It's hard to find any version of this song sung in any sort of serious tone, mostly it's just sloppily made kids videos to get views. It's such a nice song when sung seriously.

What are you talking about? The song is originally a French nursing rhyme. It was intended for children. You're not going to find very many "serious ones" and every variant of the nursery rhyme I've come across has been great, not sloppy. It sounds like that criticism stems from your frustration, not from any in-depth analysis and critical thinking about the song.

@@AES-256-CBC A lot of the recorded versions just aren't very good quality. And this is usually the case with children's songs. A lot of the music on "RU-vid kids" is just cheap sounding. Just because it's a children's song doesn't mean it can't be performed professionally. Sure, children are probably amused by those cheap arrangements too, probably because they don't know any better. But just because your audience doesn't have the ability to critique your work, doesn't mean you shouldn't put any effort into the arrangements and performance. Something being "for kids" doesn't mean it has to be overly simplified, low quality stuff. And this is why this particular version is so nice. It doesn't sound like it was made for kids - it sounds like it's "appropriate" for everyone. Kids still recognize the song, so they will like it. But grown-ups can also appreciate the performance, and they don't need to feel "ashamed" for listening to something that was meant for kids. Also, you may be misunderstanding OP's point - they were actually praising this performance, because a lot of other performances of this song just sound bad.

Could not agree more. We learned this at school and it was never treated as a lullaby, rather as a part of teaching french chansons to the class. We sang it in different groups with each group starting at different instances, just like in this song. We loved it when our teacher taught us this song.

You are right, but the fact is that all little english, american child sings today Are you sleeping ? A are you sleeping ? Brother John !!! (so "Jean" in french, but NOT "brother Jacob") THIS IS AN INDISPUTABLE FACT !!! So you are wrong at the same time. The reason seems rather simple... this is in order to comply with the metres in the line. The metres being the number of feet in the line In the original version Frères Jacques, Frères Jacques... (8 feet) Levez vous ! Levez vous ! (6 feet) In the transposed english version Are you sleeping ? Are you sleeping ? (8 feet) Brother John ! Brother John ! (6 feet) [ "Brother Jacob ! Brother Jacob !" ] would" not match the melody as this would be 8 feet and not 6 Also note that in english version the lines are inverted, we can guess that it still to comply with metres The german version is closer to the french version because it is more easy to comply with the metres Bruder Jackob ! bruder Jakob ! (8 feets) Schläfst du noch ? Schläfst du noch ? (6 feet) In some other international transpositions, "frère" (brother) become "père" 'father' Translation is not something easy when it comes with song and music, So one should no speak of "translation", but of "transposition" NB : In the original french version, as sung here, the second line is : "Levez-vous !" (Stand up !) and not "Dormez-vous ?" (Are you sleeping ?) as in most other international translations But today, all little french will sing "Dormez-vous ?" First possible explanation : this canon crossed the Channel and gain popularity firslty in England (and not in France), and it came back in France with a modified text. Second possible explanation : this canon became later a nursery rhyme, but one must not forget that at the begining this was not the case. This was a simple game, a kind of singing challenge between composers in some taverns. Becoming a nursery rhyme "Dormez-vous ?" makes more sense as words sound "softer" for a baby. The mother carefully wakes up her child and unconsciously modifies the text to say the same thing but in a smarter way. So we can also expect that "Levez-vous !" became 'Dormez-vous ?" at the time this canon became a nursery rhyme. For many time, nobody knew the origin of this canon. We knew it came from France, but we had no idea on who was the composer. This is just in the 10 last years that a musicologist discovered it was written by Rameau, (this hard assumption is based on a document from Francoeur, a violionist/composer who lived in Paris at the same time as Rameau) probably in some parisian tavern, as a funny challenge with some musician friends . This is important to note that at the begining this was not a nursery rhyme. This video intends to show what could have been the original singing way

@@fidelio3841 ok, ok, man. I've just never heard the English version. I actually thought it starts with "Brother Jackob, Brother Jackob," because that would fit. Anyways, it's a great song and the video shows a beautiful rendition of it
