Owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jeanie Buss, reflects on the challenges of managing a business alongside family members, particularly the unpermitted decision made by her brother to hire Mike D'Antoni over Phil Jackson in 2012. She shares the embarrassment she felt during this time, the subsequent strain on the relationship with her brothers, and the invaluable advice she received from Kobe Bryant that helped her through it all.

At that time, D’Antoni was vehemently against iso players and post up players. Why would ownership even consider bringing him in when Kobe was an iso player, and both Bigs were post up players? It was impossible to make that work with D’Antoni. His coaching forced Kobe to play 40 minutes a night just to keep in contention late in the season, and his Achilles went. Jeannie is the basketball brains in the family, period!

And it was clear from the beginning that his coaching style wouldn't mesh with the team. He was a shoot quick, don't use the shot clock type offensive minded coach. It was the complete opposite of how Kobe and the lakers had operated since his uprising. The triangle involves using the shot clock to some degree.

@@DangleFront seems like it. He seemed so proud of himself to pull the rug out and hire “his” guy, he either didn’t think it through, or just doesn’t understand the game very welll

Im glad she explained that disaster Jim era. She made all the perfect decisions since bouncing her brother. The crazy good and hard decisions they made to dump those bad salaries and quickly make cap space to get LeBron, then AD and immediately win another title was epic. She's a genius. Rob pelenka is a genius. Who knew Westbrook would be a disaster when they signed him. They bounced back from that and made western conference finals and added more talent this summer. She's a true boss.

Jim had NO business being a part of the Lakers decision. He was a horse trainer with NO experience and a huge ego for a person who didn't have a clue what he was doing. I understand Jeanie was trying to respect her dad's wishes but it killed Kobe getting his 6th ring.

right also fact that Jeanie is honest and emotional says it alll. When she showed Kobe book and was talking about crying after those bad times... damm... Also i see now how good chemistry with Lakers is back - Lebron is true heir from Kobe after couple years of lakers being faceless team...

I remember there was a rumor that Jerry Buss had told his son on his deathbed to get Mike DAntoni. Which I always found ridiculous because Jerry was about winning (especially when it mattered most) and Mike was always a regular season coach. That 2012-2013 team was well constructed despite Dwight’s injury and Paus age.

Idk the behind the scenes stuff like Big-timeLaker fans but I know she is head and shoulders above her brother. Her only downfall is LeBron James being involved in trades / Free agency

As a Lakers fan, you can clearly see the decisionmaking process in how Jeanie and Lakers management handle issues. It hasn't always made them popular (supposedly there was support for bringing in Westbrook for the entertainment value of 3 stars supported by Jeanie and her close circle) and countless other issues, but Jeanie gets it right most of the time and especially when it comes to the things that count for the Lakers brand, honoring Kobe, and the entertainment value of selling Lakers basketball.

Kobe would got a 6th ring if Phil came back. Dwight and Pau would of worked with the triangle. Dwight wanted Phil. Phil would of managed Kobe’s minutes

It's funny how she admired Kobe and Kobe gave her advice. The same Kobe that basically admitted he cheated on his wife with that white girl in that hotel. I lived the Kobe era. It's funny to me how a guy that was basically hated by most NBA players, hell even his teammates, he basically pushed Shaq out of LA. The guy really turned his image around and even after he died now everyone loves Kobe and always loved him. Yeah, not so fast. The public really have short memories. When he came out once and said he would just pay off the bimbos, "like shaq does". I mean he was really disliked. This young generation is lead to believe that Kobe was this perfect person, when in reality he was just not a very nice person all the time.

Her brother certainly shouldn’t have been running the show. But the game had passed Phil by at that point and he wasn’t even hungry anymore. Phil wasn’t the answer either.
