I have never been that big a fan on Chrysler's. The only Chrysler I ever had was a Chrysler Newport and I bought it used. It was about 12 years old when I got it. I always wondered why Chrysler starters were so damned expensive! They always sounded like they're running like a bat out of hell and straining to turn the engine over

What an ending....Eric O is a sadist...no doubt about it. It's almost as if the PCM was firing injectors and the coils presumably, to feed a 10,000 rpm engine! Flaky PCM, or flaky input to the PCM??? Can't wait for part 2.

+Phil Bourgeois Nah. Over the past 20 years I have owned 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees purchased new - 1994, 1999, and 2005. What I notice is that many owners of these vehicles maintain them like a 4 cylinder Honda - almost no maintenance. Then they blame the vehicle when it breaks down. If one keeps up the maintenance and repairs, which is very expensive, these vehicles are dependable and fun to drive.

MAN... ive been doing cars for 12 years now and i can pretty much hold my own working independents where im usually the only tech.. ive only once had a mentor who was as tech savvy and knowledgeable as this man.. unfortunately it was my first job at a dealership and i was not at all of the mind to be able to learn what he was showing me and maintain it.. i was still struggling with mounting tires lol.. oh how times change... after watching this video i realize i still have a lot of work to do and can be a lot more detailed in my diagnostics when some times i am not.. im still using Snapon Solus and really would like to make the move to the scan tool your using and learn to use it as you have shown in the video here.. very very good work!! i only know one man who works to this standard, he works for Dodge and is the #2 Tech in NY State. think one of only a handful to be certified by dodge to work on the Viper and other odd models like Hybrids they put out.. Prowler i believe needed certified techs to work on.. again, SWEEET video! best ive seen on you tube!! i request more in depth tutorials on the scan tool your using please

Just going back and catching some of your older videos. This video was about the time we started having trouble with our 04 Liberty. About the same mileage also. Our lifters started losing oil pressure and making a clattering noise. Did the entire top end of the engine, new valves, lifters, guides, seats, everything. Lasted a two months and did it again. Never did figure out what was causing the lifters to lose oil pressure. Traded it in.

OK, i'm halfway thru this vid and gotta throw in my 2 cents. Two wired coils are triggered directly by PCM. Dead short from primary to secondary winding (cracked or cracking body of the coil ) oozing insulating goop due a jump to ground or bad spark plug. The PCM is firing because of signal from bad CKP, or the CKP is bad due to a shorted CMP sharing an internal circuit from the PCM. Where's a ballast resistor when you need one.

maybe too much current into the coil's primary side! or shut the Jeep off and took the key out of the ignition and keep the scanner hooked up to the computer, verify if the Jeep was trying to start on its own! There is an issues with crank or cam that the coils remain hot even when the car is off.

I purchased my Liberty with 169,+++ miles on it, 2 of the cylinders were intermittently misfiring. the coils didn't look like yours, but when I started looking at things, it still had the oem plugs in it! and after replacing the plugs (funny enough, I put NGK plugs in it!) it still intermittently misfired. I just replaced all the coils. I figured that they were done in by having to jump the > .100" plug gaps. and since I don't particularly enjoy being stranded, it was a safer bet to replace all of them.

I had the same problem with a Ford F150 the coil driver would intermittently ground out. the truck had been at several shops and had 6 #3 coils replaced . The wire was chafed on the passenger side about 1 1/2 feet away from the PCM connector. I hope this helps. Check the powers and grounds @ the PCM and the battery pay attention to block and body grounds too. The PCM is protected by the PTC and will usually protect the drivers .

Here's an experiment that I've done before. Hook your scope up to your battery charger. Look at the waveform. Every charger I've ever checked has never had perfect dc current. That could be why you've heard people say not to turn the key on, although I've done it dozens of times without issue.

In regards to connecting the charger with the key on: I once connected a 20ish amp charger to a Ford Tempo with a dead battery while the headlight switch was on. The headlight bulbs flared on like flashbulbs and burned out. A couple of months ago my boss hooked up a 200 amp charger/starter to a Dodge Cummins while the key was on. We had to replace the PCM and a few days later the ECU had P0606 and had to be replaced. The Dodge might just be a coincidence though.

The coil was powered possibly because it was in position to fire in it's cycle and the others weren't but apparently the coil was bad and you were the lucky one to discover it.
@haywardsautomotive6156

The CMP sensor signal went crazy as soon as it happened. Wonder if it is keeping the ASD powered and shorted CMP sensor taking out whatever coil it's synched to when it dies? It's the same 5V ref wire to the CKP so maybe one took the other one out? Just thinking out loud and can't wait to see what you found!
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 8 лет назад
+Hayward's Automotive :) You may be onto something....
@Clete88
@Clete88 8 лет назад
+Hayward's Automotive How could the shorted sensor tell the computer to supply continuous ground to a particular coil? I haven't seen the schematic on this, but I think this system is a ground supply, under PCM control.....sensors supply the inputs, yes, but ultimately, the command on signal for the coils comes from a ground supplied by the box, right? Ignition coils have duty cycles. They aren't designed to be turned on 100% of the time because they're not demanded to.....So.....Could this be a continuous on condition, or an exaggerated duty cycle for whatever reason overheating them? How do you mesh burned up coils with engine flooding?
@haywardsautomotive6156
@haywardsautomotive6156 8 лет назад
+Clete88 I don't want to steal Eric's suspense so as he diagnosis the problem it'll all make sense plus I just took a logical guess with what I seen & wrote up above. Just trying to figure out what caused the fuel odor Eric smelled, burned up coils, bad CKP sensor and the stalling after the CKP sensor, coils and plugs were changed. It started cold and after getting heat soaked it failed. Hopefully he won't keep us in suspense too long b/c that was a sizzling ending to Part I.
@bobmoy3406
@bobmoy3406 8 лет назад
+Hayward's Automotive Plus the fact that when Eric tried to start the engine the CMK signal was missing (Tach didn't jump) when he was cranking the engine. The engine only started after the cam signal was restored. Dr. O also determined that the PCM used a substituted CKP signal and that the CKP is really not needed to keep the engine running. So a bad CMK signal will cause the coil to keep on firing and also cause the injectors to keep firing, the reason for the strong gas odor. Let's hope that the CMK sensor or something related is the problem (bad wiring) and not the PCM or we can be looking past Part 2...lol

+Hayward's Automotive Amazing Eric had the scope on the right circuit at the right time. Imagine if he put it all back together and gave it to the customer to have it come back with the same issue and two new fried coils. That would be my luck.

In the end, it sounds like relays buzzing. My guess is a bad ground to the PCM or the PCM is messed up. Could be an explanation why 2 of the coils burned up. Interesting story, I was troubleshooting an electrical problem on a Dodge, the instrument cluster and body control module were acting really strange, and relays were buzzing under the dash. Ended up being a dollar store cell phone charger plugged in the cigarette lighter that was putting noise into the system and glitching everything on the accessory circuit.

NGK ZFR6F-11G V-Power is actually the stock spark plug for this application. NGK makes a platinum variant as well (PZFR6F-11), but for some reason they no longer recommend it for direct replacement. Not sure if it's because of temperature or what.

In a GOOD design you build in a second circuit to shut off coil power if the regular timing circuit gets stuck. Like a bog simple resistor and capacitor, which can't crash like software can. Ten cents of insurance to prevent the expensive sizzles.

on the first time, i'm thinking bad crank sensor keeps signalling as if engine is cranking and so the coil & injectors get power. I ?wonder why the coil burnt up though.. maybe the same thing happened again and stalled the engine etc.. could be a sudden current spike/short circuit.. waiting for part 2

EPIC CLIFFHANGER!!!! Cant wait for Part 2 -- on a different note I know your love of the junkyard well I work at one of the largest if not the largest auto scrapyard in the NE in Mass. We've already processed 6,000 vehicles in 2016 , I run heavy equipment there. I'll try n make a short vid for ya of the place I call it the Walmart of junkyards you would be in heaven there. we process 100-125 cars a day absolute insanity lmao
