After selling my 1997 TJ, I then picked up this 1989 YJ as my next project. First up is getting the dashboard back in shape. I am using Rustoleum Painters 2X paint for both the plastic dashboard and the metal parts of the dashboard. Let’s connect 🤜💥🤛

Finally, a CLEAR video where the dash isn't pulled off before painting. I needed to see how well it could work without removing any panels. Wonderful job.

Super helpful, I just picked up the same jeep this winter and the dash has faded to almost a light green color. I'm finding that replacement spice interior parts are difficult to find. Maybe I'll just touch it up like this

Thanks. Hope this helps. It’s hard and expensive to buy replacement parts. I find the paint to work great and make it look like new and holds up great!

The dash looks great! I have been wanting to do the same to mine. How has it held up - scratch easily or starting to peal up?

Thanks. I no longer have the Jeep but it held up for years. Never peeled or cracked. It would scratch though, but not that easily and I guess no worse than an unpainted dash would scratch. But good thing is that it was easy to touch up if needed with just a quick spray

Nice work!! I have a 2009 Sahara that I am looking paint the interior. Did you leave the dash board in when you did the two tone on the TJ as well?

Thanks. Yeah for the TJ I left the main dash in and taped around it, but a lot of the dash comes off such as over the speakers, the glove box, the panels under the steering wheel, the center dash console. So I took those off which were easy and sprayed them outside the Jeep, then just taped off the main body of the dash that I couldnt remove and sprayed that in the Jeep

What is the color that you used in the Rust-Oleum paint for the dash color. Looks good. I have the same jeep and I need to re-coat the same thing.

Chris C. Thanks Chris. It’s Rustoleum Gloss Khaki. About $4.00 a can st any of the major box stores. I’ve been using this color on different things for years and it seem like a color that’s always easy to find in almost any store. So it’s always easy to find it if you ever need more to do touch ups

Thanks for the reply. Done my dash about 16 years ago. Used some mixed OE from Napa and a model car air brush. It's finally showing some age and coming off/fading. I'll give that paint a try.

I wish the new jeeps could be Column shifted. You could use the floor for the 4 wheel drive. Thus have both and moee space

I hear ya. I’m guessing there’s a technical advantage of having the shifter on the floor as it’s closer to the transmission. But I miss the days of column shift vehicles. Seems like nobody makes them anymore.

@@Mudslidex1 Yeah it’s very unfortunate. Variety would be nice. Everything has to be like a race car now. It’s basically only full size trucks and vans now that have it.

How is this paint holding up? I have the same Jeep I’m about to start working on...same colors. Not sure if I want to shop around for parts or just paint it.

I no longer have this Jeep so I can't tell you. But the reason I used this paint is because I previously had a TJ and painted the dash using the same paint. I had the TJ for 5 years with the top and doors off all Summer and the paint looked the same 5 years after painting it.

I don't have that Jeep anymore. But I had a TJ that I used the same paint on it's dashboard. I had that Jeep for 5 years and paint held up like new the whole time. That's why I went with the same type when I did the YJ

Where do I find those mirrors and have you gotten rid of the rims?

I kept the rims. I'm not sure about the mirrors, they came on the Jeep when I bought it. But I'm guessing they are like these Rugged Ridge ones: www.extremeterrain.com/rugged-ridge-stainless-steel-yj-7418.html

Lol. They don't work anyway and I wasn't planning on using them. That's why I didn't bother. Not worth the effort removing. Especially the idiotic way YJs are designed to remove them :)

Reasonable, hey do you know what the 4 holes on the back passenger corner are for? I have a 95 YJ with the same thing but nothing to go there. I feel like I need to plug them up so water isn't getting in the body

@@giraff3z I believe those holes are for the Instatrunk. I had an instatrunk that came with my TJ, but I sold it. I believe YJ's had one as well and bolt to those holes.

Actually, I just looked it up and they are for the stock tire stop from the tailgate

@@giraff3z oh. You're talking about the holes in the tailgate? The yes. That's what those are for. I thought you meant the holes on the inside of the tub. Glad you figured it out

The speakers were blown and I wasn't putting in a stereo anyway. So yeah, paint right over them! :)

Yes I did. But only because I knew I was repainting the rest of the Jeep anyway. Good eye!

Yeah I know lol. They were shot and not even connected anymore plus they we're being replaced anyway so I didn't care about painting over them

@@chriss.3476 Yes, but I'm not installing a stereo. Wranglers have horrible acoustics and no space for properly sized speakers to sound good. So I never cared for stereos in my TJ or YJ. With the top down you can barely hear them anyway and I'm not wasting precious cargo space for speaker boxes/subs etc. That's just me though

Could've at least taken off the front window which would've made it much easier. Nice job without doing that though

I could have/should have done a lot of things that would have made it easier to paint . But it seemed like every bolt I turned on that Jeep was rusted and had a couple just snap off. I wasn't ready to add more work by having to remove more busted bolts :)
