touch from a girl/woman if you are a man and from a man if you are a girl/woman. Many people dont have the human contact on daily basis and thats one of the societys biggest problems.

@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 7 лет назад
Actually Billy the requirements for a one-year extension based on retirement in Thailand hasn't changed in over 20 years. But I understand some people have that perception. When I started making these videos about Cambodia the country was second on my list of places to retire to in Southeast Asia. But over the past couple years crime against foreigners is exploded and combined with the poverty it has created an environment that isn't as pleasing as it once was for a RIPper) retiree in paradise. So now I have Vietnam as number two on my list of places to retire to in Southeast Asia. And who knows, maybe one day it will become number one.
@billytheweasel
@billytheweasel 7 лет назад
retirecheapjc You're as helpful as you are genuinely decent in your vids. Thanks. I use Numbeo to compare costs; city v. city; www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Cambodia&country2=Thailand&city1=Siem+Reap&city2=Bangkok I don't drink alcohol, so the cheaper beer in Siem Reap vs. Bangkok doesn't matter to me. Other than that, Siem Reap seemed pretty affordable. Siem Reap seemed pretty crime-free when we were there last - late 2015. Numbeo Crime Comparison for Siem Reap vs. PP says Siem Reap is safer. Bangkok and Siem Reap are pretty close and I have always felt safe in Bangkok. I've never had trouble anywhere in Thailand -since the early 90's.
