Another Stellantis recall of plugin hybrids over fire risk of the Lithium ion batteries. There have been injuries and damage associated with several incidents involving Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Cherokee 4xE plugin hybrids caused by a physical defect of the battery cells.
When will it be realized that Lithium Ion Batteries ARE NOT SAFE when scaled up for vehicle use??

Stella is huge it won't bury them. Recalls have zero enforcement. The manufacturer essentially gets to decide what the recall will be and when they'll do it. Bad actors like always claim there's no parts so that they can age the vehicles out. Some owners can't be tracked down on because they're not the original.
@jimrageLT1
@jimrageLT1 9 дней назад
You're probably right. But they do have a lot of other problems right now with sales and the need to cut a lot of inventory. Stellantis, itself, can probably weather the storm, but that doesn't mean they wont have to take serious action to keep the Chrysler brands afloat and these type of recalls certainly don't help. but, yeah, they'll probably survive.

I came SO CLOSE to buying a Wrangler 4xe a year ago but didn't because of all of the oil issues with the 4xe (not to mention their general unreliable nature) but this is immeasurably worse!!

@@laughingbird The issue with the oil is the aready crappy 2.0 litre engine had oil being diluted by fuel but it's far worse with the 4xe since it runs much less. The system would disable the electric driving capability after only a couple thousand miles and demand an oil change. Look up Jeep 4XE F.O.R.M. for more info.

Form is fuel and oil refresh mode. It's purpose is to protect your car and most hybrids do it for cases where you can be on electric for forever and not use your fuel (refreshes it). There is a question on if it's was too aggressive but it isn't a 'problem'. It's preventing problems.

I am convinced that present day automotive batteries are comparable to what tape cassettes were in personal music players. For quite a while, cassette decks were the "state of the art" as lithium batteries are now. My thought is that we will find a battery chemistry that will obsolete lithium cells.

Hopefully so. At least find something better for EVs if we insist on making those a thing by 2035.

Cars so green they could burst out in a toxic fire at any moment, requires 50 thousand gallons of water to put out and requires a hazmat team to contain the chemicals.
@jimrageLT1

50K gallons? That's a conservative estimate, I think. More 250k lbs of sand to bury the car for a week to make sure it doesn't reignite.

HIT A POTHOLE? It would have to be a HUGE pothole, the battery is inside the passenger cabin (under the back seat) Not much of a chance the pothole is going to dent or damage the battery pack.

@@jimrageLT1 I currently (excuse the pun) own a 2022 4XE, I only level one charge it on a 110vac outlet. I have all night while it is parked outside my house, I would park it in the garage, but my All electric 2018 Smart for two sleeps there. So I am not too worried about the latest recall.

Just wait for an aftermarket manufacturer start making an aftermarket EV battery case One that has a better protection against water intrusion, damage and has better cell conditioning But most of all can be opened so that the modules, cells and circuit boards can be fixed or replaced This will be a 'HUGE'! game changer because it will make battery repair much much cheaper EV batteries are composed of a few circuit boards and dozen or so modules which themselves contain a few hundred single cells and a few circuit boards When an EV battery goes bad it is just a circuit board or module or two Modules or circuit boards can be easily and relatively in expensively replaced When bad modules go bad the problem is usually a circuit board and or a few cells that can be replaced Auto manufacturers always make replacement parts extremely expensive
@jimrageLT1
@jimrageLT1 10 дней назад
Serviceable batteries would be a huge game changer, I agree. I think GMs Ultium batteries are kind of built that way with replaceable modules, at least. But it's not always a mechanical problem when they go bad. When cells can no longer move electrons, they're done, and the whole battery needs to be replaced. There aren't many recyclers because it's a very expensive process, so there's not a lot of money to be made, and no one will do it simply "for the planet". It's simply cheaper to make new batteries....which kinda cancells out the sustainability part of the EV argument, imo.

There's equipment and training needed to work on EV batteries. When some are failing it's likely that others are going to failing soon. Resealing the case is another issue. Whatcha Rich rebuilds to get an idea of what's involved.
