SomeGuy sets out to build a minimal amount of space consuming storage rack for his Jeep Cherokee XJ, something a lot of XJ Cherokee owners have wanted due to the undersaturated aftermarket products.

Next level production 😂😂 The one thing I hate about my XJ is the the door opens upwards. It means you can’t hang a spare tyre on the back, so you need a heavy tyre carrier and you can’t mount anything on the inside of it, like a table or something. One of the best things I did to add extra storage was to remove the 2 rear windows and replace them with aluminium panels. I was able to mount fuel and water cans on the outside and molle panels on the inside.

I totally agree, I would love if the Cherokee had a more traditional tail gate set up. I’ve been brainstorming a couple different things for more storage like the window delete. I don’t think it’s as doable with my 2 door as it would be with a 4 door but maybe I’ll just be a first among many! I do hate my s(h)Mitty built tire carrier snd will be taking it off or cutting it up soon! It’s too heavy snd doesn’t hold anything useful IMO

@@SomeGuyOutside ahh yes, I’ve never seen the window delete on a 2 door. We didn’t get those here in Australia. I built a spare wheel carrier that slips into the tow hitch. There are several good designs on RU-vid. A clever guy like you could soon build one. I take it off while I’m running around town, doing my daily stuff. I figure if I get a flat, I can call the wife and she can bring me the spare 😂 I only put the spare on when I’m going camping or off roading or more than an hour from home :)

Great job on the shelf build. It works. As for the use of the top surface (I'm sure you've already thought of this) Some sort of anti skid material, to prevent things stored there, from sliding into and breaking your quarter glass. GOd bless and stay well.

I was originally thinking of a carpet material on the wood to give it some more friction, definitely a concern of mine but haven’t decided yet!
