Hey guys, we erroneously mentioned at 4:46 that the Defender has a Johnson lift rod kit, when in fact it has a Lucky8 Off-Road Equipment kit (shown here: lucky8llc.com/collections/defender-2/products/2in-proud-rhino-lift-rods). We apologize for the error!

I’ve been to many off-road parks and trails. It’s really hard to capture on camera how difficult a trail is compared to how it looks in real life. Great job! We have filmed a very difficult section a few times and when rewatching the footage remarked on how the camera doesn’t do it justice.

That stock Defender with open diffs and just a set of better tires was actually quite impressive. If the electronics and air suspension hold up, one of those with the rear locker and maybe a bit more rubber would be just about as capable as most people would ever need. Plus, and I say this having driven both, it’s way, way more comfortable than the old Defenders and rides better than my Land Cruiser. It seems like a lot of people want to hate it, but I’m really quite impressed with what they’ve accomplished.

As an LR4 (which is basically what the new Defender is replacing) owner with Nitto Ridge Grapplers with the rear locker and low range (HD package) I’ve been telling people the same thing from personal experience. You don’t need 37s and solid front and rear axles and front lockers for 97% of what people who actually go offroading with these do. And why? Cause it’s also our daily, so there’s only so hardcore anyone is gonna do with their daily.

Honestly, my issue is that I loved my series 1 Discovery with a manual transmission (offroad, anyway), but had so many problems with 2 different Discovery 2s that I’ve been a bit nervous about getting another Land Rover. We have a Wrangler, which has had issues as well. I’m thinking of this more as an alternative to the Land Cruiser - which I specifically got because the rep is that it will run forever. @@TroyPosey No doubt the driver makes a difference but I think these guys are just too worried about resale. They seem to buy a rig, use it for a year or two to generate videos with whatever is popular at the time and then sell it. I guess they will do the same with the Gladiator so they're probably not ever really going to beat on it too hard. But a good driver also knows the limits of both his vehicle and what he's willing to risk and chooses his line appropriately. Perhaps for the video they were willing to play a little but in real life he should of just taken an easier line and moved on.

The Defender2 is a capable moderate off-roader. It can handle something like this trail, yes. But it's never going to be a hardcore wheeler on independent suspension. It simply lacks the needed articulation and can't be lifted enough for proper tires. I suppose you could design a subframe drop, longer control arms and half shafts, etc, but that's a small fortune compared to lifting a solid axle truck. I'm a Rover guy, but that's just the way it is.

@@chaquisa1 I know - I have one. OK, mine is only on 34s at the moment but it has completed the full Rubicon. And guess what - it's still not a 'hard core' wheeler and never will be. Aside from the suspension issues, you have the massive weight and the fact that nobody makes aftermarket gearing for it which really cripples it when crawling. Power is nearly irrelevant for anything other than sand or mud, but gearing is critical. The stock Rover doesn't have a great craw ratio to begin with and going to bigger heavier tires only makes it worse. They're good for what they are, but that's really for moderate wheeling and overlanding.

This is why long wheelbases suck for off-roading...
@JM-nz8gw
@JM-nz8gw 4 года назад
@CHELSKI9 why go through all the trouble though? The 4-door or 2-door Wrangler Rubicon has better dimensions and is an ultimate off-road machine stock. A Gladiator is way more expensive stock and then adding more could easily end up in the $100k range.

The defender goes up the trail like my totally independent suspension truck does. It just kind of finds it own way whereas solid axle trucks seem to be able to pick their way across any terrain. The solid axles definitely make for better videos and are prettier, but my totally IFS/IRS truck hasn't ever let me down.

Sorry, no. A solid axle is still the unquestioned superior design for any sort of technical driving. IFS is great for the street and good for going fast off-road, but you can't build a production IFS with the needed travel, nor does it lend itself to easy mods.

@WW-wf8tu 4 года назад
That would have just proved it could have done it. They did not want that on film. ;) IF the 4Runner was a TRD, it would have walked over the same obstacles like the Defender did. The Gladiator would have been fine with its old school tech. if the spotters would have told Tommy to drive it, instead of walking it. Front and rear lockers with lift kits and good tires do nothing if the spotters high center you. ;)

Sorry guys! This is my wife’s daily driver and it has factory TRD boards that would not have cleared the second large boulder without damage. As you can imagine, I didn’t want to have that conversation🤣. The New Defender and the 4Runner wheel almost identically on trail with 2” lift and 33’s on both. Besides, we have plenty of other rigs to wheel in the big rocks...

Per Land Rover, Defender is equipped with an “Active Rear Locking Differential”. It is not switchable, it is automatically switched on and works with other vehicle terrain response system. (Source: Page 16 of the defender order guide - your dealer should have this info)
@donhappel9566
@donhappel9566 4 года назад
A rear locker is available yes, but has not yet shipped. And like all late model Rovers, you will have no control over it. You have to just hope the computer decides to engage it. Very frustrating when you know you want to lock up BEFORE an obstacle and instead have to wait until the tires are already spinning.

@peopleschamp7258
@peopleschamp7258 4 года назад
@@donhappel9566 One thing to remember is that in the new defender, you can determine how much wheel spin you want before the system engages the locker. Steve Burke has stated that he prefers wheelspin before it locks up. You can see his own RU-vid channel where he discusses the spin. You can also adjust throttle response and steering.
@donhappel9566

I guess it's impressive that the new one made it through that, I don't think a Jeep Renegade would have done it, and I was hoping to see the 4Runner struggle to do it. However it didn't do it very cleanly, it tore the heck out of the trail and it looks like the driver's front tire spent more time in the air than on the ground. While the Gladiator did get hung up, up until the point it turtled it did it very elegantly without spinning a tire. The older Rover also would have cleaned that easy if it didn't have the manual transmission, it seems like the driver had a hard time hitting it smoothly with a stick. Perhaps it's a little undergeared for that size tire and doesn't have a great crawl ratio.

The comparison is unfair! The gladiator is a truck with long wheelbase therefore the breakeover angle is less than the other two suv’s , A 4 door or 2 door Rubicon will obliterate the new ‘Defender’ that said the old real defender is a monster that demands respect.

New Defender looked a bit clunky and jarring with that tech needing a lot of wheel spin to work. It didn’t look much different from the LR 3/4’s in that way. The NAS 90 was smoother but the driver looked more experienced but the short wheel base definitely made it more nimble. The Gladiator’s length hampered it a bit.

The newer Defender looked as if it had limited slip diffs. Maybe no lockers, but just as you say "now is when you need the locker", the front wheel which was in the air stopped spinning and the Defender moved forward. So it looks like it has limited slip.

The old (and much modified) Defender used brawn to overcome what the new Defender should have been able to do with brains. Not quite enough brains to manage that stretch with ease, in my opinion, but a good effort for a stock vehicle. Gladiator just suffered from its long wheelbase; put 36” tyres on it and 3” lift, and it would’ve gone up fine.

The Wrangler Rubicon would eat the Defender alive on the rocks, stock for stock. You can also never put 40's on the Defender, so both being built, there's no comparison in hardcore offroading. The downside, the Defender is far superior in ride and comfort if your using it for your daily, which most do. Pick your poison! Cant wait for the new Bronco with the Sasquatch package. What a great time in automotive history, so many options!
