Originally named Nashi, the patrol ship JDS Wakaba had an interesting life. A short career as a destroyer of the IJN, before being sunk towards the end of WW2. She would be salvaged in 1954, and promptly repaired and refit for renewed service.
In the process becoming the one and only IJN warship to serve in the Maritime Self Defense Force.

9 years soaked in salt water and salvageable for use! WOW!

Seems the best argument for why the Japanese opted to reclaim this old wreck rather than take a relatively new ship from the USA was because they wanted something faster than a destroyer-escort, but smaller than the fleet destroyers the USA had available, and the Nashi just happened, as a Tachibana, to fit the bill.

Or perhaps nostalgia for what they dreamed about…

This report was great. At least this ship was not forgotten.

But did it survive against Shin Godzilla?

I wonder if Nashi/Wakaba had the same luck as U-2540/Wilhelm Bauer in that the shallow water meant a combination of mud from the outside and spilled fuel oil on the inside acted basically as a preservative for most machinery

Fun(?) fact. IJS ships names on hulls read right to left as in pre-WW2 Japanese writing. “Wakaba” reads left to right as in postwar, westernized convention. The 3 “letters” are syllables: wa-ka-ba.

Hatszakura is the most photographed of this class because she carried the japanese delegation to USS Missouri at the signing of the surrender

Sort of a shame she wasn’t kept on as a museum ship, though her war record was unremarkable.

some of our best museumships had unremarkable carreers- I'm looking at USS Alabama here- excellent museum, not much of a service history in WWII

Funny I was just speaking to someone about this ship two days back & bam here's a video, Thanks Skynea History for this & thank insomnia for keeping me up this long... Hm I didn't realise the dual 3"/50 Mk. 22 cannons were fitted only to the stern, I must have read the specifications incorrectly.

The Bundesmarine had more Kriegsmarine ships though of a lower class: 9 steam minesweepers of the 35 and 43 types, two dozen R-Boats, a few S-Boats and 3 U-Boats, of which U Wilhelm Bauer ex 2541, S-130 and probably one or two of the R-Boats still exist. The Volksmarine had a few R-Boats and there's a WW1 era small danish minelayer still being used as a clubhouse in a Marina that was captured from the Danish Navy in WW2 and never returned

Think you could do a video in the future about the Kure naval raids in 1945?

Wait, those Quad torpedo tubes and gun are from her? I have just been to Etajima naval academy and saw those a few days ago and forgot to take a picture, too focused on 16 inches turret next to them 😂

A minor point here: IJN Nagato was not sunken at her mooring at the end of ww2, she was in very poor shape, but she survived until the Crossroads tests.

I actually got Wakaba in Azur Lane yesterday. So it was very surprising/ironic when I saw you upload a video about her just a day later. - Also really good video.

Hardly worthy of being named a destroyer, more a corvette or even PT. 🇬🇧

OK I’m pedantic. Japanese single vowels are pronounced “a” = ah, “i” = ee, “u” = oo, “e” = eh, “o” = oh. Listed in Japanaese syllabary order. (Yes, pedantic & pretentious.)

I think we can just claim the privilege of Gaijin to not get Japanese correct cuz we are mere barbarians. :)

I know the Japanese needed to make the most out of their limited resources, and that they're not the only ones to do this, but it's kind of silly that they keep recovering and reconstructing sunken ships like this.

Last, I promise. ¥345,000,000 @¥360/US$ = $958,333.33. I’m guessing this is a bargain in postwar Japan.
