More than 40 years later, this is still the album I use to test any new headphones. I don't know of any better album to be listened to with headphones! Not even Pink Floyd or Kraftwerk made anything like it.
As we have the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, and the king of pop, Michael Jackson, now we have the king of synth, Jean Michel Jarre. He was the pioneer of electronic music and 35 years later his music is still as enthralling as ever. GOT TO LOVE THIS GUY!
You are right, those years we were in a diferent world, no mobile phones, no internet, but still so, we were linked for this kind o music. And in this days, it seems like if Jean Michel were recorded this song a few hours ago. IS TIMELESS MUSIC. I´m from México City and I hope to hear from you again my friend, my name is Eduardo and I was so glad to posted this lines......
MyMauveSky I love Revolutions (1988), Waiting for Coasteau (1990) & Chronologie (1993). After Oxygene 7-13 he did awesome albums too. Geometry of Love (2003), Sessions 2000 (2002), Metamorphoses (2000) Oxygene 3 (2016) & Electronica 1 & 2
I love almost all of Jean Michelle Jarre's tracks...for me it doesn't conjure images of space it actually makes me feel calm...thanks for posting one of his most brilliant one's up! x
+MegaBojan1993 For me, It's at 4.40. stripped back for 2 repeats, and the realisation that a brilliant intro section is coming to an end. Always loved this album and have played the first 6 minutes or so for what seems an endless amount of times
Such a perfect album. I remember listening to this when I went to china in 2010. Travelled by night in a sleeping car, and this album turned out to be the perfect backdrop. Wow.
I went to Tenerife in the beginning of April. On the way back From Puerto De La Cruz to the south airport we got on to this Bono bus ( public transport ) and the driver was blasting all of the best Jean Michelle I couldn't believe my ears. I was sitting-dancing. People thought I was taking a piss but I was browsing the Jean Michelle's universe. What a surprise !!!!
Aaaaaaahh herligt. Great greatings from Denmark Jimbo 👍
Too bad english-speaking people miss the pun in the french title : The word "champs" (fields) is voluntarily misspelled "chants", which sounds the same but means "singing" or "vocals", so the french name can mean both "magnetic fields" and "magnetic singing".
Thanks for this precision. And more than a joke, title contains a wider meaning : it had to do with a musical context in the era when the song was made. Magnétiques : magnetic means attract or repel even for persons or subjects, here this new electronic song. And more, it relates to magnetic 'tape loops' Jarre was familiar with, for carrying out his songs. Chants : some parts of 'Chants Magnétiques' album songs seem to be 'sung' due to synthesizers configuration. So the new listeners in those times had to adhere to or had to went away from this 'new' type of electronic music. This was the meaning I remember about this 'Magnetic Singings' album. But the official explanation seems to be it relates to André Beton surrealism. Perhaps IMHO 'Champs Magnétiques' written with the 'écriture automatique' techniques (automatic writing technique).
Have been a JMJ fan since the late 80s. Traveled all over the US back then in my Ford F150, trialing my Germanbred Doberman in schutzhund. JMJ's music gave me courage and drive.
Bought this album after a single viewing of the commercial on TV...couple of dudes dressed in blue and red geometric-shape outfits, jumping around a large compass dial on the floor. A single view of that commercial, and I went right out and purchased the album.
same happened to me, I became friend with guy I used to work, he kept on playing all the early not commercial stuff while driving and I had no choice so I had to listen. And it changed all my life !!!
I´ve listened this song on first time in September 1996. I remember I was 11 years old and I can´t forget the moment. It´s magic. Today my heart beats so fast like the first time I heared. ..
There is still a lot of stuff from analog synthesizers such as EMS VCS3, ARP 2500 or 2600 or Oberheim OBx i think. Digital Fairlight CMI plays a great role on ambient fragments of this superb album.
English speaking people should know there is a pun in the title of the record : "Les Chants Magnétiques", when you hear it, means "Magnetic Fields" but when you see it written, it means "Magnetic Songs" or "Magnetic Chants"... ;-)
Oh never heard of Jean Pierre Decerf until you mentioned it. How nice that "we met here" Tangerine Dream was the music on what I fell asleep and woke up sometimes.
For me his 1st three albums were the best. LCM1 is 18 minutes of pure listening pleasure ... and when it fades out with the Fairlight sax ... yo know it's time to move the stylus back to the beginning again!
+Neil Vance I've always had the impression he really *tried* with Zoolook, and then when it didn't sell he coasted from that point onwards. But e.g. the title track of Waiting for Cousteau is sublime, so he didn't lose it completely.
I first listened to Magnetic Fields in 1986, in the night after Challenger exploded. I imagined the 7 astronauts among the stars, free from any pain, somehow passed into another dimension. Funny how you always remember the first feelings you have when you listen to something so grandious like this... Listening to MF now my mind went again to the lost 7... back then in '86.
i like that bit of production at around 705 that just sways in with different effects and eventually swishes , and then just chops straight into the next segment at 11.39
To juz tak bedzie z 20 lat jak to slyszalem na Radio2 pierwszy raz - It's about 20 years from the time I heard the Fields for the time - Mr. Tesla and CERN is on my mind when I listen to it.
