Jeep Cherokee XJ 3" Suspension Lift Install | Part 1 of 2 | Rough Country

In this video I will show you how to replace and upgrade the suspension on your vehicle with a suspension lift from Rough Country. Today we will be installing the rear suspension lift for the first part of this series. This process is very similar to other vehicle models but today I will show you how to do it on a Jeep Cherokee XJ. I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish by removing the old suspension and installing the new. I've had this same lift on my 98 for 5 years. With the n2's the shocks finally went out over the summer . But the rest has lasted built it for a tool hauler for work. Great video ! Rust belt : Maine

A fine video on installation! I had to lower my transfer case to eliminate a vibration following my 3-1/4"(actual) Old Man Emu lift. However, the Australian steel holds up on our California rocky trails which are steep enough to require low range to climb with stock 3.55 gears.

This is a good video. I had a zone 3" lift put on a few years ago and got some 30" yoko geo15 put on and it's been a lot more fun. I'm still needing to replace the front control arms so I'll see how that affects the way it handles.

I used my MAP Gas torch a lot for the leafs. You can heat up the bolts going through the hanger. Trust me you put the flame on the bolt head and get it nice and hot, the heat will make it through the threads. Anybody reading this that will try, your bushing WILL smoke pretty bad in the process. Use common sense please and heat it in intervals. Great video btw 🤝

if you take the rear bumper off, in the slot where the trailer hitch strips go you can see the rear of the shackle bolts. got up there with a map/oxy torch and they came out like butter

Hey! Can i take a leaf out of a rough country 3" lift leaf spring, and use it at stock height? I bought the kit and a bunch of stuff before i learned how awful roughcountry is, as a company and as people.

My problem is my Dana 44 is under slung and I need the brackets to mount it under the springs. That's 4 or 5" lift alone. Dandahermit

Thanks - weighing doing one of these jobs myself. Matt the the rescue tow guy said at one point to remove sway bars. What are the pros and cons of having/removing the sway bars and what happens on the freeway?

With sway bars disconnected while off-road it gives you an advantage of better articulation in your axles. It helps make sure that all the tires are on the ground to get the most amount of traction possible. As as for having them disconnected while driving on the highway, it leads to having body roll and is noticeable on turns.

Is it possible to put leafs in backwards? I noticed the + and - on each side. Just had this kit installed in my XJ and the - was installed on the opposite side you had it installed. Thank you!

It is possible. The larger bushing should always be facing forward.

Excellent video for XJ rear lift kit install. - Parts places, like Quadratec and others, list their rear leaf spring replacements for Cherokee XJ with the description that they are for XJ with 0 to 3" lift kits. Question: So is the same leaf spring used for an XJ with no lift kit as well as one with a 3" lift kit? If so, besides the shocks - what gives the rear it's 3" lift if not the leaf springs too?

They might just be saying that the leaf spring is more HD than stock and can vary in additional lift, depending on how the Jeep is loaded or if it's used for towing. I would stick with lift specific springs that will advertise a specific lift height. Leafs or leaf springs shackle or a combination of both will adjust ride height.

Did mine 2 days ago 2001 Cherrokee xj 60th yr anniversary model. On bottom of shock I put greese on both sides , you only did one ?

I have 5 matching wheels and one hole one rim I had to drill the lug nut off but I hane an exact rim to match....I like ur rims....the 31s are about 60% tread

For the rear yes, the front you could get away with the factory lines but I would recommend longer ones as well.

For the axle u bolts when you torque them, how do you lift up the Jeep if your using jack stands?

The jeep needs to be supported by the frame when installing new leaf springs.

That rig has a lot of rust. My 87 MJ ( metric ton) doesn't t have a spot of rust anywhere cept a spot where some paint got chipped off some light . surface rust.

Comanche suspension is different in the rear compared to the cherokee in the video. Should be very similar expect like you said the axle is mounted over the axle. Front suspension should be exactly the same though.

Don't use anything Rough Country, your wasting your time and money. You'll be replacing everything before the years up. By the way, the sway bars go in the trash, not needed. For that baby lift you should of went OME and been done with it

I plan to display as much lift brands as well as other products and accessories from multiple manufacturers on this channel. I am well aware that there are better brand lifts you can get depending on your needs. And no the front sway bar stays on for this jeep, I am not looking to do any serious offroading with this jeep.
