Great Vid - over the last few years, I got a new radiator then treated myself to an new AC system, thanks for recommending Rock Auto - they have been very helpful with my Jeep!
I upgraded to an aluminum radiator for my V8. I also added a fan shroud, which is really hard to find. Finally I added hood vents and haven't had anymore issues. That is running AC on the trail in July.
I have a saying about Rock Auto and Dorman Products. "They keep old vehicles out of the scrap yard". Great video! Also if you all are interested in the new Harbor Freight ICON brand tools, I have a video about how they are in the stock room...you just need to ask. Keep up the good work!
I need to do the fan clutch in my ZJ, its pretty much just a free spinning fan all the time when it should be engaged its not. I'm going with the HD clutch as well. I put an HD clutch on my 88 Ford Bronco 2, yep it screams going down the road but I never have cooling issues. I actually feel more power loss when the AC compressor clutch engages than I do with the fan clutch engaged. I thought about an e-fan for better airflow when at lower speeds for better AC performance but don't want to hack away at the Jeep just to install a fan that may or may not function properly as you had happen with your's. I'll stick with the mechanical and add the HD fan clutch, which may help the AC performance too being engaged more often.
Wired an Auxiliary switch for the XJ electric fan and just run it 100% during hot weather and for a few minutes after cool down so the radiator doesn't puke. I replace the fans every 3 years or so or if they start looking chewed up, its part of regular(ish) maintenance and the electric and clutch are like $30 a piece and the radiator is like $70. I notice the electric fan has a tendency to get knocked around because its so close to the radiator and held in partially by tabs which shortens their life. by replacing the clutch and e-fan you get more life out of the radiator. Generally I'm not for spending more money on the radiator as they ALL fail eventually from road dirt buildup, debris shooting up the engine and fan, and/or expansion/contraction from the extreme engine operating temp of the 4.0. Its not a bad idea to have a spare radiator, fan clutch, and Efan sitting around the next time you hit the pick-a-part. Keep wrenching!
I notice people are saying they fixed their cooling issues, and then proceed to say I deleted my ac or I don’t run my ac. Well my jeep wouldn’t overheat with the ac off but would when I had it on. I installed a flex a lite 180. I run the ac in 120° lake Havasu weather and it’s helps significantly, still slightly wanting to get hot, I think I’ll add hood leuvers and install an engine oil cooler.
Get you a 3 row 4 row aluminium aviation type welded radiator. For transmission. As well disconnect condensor cooling . pressure may be the issue so electric water pump. Steel hoses with rubber connects at the end.after market fan 18 in. FM ratings. 75 percent coolant mix with 25 . percent water . last n least hood scoop reverse with holes on the hood n a 5in - 8in fan center on outside the hood. And in at hood scoop . use ethanol gas to make up for it in cold days n warm it up at least 15 min. Electric pump adjust n replace temperature sensor if running to cold as well as after market temperature control fan Its cast iron forged parts . cause aluminium breaks explodes n breaks on the power on these straights.
I will agree on a TRAIL RIG run the HD Clutch Fan but on a DAILY I CAN'T STAND THE NOISE OF IT ? My 97 ZJ 4.0 has the regular clutch fan, regular STAT. BUT I CLEAN EVERYTHING OUT WITTH CLR OR VANISH TB. CLEANER EVERY 3 YEARS. STILL HAS ORIGINAL RAD. CLUTCH FAN & HEATER CORE. Might try Electric fan or fans just for the hell of it ? I want to do an AC delete but not sure yet how to do it ? Different belt only ? Replace compressor with an Idler pulley ?
I just did a Shorter belt on my 93... I tried the electric fan route and it wasnt cooling enough... here is the video to the ac delete ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DXLTjG8fttw.html
OMG that's the worst condenser I've ever seen on a running vehicle 🤣. I was planning on putting a ZJ clutch fan on my XJs.. it's a great mod. I didn't realize the ZJs had an OEM dual core towing radiator. That's bad ass. Ill definitely get one when I need to replace it. 👍
with two electric fans there is no problems and if you flush the cooling system out and keep it clean there is no real problem one thing to remember there in not a lot of air flow in the motor bay because of the provisions for four wheel drive i have made the conversion on jeeps for over twenty years for Friends and on mine and had on problems like the video and thought i would share this if you and interested
I tried finding the the towing radiator for my 98 4.0 zj on rockauto but didn't see it. Shower the economy version, standard, and spectra performance? Is it the spectra or do you know the part number so I can look it up? Thanks
