A great performance. How wonderfully without affectation he plays the sublime 2nd movt. So different from so many others, who mistake the exceptional "simplicity" for an invitation to "do something". Bravo, Thibaudet, for letting Ravel be Ravel.

That's without affectation? The guy plays literally like it's a part of him. What you would consider to be with affectation ( like some asian dudes) would be way too much indeed..my point beeing..if you want, you can get way more without affectation..but not as good as this guy. Good man.

Sublissime ! Grand merci !

I have to add more praise for Msr. Thibaudet. I've not heard a better performance of my favorite piano sonata. It's understated, tempos steady and not overwrought, and the clarity of the phrasing and lightness of melodic lines really bring the raw force of the harmony to our core. You can feel the orchestra and conductor completely comfortable and inspired by him. WOW

This concerto always conjures - for me, anyway - First movement: A happy picture of a young couple setting off in a pony cart and having a whale of a time laughing and giggling and playing the fool on their journey, ending in a kiss. Second movement, and I don't want to offend anyone here, but I see that same couple lying on a grassy river bank, making slow, gentle love to each other, lots of romantic hugging and stroking and unbuttoning. Third movement: "Oh my God! Look at the time! We were supposed to be at Aunt Jemima's ten minutes ago!" Picnic stuff grabbed and bundled, a quick slap as Mam'selle gets a last fondle from M'sieur, as they rearrange their clothing in a hurry and pile into the cart, roar off down the lane, round the corner of the post office and come to a sudden stop as Aunt Jemima is waiting outside her front door, tapping her foot, eyes narrowed and arms folded... 🤨

Everything was marvelous until the third movement. The candenza of the 1st mvt is extraordinary, the 2nd mvt is also wonderful with the great solo of cor anglais... But the 3rd mvt is missing so much music, for instance THE MELODY OF THE BEGINNING!! Despite that, it's a beautiful and great interpretation, both the pianist and the orchestra.

Yessss! I was thinking about the same thing! Can’t really hear the melody clearly, and was not sure if it’s intentional or not.
