This was a damned good video. Clear footage…clear language. I’m in my mid 60s, original owner of a spec-ordered ‘97 TJ Sport with the inline 6 and 5:speed manual, and she now has right around 145k on the clock. I’ve battled rust (I now live in New England) with the frame, but the body is pristine (I did however replace the windshield frame, and both front fenders). All my kids learned to drive “stick” on her and as she still has the original clutch, I guess my teaching technique (yell, grimace, groan and frown) worked! Anyway, considering a complete restoration, as I don’t have the heart to part with her….but until I commit to that, your videos are exceptional at “keeping her fit”….so thank you, amigo, and I’ve subscribed!. Well done!

I've watched several videos about shock changes, yours was the first to correctly address the wire retainers and the jam nuts. Good job.

Thanks! So many people mess those parts up because they just don't know. Leaving the wire retainers in place helps soooo much!!

Thanks for an informative video. I went to change the front shock (passenger side), removed air box cover and filter. Grabbed my 8MM socket and then noticed that the previous owner had a piece of duct tape applied to the bottom of the air box. Well curiosity got the best of me and I pulled off the tape, revealing a smoothly cut round hole just above the nut on the top of the shock absorber. Not sure this is recommended or what influence it has on air flow, but it sure made changing the shock, that much easier.

Whatever works to make life easier. It isn't going to hurt the air flow any. Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for leaving a great comment.

Cool vid. I know how to change shocks, but this is my first Jeep, ( '98 TJ ) Its actually my sons.His TJ is badly rusted up, and when he got it home, I started going over it. The first thing is the TV cable is broken, so thats a priority, then his radiator has a leak, thats number two, then I'm going to do both front shocks and rotors, the the rear shocks and drums. His TJ has a ton of rust so I bought some Kroil to hopefully break loose everything. We'll see if it lives up to its rep....thanks for the vid...at least I can see what I'm looking for....gonna watch your rear shock next.. those are the ones that worry me the most. The bottom bolts will come loose, even rusted up, but the tops mount to the body. THOSE are the ones that might screw everything up getting the old ones out...Thanks for the vid!

I changed my YJ shocks a while ago. I only drive it aprox. 1500-2000 miles a year. I thought the best thing to do, because I wanted to improve the ability was to go with HD shocks (Replaced Front & Rear shocks, with Gabriel Ultra/Shock (lifetime warranty). To me it was a big mistake. The Jeep now rides VERY rough/stiff. I also removed the rear tac-bar.
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 4 года назад
Yea ... He bought HD for that TJ. It rides much worse after the shocks. I suggest to people to get the best warranty light duty shock to install. Your back will thank you!! LOL

Great video, made the job go smooth and easy. My auto parts guy said to remove the wiring first because you couldn't seat the bushing flush. Wrong! Two better ways to do it: First, follow the video and simply compress the shock enough to move the wire down. Another way is to slide the washer and bushing into place...then when you cut wire and pull it out, the washer and bushing are right where they need to be...My rears did not come with the wiring. Wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it did require more muscle/work -- and who needs that??? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience...!

I'm thinking about tackling this on my TJ. Very nice to see that you don't need a jack and to take the tire off to do this. Do you think it would be wise to use a little thread sealer on the nut that holds the shock in? If so, what type? Thanks!

Nice Vid. Did you have to support the front axle with a jack ? It seems all you did was rotate the wheel for some space and replaced the shocks without removing the wheel or supporting the axle as some others have done in their videos.

My buddy says the Jeep rides much stiffer with these shocks. I've ridden and driven the Jeep and I have to agree. So honestly I couldnt give you an honest suggestion as to what brand or kind of shock to get. If you like a stiff ride, go with the shock in the video. Thanks for dropping by! Have a great day!

I picked up a '99 TJ a couple weeks ago and I'm thinking it needs new shocks. I can feel just about every bump in the road, and I've looked at the shocks and they're not OE, but they're old looking and got some rust on them, but I can't visually see any leaks.

+Power Addicts - FixJeeps.com - Jeep, car and motorcycle tips painting the fender flares is another project for mine but I'm debating on removing the flares or just masking everything off. My dad said that his was. I looked at them, they look like a real pain. I haven't had a reason to pull as set off yet so I couldn't vouch personally. I've been wanting to pull mine off and go with steel. Just haven't done it yet.

That's my buddy's rig. Not sure where he got them. He usually goes to Autozone. Dont get the heavy duty like he did. That thing now will shake your kidneys out from the shocks being to stiff for that light weight Jeep.

@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 6 лет назад
I've used Monroe and Gabriel from the auto parts store and have had good luck with both. But, one word of advice for Jeeps. Don't get the "Heavy Duty", they are set to be a stiffer shock. Jeeps are really light to begin with so using a stiff valved heavy duty shock .... the Jeep will ride rough. So, a standard quality shock will be fine. Thanks for checking out the vid! Have a great day!
