Jean Sibelius - Finlandia

Finlandia, Op. 26 is a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The first version was written in 1899, and it was revised in 1900. The piece was composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire, as the last of seven pieces, each performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history.
The premiere was on 2 July 1900 in Helsinki with the Helsinki Philharmonic Society conducted by Robert Kajanus. A typical performance takes anywhere from 7½ to 9 minutes.
A recurrent joke within Finland at this time was the renaming of Finlandia at various musical concerts so as to avoid Russian censorship. Titles under which the piece masqueraded were numerous, a famously flippant example being Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring.
Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people. But towards the end, a calm comes over the orchestra, and the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn is heard. Often incorrectly cited as a traditional folk melody, the Hymn section is of Sibelius's own creation.
Although initially composed for orchestra, in 1900 Sibelius arranged the entire work for solo piano.
Sibelius later reworked the Finlandia Hymn into a stand-alone piece. This hymn, with words written in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, is one of the most important national songs of Finland (though Maamme is the national anthem). With different words, it is also sung as a Christian hymn (Be Still, My Soul), and was the national anthem of the short-lived African state of Biafra (Land of the Rising Sun).

I grew up amid the lakes and forests of Northern Ontario, in Canada. The landscape there is identical to that of Finland. Many Finnish immigrants settled there, mixing with the aboriginal Cree and Ojibway people. I remember a Cree elder who told me that he couldn't believe that the Finns were Europeans. "They're exactly like us," he said. "They have the sweat hut (= sauna), when they speak it sounds something like our language, they know how to live in the forest, how to hunt, how to walk in the snow, how to tell stories around the campfire in the proper way. They belong here, like we do. It's strange that they look so pale, though." I'm not a Finn, but when I hear Sibelius, he speaks to me like a brother.

@@rookield8077 The landscape of Northern Ontario is precambrian shield rock covered in forest (deciduous grading into coniferous as a you go northward), with thousands of lakes. Small patches of farms scattered in the southern parts, but 95% of the land is forested. This would be very familiar to you, I'm sure. Finns arrived in the late 19th century and were welcomed because they were skilled lumberjacks and they could compete successfully in fistfights with the French Canadian, Ojibway and Irish lumberjacks. After the fistfights were done with, they all intermarried. Just looking at the map of Northern Ontario, I can find Suomi (town), Suomi Lake, Finland (township), Finland's Bay, Finland Creek, Kittila Maki (neighbourhood in Thunder Bay), Rauhala (another neighbourhood in Thunder Bay), Kivikoski (town), Lappe (originally Lappi, but mispelled by the Post Office), Sistonens Corners, Kormak, Makynen (village), Intola Cemetery, Pohjola Cemetery & Tarmola Cemetery (inhabited by dead Finns, I guess), Ella Lake, Emma Lake, Jantti Lake, Karstula Lake, Kusti lake, Lohi Lake, Matti Lake, Pelo Lake, Pistin Lake, Tenho Lake, four different Maki Lakes and three different Maki Rivers. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a name is Finnish or native Cree or Ojibway, because the languages look similar, but those are the ones I'm fairly sure of.
@rookield8077
@rookield8077 3 года назад
@@thompsonmackenzie8957 Many people seem to have named the lakes by their names. All the lakes you said were Finnish names. Also it's funny how "mäki" or as you would call it, maki, used to be the most popular last name in 1800s-1900s. That's why there are so many of them I guess.

Because I'm a finn, I can never listen to this without tears coming into my eyes. The music tells the incredible story of Finland. The hard struggles, the fights, how the tough people of Finland went from being a poor country to rich one through hard work etc of every finn, then becoming a free and modern society. It is difficult to tell with words. One needs to be a finn to really get the depth of this masterpiece. This piece represents Finland from the first notes to the last ones. I love my dearest Finland with all my heart and mind and will without a doubt always protect my country against any possible aggressor. It would be my honor to die for my country.

The piece can ,if we leave out anything "political" about it and just think about the natural romanticism, be seen as the "unofficial anthem of the historical finno-estonian cultural region". :) Which meant : Finland+ Estonia+ Livonia (including a part of today's Latvia) + small parts of northern Sweden + small parts of northern Norway (counties FINNmark with much partial finnish-lappish ancestry and a big finnish migration in the 1800s, and under doubt also Troms- where many of the kveenit / kainulaiset /kvæner and the tshud people migrated into from the late medievals and onwards until the 1700s)

I'm a grown man sitting here on the 6th of December crying more than a few tears listening to this. It's hard to explain. If you're not Finnish, you may think this is a great piece (or not) but for so many of us this might just be the most beatiful piece of music ever written. Not only because of the music itself, but for what it represents to us. Depicting the struggles our people had to experience in the past in order to grow into the blossoming society it is today. Everything about it makes me feel so grateful to have been born and lived in this country. A truly inspiring masterpiece and the only music that has ever had me in tears. Happy independence day everyone.

3:33 the cellos in the background can almost symbolize the low, ominous drone of bombers flying overhead. The dreadful brass makes it so sad. I almost cry playing this in orchestra. I'm a cellist and it almost feels like I'm in a bomber ready to bomb Helsinki. I know the piece was written well before bombers were invented. But its almost foreshadowing.

I was smoking pot at the terrace, so it was silent and peaceful moment... that's the position where I have spotted lot's of animals over the years. Pufff! I've noticed that when I achieve certain type of calmful and silent state of mind, it seems like nature is coming closer. Birds don't take as much distance, same with rabbits.

@Elmo Tuominen I agree...I have travelled all around the world, and I have to say that - irrespective of the music - that skiing trip was one of the most beautiful or most interesting things I have done. It was absoutely stunning. I remember taking a break during the skiing, listening to the very tentative beginning of the violin of the Sibelius violin concerto, and at that moment we spotted two reindeer who were not bothered at all by our presence. It was magical, simply magical.

I was 17 years old, in 1986 I heard Finlandia for the first time in Egypt, with the (I guess) symphonic orchestra, in Cairo. I was visiting my father, who worked there for 3 years. He only listed to classical music and had a great understanding and hearing, so he said the performance was so so... While I listen to many other things as well, I recall these gone moments, being thankful for the introduction to classical music by my late father.

I know and love the tune as this hymn: This Is My Song by Lloyd Stone and Georgia Harkness This is my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for lands afar and mine; this is my home, the country where my heart is; here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine: but other hearts in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine. My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean, and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine; but other lands have sunlight too, and clover, and skies are everywhere as blue as mine: O hear my song, thou God of all the nations, a song of peace for their land and for mine. May truth and freedom come to every nation; may peace abound where strife has raged so long; that each may seek to love and build together, a world united, righting every wrong; a world united in its love for freedom, proclaiming peace together in one song.*

@charlesmartel930 While you may be right in some cases, part of the reason why we broke ourselves out from Russia were the terrible conditions we had under Russian rule. I would perhaps even argue that the hope of better life and restoring proper balance to our society played significant role on our decision of independent Finland. Therefore, it could be said that democracy did play a role in our country's history which invalidates your statement arguing about "never" fighting for democracy.

The shot from space, honing in on the Finnish forests in winter - the best possible introduction to this magnificent music!

Thank you so much for uploading this. One of the most dramatic and may I say, powerful compositions by the great Sibelius, matched only by the Intermezzo from his Karelia Suite. The camerawork in this video is absolutely breathtaking. Much love to Finland and its people, from Scotland.

A large group of Russian soldiers in the border area in 1939 are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a small hill: "One Finnish soldier is better than ten Russian". The Russian commander quickly orders 10 of his best men over the hill where Upon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. The voice once again calls out: "One Finn is better than one hundred Russian." Furious, the Russian commander sends his next best 100 troops over the hill and instantly a huge gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again Silence. The calm Finnish voice calls out again: "One Finn is better than one thousand Russians" The enraged Russian commander musters 1000 fighters and sends them to the other side of the hill. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible battle is fought.... Then Silence. Eventually one badly wounded Russian fighter crawls back over the hill and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men......it's a trap. There's two of them."

Gorgeous! What a hymn of love to one's country. Praise to Sibelius. I heard the final part sung as a hymn at a family funeral titled "Be still my soul." I'm considering it for mine.
