I live on a tropical region, therefore I installed a 160 degree thermostat along with a new water pump, radiator and auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. I run the stock fan setup and also have a 3 year old fan clutch. It runs at 210 on the dashboard but sometimes it runs a little hot. I changed the sending unit 2 times and no change. I installed a separate temp gauge and placed the sensor on the radiator drain plug hole. And it stays at 180 and max out at 200

Great info on the "heater" trick. If the heat coming out of your vents in the cab isn't HOT after the engine has been operating for awhile, check the thermostat and radiator hoses for temperature differences. If they are about the same, most likely the thermostat is stuck OPEN. This is the first thing I ask customers, "Does the heat coming out of your vents seem warm or hot?" Also forgot to mention the tid-bit about the radiator fan. If the engine is up at operating temperature and the thermostat opens but the temperature isn't decreasing, the computer will have the radiator fan operate. If the fan doesn't work, then that's another path to troubleshoot. Two different options here if the thermostat is GOOD so you are looking at the radiator fan now: 1) If the engine is running cold, verify the fan isn't ON constantly. 2) If the engine is running hot, verify the fan does turn ON when commanded. Most of the time, you can use a scan tool to operate the fan electronically. If you don't have a tool, pull the plug for the fan (not sure how to do it on an older vehicle with a fan clutch) and apply 12VDC to the pins/sockets. The fan doesn't always run at FULL speed, so 9 to 12 volts is a good test to verify the fan operating speeds (less voltage means lower fan speed, higher voltage means higher fan speed). I use a 9V battery for a lower voltage test. If the voltage test works and the fan is operational, then work back to the sending unit, coolant temp sensor, or the relay/control module to verify that it's putting out the correct voltage when needed, or operating at all. You can get into the weeds on this error, but time put forth up front will save you money and time later on if the problem isn't diagnosed properly the first time. You hit all of the other key points.

My BMW 2004 model....has been running cold...last night ..in a split second it went to the H.... however....the car didn't overheat....is that a false reading? I checked the cylinder heads..and oil....it didn't look frothy.. etc...so I didn't blow a head gasket. I was told it is either the thermostat or the coolant temperature sensor...any advice?
@willthethrill360
@willthethrill360 2 года назад
@@williambernstein4313 if it spikes randomly, most likely wiring to the sensor. Wiggle the wiring and have someone else watch the gauge. If it doesn't fluctuate, possible sensor. Worst case, your ECM is going nuts. Hate BMW/Mercedes for their wiring and computer issues. Thermostats don't react in the blink of an eye, so I would put that further down on the troubleshooting list.

My little diagnostic test for the thermostat off a cold start is to watch the temperature gauge as the engine warms up. When it hits the thermostat opening temp (195° for my YJ) the temperature on the gauge will suddenly drop when the cold radiator starts circulating. I personally have never ever had one stick open but your explanation on how to tell if it stuck open is correct. I have run plenty of engines with no thermostat in a pinch and the exact behavior you described as stuck open occurs. In a pinch on the road if your thermostat does fail stuck closed, you can remove it. I did that once and salvaged the torn gasket and used my wives finger nail polish for gasket sealer!

I have a 1992 Jeep YJ with a 2.5 engine. I have only one sensor. My gauge is not working but other gauges are working in the cluster. When I bought the Jeep someone had put an after market temp gauge in. Changed the sensor at the thermostat housing. It worked. I found the old sensor still plugged into the wiring plug harness. I put a new sensor in the where the aftermarket was and plugged the original plug back in. The original gauge still didn't work. Also the aftermarket didn't work. I suspect the original wiring may be cut some place under the dash. As mentioned other gauges are working in the cluster. Thoughts. Your videos are good and enjoy them. I just want the original to work. Thank you. P.S. I do not have another sensor at the back of the engine any where arrond the head. I have looked and felt many times. Is this a 4.0 addition?

I'm sure you've repaired the lower rad hose leak by now. Every time I find one of those spring clamps on a vehicle I'm working on it gets tossed to the scrap bin and replaced with something that actually works. Even a cheap gear clamp is preferable to any spring type.

If you have a problem with a P0188 or something related to that, always look at your temperature sensor plug to make sure you don't have a bad wire on that, that is what my problem came from. Very simple but it will give a P0188 code like mine has. Check the voltage on the plug if the wire is not appearing broken to make sure you have voltage there. Simple fix though. If it is broken or the wire is off, get a new plug connector for the sensor at somewhere like O'Reilly's.

Appreciate your videos. I have a 95 yj, 4cl, 210k kms. Runs well, no leaks, but the temp gauge fluctuates a bit when up to operating temp, briefly showing a little hotter while driving, though most dead centre on the gauge while driving, and always dead centre when idling in traffic. When I turn the engine off but leave the key in acc, the gauge often runs up another 10 degrees C or so, to the next line on the gauge, but not to the warning line. It settles to the middle line as soon as I start it back up. Heat works great. Original rad, no visible leaks and I keep an eye on the coolant level both in the rad and reservoir, but I do faintly smell coolant sometimes when close to the rad after driving. Newer rad cap, new heater core and rad hoses this winter. I rebled the system thinking might be air. Haven't changed the t-stat though. Suggestions?

I own a 2003 JGC WJ w/4.0 and it just pulled a code P1281 today. That code is for the engine running too cool initially. I had just put in a new t-stat about two weeks before. I took apart the t-stat housing and wouldn't you know it, the t-stat was stuck open. So, if you have that P1281 code or your vehicle takes a long time to get up to operating temperature, consider replacing the t-stat.

So I’ve been having a problem with my gf’s 2008 Jeep Liberty. I’ve changed the Radiator, Thermostat, radiator fan and temp sensor. It fixed the over heating momentarily then it started again. It's a 'while I'm in there' change. The cost of the sensor is usually less than the trouble to have to go back and drain the coolant, and change it after the fact. Kind of like when you're replacing all the old, murky brake fluid when you're bleeding the brakes.

I am having these issues, about a year ago I noticed fluctuation so while doing an oil change I replaced the thermostat a short time later I purchased a heads up display as I was having issues with the dash being to dark in daylight and having to turn parking lights on to see the speedo well ( the heads up works great) it has 5 readouts one being water temp, everything has been good up until two weeks ago sitting in traffic on a hot day I watched both gauges working hand in hand raising temp to the point of the heads up setting off an alarm so I pulled into a parking lot and let it cool, I found the water was low never having leaks no oil in water and no water in oil I filled water in Radiator and overflow to correct level also tried burping, things seemed to be ok until last night driving 20 miles to a friends before leaving I check water and oil and they were just as they should be and all was good until leaving it was another hot evening at sundown so I turned the A/C on after a couple of miles I noticed the. temp on both gauges was about 130 and fluctuated up to 145 and back so I tried turning the heater on and with my hand in front of the vent the hot air felt like it was plenty warn and right where it should be but the gauges stay low for another 10 miles home, this morning after checking water and oil I went for a ride temp came up and stoped where it was last night 130's-140's after a while I turned the heater on again on was feeling like its normal 180 so now the only thing I can think of is it being the temp sensor........ any thoughts?

I have 1992 Jeep Cherokee XJ with all stock parts in it. My problem is my Jeep takes awhile to heat up and does NOT hold the heat in the cab very when it’s not running or driving down the freeway. It used to get pretty toasty before the large metal fuse on the back on my van speed control fried up. We thought it was my fan blowing motor cause that died when the fuse controller died so we replaced my fan blower (which needed replacing anyways due to a loud motor) and then we pulled my dash off and looked behind the control unit and found the fried unit. Right now we have the blower power spliced to hot wire so it will turn on. We do not have a replacement controller yet, my Jeep heats up after running awhile and everything but I feel like it’s suppose to heat up faster then it does (right now it takes about 45 mins to be comfortable with a high idle, and or many stops and restarts from running around in town. ) my thoughts are it could be a heater core issue, or my vents are stuck on halfway open cause the unit fried while my boyfriend was adjusting the speed on the fan. (But my fan sounds like it’s running on high) I also have a vacuum leak running from my HVAC under my fender. Would this vacuum line running along my whole under hood be a reason for my lack on heat in my vents? Only my defrosters on my dash blows out a significant amount of heat. Please help. It’s cold in Michigan lol.

Ive got a 2012 Chrysler 200 3.6. it's overheating. I've replaced the water pump, oil cooler, thermostat, hoses. I replaced the radiator about 3 yrs ago. after replacing these parts, it's still overheating but doesn't start overheating until I've been on freeway for about 15 min. only thing I can thing of is the radiator needs replacing. it's the only thing left. I have no leaks at all and no water in my oil . any ideas what it is. I only have a coolant reservoir cap , not a radiator cap and I replaced it as well. any help you can give me?

By chance can the temp sensor that goes into the thermostat housing be turned into the sending sensor?

Hi, I have a 2013 traverse overheating...I first checked for leaks and could not find one. Old thermostat replaced looked like it did needed to be replqced but still as I drove temperature needle was moving above normal temp..no enginge light on dashboard so doubt it's the temp sensor..not sure what else to look for..any suggestions? Please help. Thank you..new subscriber.

I thought it was the water pump on the reason why my car was overheating but when I squeezed the hoses All of them, they were solid Rock and the hoses were hot. But once I left the car sit out for a few hours I tried to squeeze those hoses again but as usual they were cold from sitting out for a while but now I can actually squeeze it it's not solid rock no more. There is no visible leaks. My car is overheating but it has plenty of coolant. And based on squeezing the hoses at hot and cold I'm assuming that's circulating. I replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor as well as the cooling fan. My car only has one cooling fan. And The fan only turns on when AC or heater is on. But when the HVAC system is off the fans do not turn on at all. I replaced the ECT sensor and thermostat. But even when the AC's on it I can still see smoke coming from the engine but if I put my foot on the gas while idling the needle goes down back to the middle but smokes coming from the engine and it smells like oil but there's also no visible oil leaks. I don't know what else is wrong with this car.

So I replaced my thermostat, water pump and fan clutch. My 94 jeep is still over heating. I've bled the system as much as I thought was enough. Could I still have aor trapped because I'm still over heating and no fluid is moving through bottom hose.

Nice video, but the one thing I was interested in was not elaborated upon. What about determining if the temperature sending unit is good or bad? It still may be working, but just sending a higher temperature then expected. That's what I'd like to figure out, but otherwise yeah you can go buy a new one.

Just replace it if it’s not the thermostat, it’s only $10-15

Mike Carter if it’s happening only during idle, it might be the fan clutch

They’re easy. Get a service jack and a wood block. Jack and support the engine by the oil pan drain bolt side.

Do I really have to wait 24 hours for cure time on the permatex I added to the thermostat gasket to make sure it stays in place on the thermostat housing? It says wait 24 hours before adding coolant.

My gauge reads way too low and when feeling the hoses it's my top radiator hose that heats up not the hose going to my heater core. Is it my thermostat? Thanks, Tommy

The lower hose on my 1995 yj 2.5 is not warming up at all. Gauge is reading around 120 degrees too after a radiator replacement, tstat and gasket and new fluid. Any suggestions? Love your videos!
