One last DIY home repair left on the Jeep for now. In this video I change the high pressure power steering hose on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 4x4. It is a pretty easy driveway fix! -Enjoy!

Probably the most easiest maintenance repair on a Jeep. Like most my air box had no bolts holding it down, no big deal. I would say 20 minutes max and job done. Video is right on the money.

I got a 97 Taurus with low miles from a relative. He got it used and he always complained about the steering. I complained as well the steering felt over boosted. I had topped it up with power steering fluid. Even changed the power steering fluid. The steering didn't feel normal until I took the time to look up what fluid goes in there and it was Mercon iv. Did a flush and filled it actually with V and it's night and day. Instead of over boosted it felt normal with light assist.

Man, you did a fabulous job. That was my exact problem; high hose leak. I need to purchase a 5/8-inch wrench. Now, the dealership will not get hundreds of dollars to perform a 15-30 minute (for me) job. I did subscribe. Thank you.

Eric, i did this same job a while ago for my cousin on his 95 cherokee. While watching this, i found myself saying to the screen, like an idiot, its 18mm at the steering gear. Lol. Thanks for bringing us along.

Eric, great video, If you replace a line that is ridgid (no flexible hose) make sure you don't fully tighten one side before starting the other, cause if you do you'll have to walk away and come back quite often!

The AMC designed Jeep 4.0L six with its 7 main bearings + crank girdle is one of the 3 best American gasoline inline sixes ever made; along with the "industrial" low RPM torque-monster Ford 300 and then the Mopar SLANT6 170/198/225 engines that uses 426 HEMI main bearings (thank you Willem Weertman).

I had recently replaced the Rad on my 97' 4.0 at 11pm here in god's country of Michigan in the early stages of a snow storm. Truck full of tools and some dealt 18.v power tools, took 30 minutes. Love the fact you have the knowledge, best tools in the box E.O! Go bless you and your family

The owners manual for my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (aka WJ) says specifically NOT to put ATF in the power steering. Implies it will damage rubber things (like hoses and o-rings).

Man, I just found out that the leak was not a recently replaced power steering motor. It was the same hose you changed. Thanks for illustrating how to replace that hose on my 04 Jeep 4.0 6 cyl.

I remember doing this job on an older Dodge Truck. Dealership I used to work for (for a few weeks. LOL) Promoted the dingbat from the wash bay over to a service advisor. He told a customer "Need a pressure hose, yours is leaking." I of course verified the complaint, and the pressure hose is 100% fine. Rusty yes... (it was in the Elmira, NY area....Salty roads) But dry as a popcorn fart. I let him know that wasn't the leak, and by tampering with it we risked tagging the return line. Should leave well enough alone and just replace the leaky 0-ring at the pump. He goes off on me and orders me to change the entire line. And of course the other line starts leaking... So he gets even more pissed..... Moral of the story: Never promote the snot nosed/faced asshat that washes the muck off the cars and trucks to a service writer position. On my last day (what the hell...their firing my ass anyway) I pointed that out to the service manager. I waiting a bit and the old shop I used to work at in Bath, NY had an opening. So I went back there for a few more years. Ahh Memories.....

I've had a high pressure replacement hose sitting on top of my tool chest for over a year for my 2000 Cherokee ... small leak, only when you hit steering end ... only Chrysler/Damler/benz wold put an metric bolt on top and an ASE on the bottom ... luckily I've been spraying my bolts down for a year with blaster ... lol ... going to do it today along with 4 hole bosch injectors upgrade and a new Omix oil pressure sending unit ... and found my annoying small evap leak yesterday ... right angle boot to manifold was mush ... 250K and it's never seen a paid mechanic, never been towed ... my second cherokke in the last 40 years ... i got 20 years and 300 k out of that 4.0

I've got an '04 4.0 that I bought about 10 years ago and it's just hitting 200k now. Also never seen a mechanic since I bought it. It's in desperate need of a overhaul on every bushing and mount and hasn't had an oil change in probably 2 years aside from the random top off. It's just recently started to idle rough and still has all the original plugs, coils and sensors since I bought it and I would guess since new by the look of them. But in the 120k miles and 10 Years I've owned it, I've replaced the shocks, radiator and thermostat, a u joint, alternator, harmonic balancer, and now the power steering hose. It just runs and doesn't care. I change the oil when I hear the lifters start ticking and i got the lower temp thermostat since I'm in the south and heat soak became an issue. But now I get a check engine light for the engine not being at the correct temperature. Regardless it has run better and burned less oil since the change in thermostat. The 4.0 is a completely cast iron block, head, intake and exhaust manifold. Heat doesn't really effect cast iron like modern vehicles with aluminum blocks or heads, steel exhausts, and even plastic intakes so there isn't a need to get it hot since cast iron doesn't expand when heated to "normal" operating temperatures like the other materials. It's the same size at startup as it is at 300 degrees. The piston's rods and crank though can expand and when something expands against something that dosent, problems occur. It's best to keep these engines as cool as possible and very little wear will occur as a result. I've seen videos on here where they drain the oil and coolant and run the engine for quite awhile until it seizes finally but after it cools down it starts up again. It's a beast of a motor and I wish it received more support from the aftermarket as it can be made to withstand tons of more power because of how strong it is and a few people have modified it to over 800 hp.

I always felt intimidated to attack any high-pressure hoses on my cars. Whether it be power steering or A/C lines because the fitting never seem to spin out. I don't think it was rust but rather the dissimilar metals. I'm glad Eric O. says to just cut the lines off if need be, then use a separate socket to get the rest of the connector out. Most DIYer's are alittle scared to cut the lines because if they still can't get the connector out, then you can't drive the car!! Still a great video!

I bought a Big Larry light. Lasted only a few days before the aluminum cap where the button is wouldn't stay on anymore. The body is thin and the threaded section got smaller from dropping it. Was able to push it out and make it last a few more days longer. I have since got the smaller Larry Trio, which is a single piece (doesn't open to change the battery), and it has lasted me months. Your mileage may vary. My work environment is nasty.

Did one on my 1998 Ford Contour with the V6 in it. Calls for 4.5 hours. Now to find a CD4E automatic transmission for it (need a F83PCA code). Seized up tight.

Since Daimler Chrysler bought in to the Jeep Thing , my opinion that quality is sliding down the basement steps. Brakes last two years, then new pads and backing plates do to cutting gauge of metal. I just like the older 80-90"s stuff.

Wow, that thing is 10x easier to work on than my '94 S10. That, and it has 10x less rust than mine, too. Mine looks like it's been parked in the ocean for every one of it's 24 years of existence. Last time I got it stuck in the mud, it left a 2' section of rocker panel behind, sticking straight up. Another year while plowing, I pole-vaulted the ass-end about 3' in the air on the exhaust, after it rotted off the cat. 😁 I'll tell ya, I've been working without a lift for 28 years - 10 or so of those for pay, and I've about had enough of it. I bet you know why!! 😉

You eliminated the automatic rust-proofing system! Nice DIY style work right there. I'd offer a life hack for your squirrel intrusion problem. Repair the wood where they chewed their way in and douse the crap out of the wood with hot sauce. The hotter the better. Tabasco is what I've used.

You mentioned cutting lines with either a saw or grinder.Metal fragments in p.s. fluid of no concern? Side cutter would be a better choice in my opinion.

Les Bender I agree. I use a chisel and hammer or a chisel in a air hammer so it compresses the pipe before it cuts it off so no dirt or rust gets in.

Bill in Wales Guy In my expirience, whilst out of it when doing brakes on my ranger, you hit the brakes really hard for the first few weeks to burn off the oil and grease. Lots of fun when you run out with greasey hands and the one you're stuck without a cleaner is the rear left.
