In this episode of Photographing USA, we'll visit two hiking trails in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Stout Grove is the first and The Boy Scout Tree Trail is the 2nd. Landscape photography in these locations is hard! I'll also try out a few new editing techniques.

My wife and I were there. In 10/19. Being in Stout Grove was humbling, majestic, moving, and brought tears to my eyes. One sight describes it as having a, “Cathedral Majesty.” That says it well. We didn’t want to leave. We went to several of the Redwood Forests and there was no place like Stout Grove.

Dear Sophie looking like an elf in the immense forest...one of those locations on earth that can only be seen in person to fully understand the grandeur and magic world within...certainly on my list of places to see...there isn’t a lens wide enough to capture the enormity and size of these giants...only the human eye and spirit can carry this scene ....within the person...you are right...probably one of the most magical places EVER...

I feel very gratified in seeing that you went to a Northern California redwood grove. NorCal's woods are still lush and pristine in many parts, and boast the largest/oldest/tallest trees in the world thanks to less tourists. Beautiful and well done video, as always. Oh, and also: if you ever get to NorCal again check out Lassen National Volcanic Park, a smaller national park, and Mossbrae, a waterfall in Dunsmuir.

Have to agree about redwood forests being extremely difficult to photograph. Spent day at Muir Woods and since was restricted to the marked trails, it was near to impossible to get shot that wasn't cluttered front to back.

Thank you and thank you so much for the support! :) In regard to the followers I think there's a few factors that weigh in. It is getting harder and harder to convert people from one platform to another. Even though I publish a picture in a bunch of FB groups which gets like 2000 likes I only got something like 60 new subs from that. That's a conversion rate of 0,05% - which is less than horrible - and don't even get me started on my 25000 Instagram followers :P It's also mostly a no-no to link youtube videos in photography groups on FB, G+ or reddit and I don't know about anywhere else with a massive amount of photographers where you can post videos. I rank pretty good on my tags, but according to my statistics I only get 15% of my traffic from RU-vid searches. Also I don't have a "hero video yet", which is a video that drive all the traffic - like the Iceland video from Thomas Heaton does to his channel. In regard to my next series my Iceland series will have a pause soon. For now I only have content for three more videos and after that I'll start a new one from the Faroe Islands which I visited a couple of weeks ago. Those episodes will be a bit longer than those from Iceland and contain more locations in one episode :)

I have 2: the one you showed first after concluding the first spot (love the framing trees, the leading path to your friend and also the processing which does look a bit different than the style you usually do) and the first image shown after spot 2 (where you made the water glow and darkened the outside a lot). Those are amazing shots!

The redwoods are so incredibly impressive. I only visited the small Muir Woods National Monument near SF but it was already magical. I certainly agree that it's hard to photograph. When I showed pics to some of my friends they would always ask how big those trees are. I think you did an amazing job at capturing the scale. I usually don't like human elements in landscape shots but in a mystic forest environment the "marveled explorer" worked very well imho. Especially the last shot is so damn good. It really saddens me that humans logged almost all of the redwoods that existed. It's such an unbelievable crime to destroy what has been growing for thousands of years in a matter of a few decades just to make some quick bucks.

Fact of the matter is as a RU-vidr you'll have to make an income somehow... for now my main income is from videography. I've not even made 100usd in add revenue yet from all my videos combined. Lovely video. It was a bit lacking in color to what I have seen. Likely due to the overcast skies. To the other viewers, the better time to visit the the Redwoods is the first week in June. That is when the Rhododendrons bloom as well as many other blooms.. It is also the time when there is more soft misty fog. On the way up from San Francisco, you will the Avenue of the Giants. This is a must stop. The difference is that the Avenue is free of underbrush, especially near the town of Pepperwood. The landscape if filled with redwood sorrel/clover and it presents unparalleled beauty. Under the canopy of the redwoods, there is little sound, nothing but peace and serenity.

Consider a fisheye or ultra wide angle. I tend to avoid bracketing in the coast redwoods, and often, a single image with full frame and 20 to 50 megapixel sensor works beautifully for something widely panoramic.

Hi, I've been enjoying your videos so much that I have to say THANKS! Haven't noticed any segments from the New England region of the US, perhaps in the future. I do have a photography question that I've been wondering about. Always thought an aperture of f11-f18 would provide the best depth of field for landscapes, yet I notice you use f1.4-f5.6 at times. Can you enlighten an enthusiast why opening up works and explain your thought process that goes into your choice? Thanks again, Lisa.

Hi Lise, no nothing from New England yet. There's no such thing as a "best depth of field". If you want to understand aperture you have to understand the other exposure factors shutter speed and ISO. When I choose my aperture it depends on the amount of light available and how much depth of field I need. If you have a broad focal range (like 24mm) you can get everything optimally in focus with a relatively open aperture (like 2.8 - 5.6), if you don't have a foreground which is very close to the camera. For sharpness, the sweet spot of the lens is often 5.6-8. If you go above that you start introducing diffraction, but for all practical reasons don't put too much into that. I often shoot at f/22 to get as deep a depth as possible. I hope this answered your question? :)

At 7:42, looking up from under the log to the treetops, it states that it is at 70mm?? I'm confused at how high off the ground that log is. In the video leading up to that it looked much closer to the ground. I would have thought it was a much wider focal length than 70mm?

Thanks :) The short answer is no. BoyScout is by far the most impressive, but if you only have time to Stout it comes highly recommended. It's rather short, but you'll see some impressive trees, My recommendation is to go through the grove and when the trees get smaller turna round and go back the same way instead of going the roundtrip ;)

Amazing photography!! I see you shoot with an aperture of f/2.8 in a few of your photos...how do you get enough depth of field with that and where do you focus? Ex. photo of fallen tree looking up

The wider you shoot the less of a problem DOF becomes :) I just focus on my focal point.

@PowerMisting ...even with a wide angle lens, f/5.6 or f/7.1 are typically much better in the coast redwoods unless trying to isolate a single tree trunk face, burl or plant. But small aperture means shutter 1/2 sec. to 2 sec.. Minimum bokeh yields a better look, and it becomes evident in 20 x 30 prints. Tripod is one of the most critical things.

Trouble I experience is the high contrast when shooting in the redwoods. I live 5 minutes away from redwood forests in California. Having difficulty getting the shots I want without blowing out the image. Thanks.

I’ve never ever seen a human on top the fallen tree. I wish that tree be taken out. The grove was sweeter when almost no one knew where it was. People standing 500 feet from the Lost Monarch didn’t know the tree existed. I didn’t tell them. We used to hide the society trail with branches to keep inquisitors out of the grove. The grove will never be in peace now.
