In this video I give you a good look at my 1988 Jeep Comanche which started life as a two wheel drive truck. It's now been converted to 4x4 with an AW4 automatic transmission, 231 transfer case, slip yoke eliminator, and custom Tom Woods drive shafts. I show you the current state of the interior, exterior, and undercarriage before the restoration starts. Lots of future plans for this rig so stay tuned!

That's sweet. Some guy drove his 89" 2-door xj from California to Missouri. He spent some time living with a high school friend. He wound up getting cancer and dieing. The friend ended up selling me a similarly rust free jeep xj for $1600. Also nickintimes renix monitor is a very valuable tool

There were actually 3 owners involved including myself and surprisingly everyone ended up being happy with the deal haha check out my "tailgate talk" video where I tell the story of how it all went down

I ended up not restoring it and just using it as a ranch rig. It's been doing a great job hauling firewood up the hill, pulling dead trees down, etc. She's always dirty and locked in 4 low with 9 psi in the tires but loves every minute of it haha

Are you maybe willing to bolt up the 35s just to see the clearance with your size lift? Probably would have to bumpstop.

I'm planning to run the 31s for now. I'm deciding if I should stick to leaf springs and go spring over axle for more lift or if I should convert the rear to 4 link coil. Either way, I'll want around 6" of lift or so before I throw 35s on her. Would be awesome if I could run 35s with stockish looking fenders/flares.

@@ryan.vision gotcha. I just meant to see what it looked like with the lift you have and then take them back off again. My wife has a 2 door XJ that we are putting a 3.5” long arm kit on with 35” tires. Going to cut the fenders and bumpstop like crazy for a ton of droop.

Great little truck that is very capable. I owned an 88 Comanche Chief with a tool box and a lumber rack on it. I ended up selling as it started rusting under the pedals and the firewall pretty bad. Additionally the motor was losing compression and I unfortunately did not have funds to rebuild.I had so many great memories in that truck with over 10 years driving around Hawaii. Nice ride you got there, take care of it and it will do the same for you.

Almost wrecked it the other day when the track bar mount broke while I was going 70+ mph on the highway!! Luckily other drives made room for me and I managed to maintain control until I got into the dirt next to an offramp. Scary ride but she's fine just had to tow her home so I can replace the mount.

I have a 91 XJ limited (167,000 miles) that needs some TLC. The paint is faded and clear coat is peeling off... The frame is solid other that the rear frame being pushed in and up alittle. Needs pulled out. On the driver side the rear quarter panel has a small rust hole right below the window. The rockers on both sides have some rust. Not to bad. The inner rockers are solid. The fire wall right above where the Brake booster sits has alittle rust which causes when it rains water to drip in on the floor from the cow. I did cut out and weld in all new floor pans. I Monstalined the floor pans. Had to redo the brake system because in had ABS which failed. It now has non abs. Works great. The Trans has a small issue where when im in 3rd gear it drops down to 1200 RPMs and kind of bogs down and does not want to rev up unless i really step on it. Maybe a bad solenoid? The trans works fine when i switch it into power comfort. The 4.0 does have a lifter tick issue only in extreme heat. On cold start ups it does not tick. So i may just replace the lifters. The engine runs great. Burns little oil (1/4 quart). Leaks more than it burns. Maybe half a quart. Down 1 quart on 3500 mile oil changes. Needs all new suspension its at least 20 years old or original. I think that's it so all that being said would i be crazy to want to restore it?

Me personally, when I'm dealing with a unibody and start talking about things like rust, bent un, etc., I would probably move on but it sounds like you know what you're doing and if you have the resources to fix it and care about the vehicle might be best to stick with it. If you do decide to start a new 4 door project, I would suggest that you check out a ZJ. V8 engine options if you want it, more room, more solid feeling, coil suspension in the rear, and you can find them pretty cheap. I miss my ZJ a lot though so I'm kind of biased toward ZJ haha Follow your heart!!!

Keep the slider. Pull up the carpets far enough to check everything underneath if you can. I swore my xj had no rust and when I pulled the carpet on a tranny rebuild I found some rust on the passenger side trans tunnel. Was from water getting in slowly through firewall and then sitting in its previous life. Wasn't expecting to weld in flooring but glad I checked. Will turn out to be wicked manche.

Ended up keeping the slider and lucked out on no rust. Haven't changed much since this video and she's doing awesome as a ranch truck. Hauls a lot of pine and oak logs, brush, etc. Tires are always dirty and she's always locked in 4lo, just like the Jeep Gods intended!

Picked up a cheap manche that the guy was gonna use for parts. The passenger floor had already been patched but the driver you can do the Fred Flintstone. Got a shaped floor pan from some classic car company in Detroit, but my harbor freight flux core doesnt have enough beans to weld it in..

Front axle is 3.55 gears, I took it off my old XJ. I broke the 2 part shaft for the CaD which is why it has a one piece shaft on the long side now haha
