Guro Dan Inosanto gives an awe inspiring demonstration of Jeet Kune Do's trapping. Bruce Lee's first Martial Art was Wing Chun and it's influence is abundant in this video.
I celebrated his 65 birthday with him at a muay thai camp in the mountains of oregon....even at that age he was amazing with his speed and instincts....I know from first hand experience that hes the real deal
I’ve had the honor to work in a seminar with Guru, just receiving the transfer of his knowledge base was incredible. Just listening to him, those whispers never fade. He puts in perspective, keep training, keep conditioning, keep exploring and building,, nobody has all the answers, he noted, not even Sifu Bruce Lee. Each system borrows from another. Find what works for you, your body, your mindset, and what Tactical situation you’ll likely be exposed to. Wow for Guru to approaching 84 years, what a living gem. We’re so grateful to have your presence sir. Wishing you many more prosperous and productive years.
what an incredibly humble grandmaster. Instead of him doing the techniques, he gives his students the opportunity to shine while he explains the technique. He knows he's the grandmaster and has no desire for the limelight and feels comfortable letting his students demonstrate the techniques and letting them shine.
+J.R Charles The dude in the end of the video that Dan was holding the pads for didn't look particularly shite. Even though i'm not sure about that "step in front snap kick" lol.
I called Dan Inosanto's residence in Carson many years ago and talked to his wife. I inquired about instruction but she informed me there were no openings. At the time he was teaching in his garage about 6 or 7 students at the time. Loved Bruce Lee and would have love Mr. Inosanto teaching me Jeet Kune Do.
Hi I have been doing wing chun 3 years now, previously did judo for 5 years and Japanese jujitsu to Dan grade. It took me a long time to get used to wing chun but I love it and find it powerful without being powerful..you will know what I mean by that. A lot of people only see it and never do it.
Guru Dan Inosanto is arguably the most cross-trained Martial Artist of all time with Dan rankings or the equivalents in Chinese, Japanese, Filipino martial arts and has added BJJ to his knowledge. An honest GrandMaster if there ever was one
Phenom Azure ..... I don’t think there’s any film out there ...... but Guru Dan is also in his 70’s now & no longer a young man. He does have a Blackbelt through the Machado’s though ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8ZKNlYBCkO0.html
I would love to training with this gentleman and learn from this magnificent grandmaster!! The highest regard of respect for Mr. Inosanto and hope to meet him some day!! What a very knowledgeable man and so humble!!
Jacky Chew dan inosanto is not japanese.. he's a pure blooded filipino and a grandmaster not only in JKD but also in art of arnis .. He taught bruce lee the ways of arnis.. arnis is philippines best self defence and its now regarded by many as one of the effective self defence in the world of martial arts..
It's refreshing to hear Guro Dan express that if a person really wants to understand Jeet Kune Do, they need to understand trapping and certain aspects of the Wing Chun system. As Sijo Bruce Lee's only fully certified JKD instructor under him when he was still alive, his words have much weight and value. Thank you for the video.
Tuan Tran JKD why refreshing? Of course they have to understand basic wing Chun concepts like centerline, gates, and of course techniques and trapping range. JKD is basically at least half wing Chun.
I was lucky enough to meet with and attend a weekend seminar with Mr. Insanto in Mich. in the early '90s. He was in his fifties already, but he still was very fast and fluid with his hands. Great teacher. It was a privilege.
Thanks for coming to Adelaide, Australia in the early 1980’s Dan. The few lessons and your demonstrations have kept me on my journey learning Wing Chun. 🙏
I love this video. I just have to say it. I've trained with Guru Dan many times. My instructor under Guru Dan is Mike Krivka in the Rockville Maryland area. I've even trained with Yoshi who assists Guru Dan in the video. I had used this video many times to share with people to give them a sense of not only the roots of Wing Chun in JKD but also to see a little bit of what it's like to train with this living legend. I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity. Thank you again for this video.
Amazing instructor. He wasn't just a friend and student of Bruce Lee. He also taught Bruce Lee the nunchaku and kali/escrima stick fighting (see Enter the Dragon where BL uses both) so he was also an instructor of Bruce Lee too. Dan is great in his own right in innovating JKD further and teaching thousands of students over the years.
when someone taught bruce lee a technique he was better than them after a week he used to do demonstrations and imitated karate masters and did it better than them also even if it took them years to master he did it in a few weeks
Guru Inosanto is indeed a legend. I had the honor of training with him for a few days at Anderson's Martial Arts in NYC. I'm currently a red belt in JKD and pushing hard. DO NOT doubt anything this man says. Those of us who have worked with him in person shall back him up 100%. If you gave this a thumbs down, I honestly would love to know why.
I met Master Dan Inosanto at a place in Nothern Virginia where I trained for many years where we learned JKD,BJJ,Muay Thai and Phillipino martial arts. Dan was absolutely amazing and respected by EVERYONE including my teacher, the apprentice instructors and all of the students and guests! That place was PACKED to see a living legend!
@@richcapo No he himself Sayed in the interview that he is not helping them not so much for how to defend themselves instead the help them in the compative form of the art of the expression the human body.
I trained with Guro Dan in the 80's and Larry Hartsell ...a big eyeopener for me and changed my thoughts o the arts ,that all have something to bring to the table and therefore if you can make use of it ,it's yours ...take it !
Dan Inosanto be & do "such" a good job helping with Bruce's Teaching, wow. Jeet Kune Do amazes me, it is so heavy, and advanced,....and comprehensive, and so many things to it. It moves so fast in this training session, covering leaps and bounds of ground, for the student, and just anyway. It's hilarious, lol. And Dan's help with Bruce's Teaching here in this particular video & training session, as well as the other awesome student's & practitioner of JKD here, is only just barely scratching the teeniest surface of what Jeet Kune Do is, yet it seem like a 100 hour lesson(s) & session, with so much ground covered, wow. I love the fact that Dan tells "the truth" about JKD and everything about it, the way Master Bruce came up, and his words for it, such as regarding Bruce's great roots, it's hysterical to me still, how good JKD is, and again..I am amazed by it, always of course. Thank you Dan Inosanto, Bruce in the first place, and the other student shown here, so much for this wonderful training. This student that Dan is working with shows great promise in his form, especially in his his kicking form(s), with a super snap that definitely remind me of Bruce so much, yay! And also..thanks to Bruce's many Sensei and influences, all of which he always honor so much, yay!
But knowing Ip Man wasn’t going to teach Bruce Lee because he wasn’t full Chinese might’ve been a hard pill to swallow but Bruce still looked highly to IP Man as a master. I’ve been to Bruce Lee gravesite, that was the closest I will ever be to knowing Bruce Lee.
@@millsbomb007 being born in jupiter or mars will have nothing to do with it, it's just the US law but not universal. Bruce though was not pure chinese in the sense he got western ancestors in his blood.
I took a seminar with Guro Dan Inosanto at new york martial arts academy in 1988 , Guro Dan is one of the most talented teachers in addition to his incredible wealth of knowledge and skill.
I practiced WC for a little until a few JKD guys came in because they wanted to learn the roots of JKD. I started learning from them and back and forth. I'm glad to see that Mr. Inosanto brings in Wing Chun instructors to teach his JKD students. He respects the roots where as the JKD studio that I went to did not do so. They talked down on Wing Chun then they proceeded to execute poor wing chun techniques. Because they rushed through techniques that they lacked touch sensitivity. I was able to trap the senor students there on accident and they didn't want to chi sao with me anymore. One thing that I did picked up from the JKD guys who came in the WC classes that I liked better was their grapple techniques. What JKD lacked WC had, what WC lacked JKD had. I came to the realization that there is no best/complete art and Bruce's desire to learn more really inspires me. I think that a JKD practitioner will become better at JKD if they learned their roots and a WC practitioner will have a better fight IQ if they learn how to adapt and apply more physical drilling like JKD.
L Cha I think jkd uses wingchun theory as a base in terms of going in the opponent uses the agility work in boxing/fencing and high kicks in taekwondo/northern kungu for adaptation.
"What JKD lacked WC had" - the part of the narrative I strongly disagree with. You got to have strong background on JKD before spitting what some dude say here as 'educated analysis'.. When Bruce fought Wong Jack Man, he used Wing Chun, for in those days JKD was still in infancy. Bruce discovered many flaws though he won that fight, then he proceeded to develop Jeet Kune Do with Wing Chun as base. Ip Man hated the idea that his wing chun had weaknesses and had bitter feelings towards Bruce till his death. Upon adapting western boxing as part of jeet kune do, Bruce realized that chi sao was not applicable in real life situations, for nobody will hold their arms long enough to get trapped, chi sao only worked against kung fu styles but in the West it was completely irrelevant, so Bruce declared that chi sao was out in his post JKD. If you see demonstrations of chi sao and looked good that is because the students are passive actors. Watch Anderson Silva's fights in the UFC, his applications of chi sao are all awkward.
Thanks to Guro Dan, I am now lucky enough to be learning from an instructor of his - Jason Daly in Dresden Germany. I am amazed at the depth of knowledge that you share - Thank You! Sifu David Maddox, Dresden Germany
one of the worlds last genuine Grand Masters in martial arts. those who believe sport mma is greater than the martial science mastery that this man posesses knows nothing about true martial arts.
Right. Actually the name MMA itself carries the same idea as JKD, that there's no definite styles and the most effective fighting methods evolves with the practice of people. Btw, history repeats itself. 400 years ago, praying mantis kung fu was born combining 18 features of other styles. As a practitioner, I was asked to demonstrate in the sanda school I went for a bit workout, and they were really impressed. Later on, not only me refined my way of practice, but our school performed better in competitions incorporating some of my concept and skills, too! =)
For fuck sake, I am so tired of comments like this... You realize, MMA is a modern principle of JDK... Their are videos of Guru Dan training Anderson Silva, so Dan obviously has a great deal of respect for MMA, and your disrespect of MMA means you know nothing of true martial arts.
martial science (another fake name like jkd and mma who are not martial artist but practioners) is not martial arts which is gunfu which comes from wu shu. anything else is merely self defense and fragmented. you cannot invent martial arts when it already exist
RPG 808 I already said it - Gung-fu is Wu Shu which is true martial arts that originated in southern china that builds chi. "Martial' means 'primary' - meaning the first, the primary (other than to the ignorant of it) is kuntao.
RPG 808 but how would you know? what martial arts do you know? And what boot-leggin', fake-martial artist taught you? The name tells you where it is from. Then tell me, how does what you know build chi'? I bet you your lo-life, you can't answer any of these, least more with any proof. You just don't know who I am. You better ask somebody, holmes
Love it when i see people teaching different ranges of combat. Many schools wont teach close quarter, leaving people with only basic techniques or advanced that cant be used.
Watching Dan is just the best. He's so relaxed and matter of fact, his energy seems more easy going that when we seen him in action when he was younger. But, to be honest he doesn't seem any less dangerous, on the contrary I think techniques have just become part of him now that he wouldn't really be concentrating too hard on how to methodically overcome his opponent. There are many people who say this mode of combat is outdated but I disagree, there's more people now then ever being stabbed sometimes fatally on the street than there ever was and you don't hear of too many being killed by rear naked choke. So his silat and kali would still be very useful.
also a little known fact... he was the one who taught bruce lee the basics of the nunchucks. bruce then of course perfected the art of using them in movies. i always admired dan and this video was really a great homage to him and bruce.
Much Respects Master Inosonto. Spent a few years growing strong in early 80's as a DJ after practice each day Tae-kwon-do in Vallejo where Master Daniel's nephew Dennis was a DJ team playing gigs in some of the ruff and tuff neighborhoods of the Bay Area. Dennis L was a Steadfast Youth who was Humble and kind beyond belief. And a true Martial Artist as his Uncle Master Daniel. LuvUps these families
The many disciplines of the Martial arts offer many things of value. No one system is superior but the artist applies his own individual effort and heart and soul into the art and brings something unique to it.. if u have a man who's a 3rd degree black belt in The kwon do. And hapkido.. it's still a humbling thing for him to start off as a white belt in Judo.. but it will only benefit him to do that. Is a humble pure approach..
Mes grands respects à vous Maître Inosanto pour continuer de nous transmettre et nous montrer la beauté de cet art que Maître Lee, fondateur du Jeet Kune Do vous a transmis. N'oublions jamais. Longue vie à vous Maître.
Everyone has the right to his or her own opinion. its not exactly idiocy to disagree with some one. Some people may feel the that Bruce Lee was ingenious, innovative and a great student and( teacher of his martial arts(his perspective). some may think he was only an actor that made good fight movies. Either way, I'd say that no one can argue that Bruce Lee's JKD has a great lineage, from Guro Dan Inosanto, Master Tommy Carruthers ect... Keep in mind that ONLY a HATER disrespects people of accomplishment, while he or she hides behind a computer and offer negative criticism about others accomplishments but have no known accomplishments themselves.
Ruff Reef Bruce Lee was one of a kind. A person who valued himself and respected his tradition. Bruce's Jeet Kune do is still innovative yet not disrespectful to traditional martial arts and that's what makes it special. Jeet kune do does not mash up different arts and claim them but yet absorb the true techniques and apply them according to your own body mechanics and intentions. Keeping the techniques authentic and crisp not watered down imitations of real things. This is a very important fact concerning Jeet Kune Do. It completely separate Jeet Kune Do from MMA. Not to challenge the tradition but yourself to be better at using what you find effective and knowing yourself enough martially .. to not use techniques that you personally can not perform effectively and efficiently in a fighting environment. At no point does it state that the techniques are the problem but more so the practitioners ability to utilize that technique. The only judge is yourself and the jury is your body movements when practicing and applying those properly learned techniques
haters ? you, and I mean you hate the truth, you no different. gurus suppose to know differences and yet (gurus) stuck up and never tell truth. I have debunked hands trapping technique
Wow! My 12 and 13 year old kids just started training Kai Shin Jeet Kune Do under Guro TK Nelson, after 3 years of TKD, and years of Danzen Ryu Jujitsu. Guro TK Nelson is a long time student of Guro Inosanto. Now I really value their new Kai Shin Jeet Kune Do training. Thank you so much for this wonderful video. - Ed
Yes, I went to a seminar where Guro was teaching in late 2018, very impressive for a living legend. Incredible respect for sir. May sir have many more years of good health. The one of many take aways from his excellence was, keep training in as many art forms as desired. “ No one way is the absolute, He said, even sir Bruce would say he didn’t have all the answers”. Learn all the curriculum. And use what fits you. Like sir Bruce, that’s what worked for him. Train hard, Train often, my brothers and sisters.
Holding the pads is also a true and underrated skill, and I've seen a lot of grandmasters who never achieved this level of skill with it. Very impressive, and very good for the students.
Damm I can see Bruce lee spirit of divine knowledge speaking through Dan inosanto! Dan looks amazing n truly reveals the right side Bruce lees conception n words of wisdom a student reflects the character of a true humble master!, thank Dan for carrying the way of the intercepting fist!
Its true, the cameras back a day didn't have enough frame per second (fps) to capture and play-back, so they had to slower the frame rate to catch his movement.
Saw a documentary once that demonstrated it. One frame, no punch... next frame, punch completed. The director would tell him to slow down his punches. As I recall this is when he was beginning to make movies.
Mirko cro cop did that too in his fights the snap to his roundhousekicks were so fast that they almost looked like they went over the opponents head and he did it much, much harder.
jacob morgan I would love to believe that but guro Dan Inosanto was Bruce Lee's best friend and was the one who found lee after he.....you know. Very sensitive subject to this day with Inosanto and does not speak about it. He is a very respectful man and im lucky to have found a school whos instructors originate close back to lee himself. Inosanto comes to my school every year in June to teach 1 weekend. Amazing to see in person! Anyway, Bruce only certified him in JKD because of their relationship and his understanding and helping to create it. There is alot of info that was NOT made public and is only known by the people who knew or trained with him. Lee did teach others like Chuck Norris and alot of big names. Even Jackie Chan got to go a round with him in His old movies. His surviving daughter says the same thing and stands by Inosanto. Whether he certified anyone else or not, Chuck, Jackie, and countless others like bolo yeung, got to work with Lee personally and for that, anything I can get from his bloodline of instructors I would humbly accept. If you have any kind of access to anyone he trained with or their people, I would not make a big deal about who he certified. But in honesty, his daughter who is still around guarding her dad's estate and JKD name and affiliations, she will tell you herself that Lee only certified Inosanto and Inasanto helped Lee put JKD out there. Very few know the real story.
Bruce Lee started martial arts training basically at 16, moved to America by 18 and was already forming his own style and teaching other people martial arts by then. From a beginner to a master in 2 years and recognized as one of the world's best in 3-4. What a genius.
What an honor to have been under his tutelage. One of these days! One of these days! I will fulfill that top bucket list by just learning just 1 technique from someone who was trained by him. 🙏 Guro Inosanto
Not all of BL's famous friends are still alive. Many of them have passed from this life: Jesse Glover (the very first student BL taught), Steve McQueen, James Coburn, James Garner, Sharon Tate, and others.
Twenty-Four hours after his fight with Wong Jack Man, Bruce began to transition from his modified Wing Chun system (e.g., Jun Fan Gung Fu) to JKD. At this time period, Bruce was living in Oakland, and residing at the home of James Yimm Lee. Bruce and James were best friends, training partners, and they co-owned a kwoon in Oakland which taught Jun Fan Gung Fu. They also trained several students in James' garage and James was Lee's main sounding board in creating JKD. James was the first fully certified JKD instructor and he would later visit Bruce in Los Angeles to keep abreast of Lee's changes to his fighting method.
When I first started learning JKD I was 17 years old up until that time I was learning a martial art call Kung Fu San Soo I also had a black belt in Taekwondo at the time and was doing a little bit of boxing can I thought I knew what I was doing because most of the martial art that I was doing was the San Soo and Kung Fu San Soo was based mostly as a self-defense street fighting style it was kind of a scenario-based self-defense I then went to a local community college and met up with a guy by the name of Dennis blue and was later invited to Tim tackett's garage in Redlands CaliforniaI started my martial arts training at age four but really believe that the true start of my real training was at age 17 we're actually learned a greater range of sparring skills and real combat scenarios I continued with my boxing training and Muay Thai and started learning Kenpo later on in my mid-twenties but the JKD will always be my first real true love of martial arts
I feel it a great honor to be in the martial arts world. self defence only. jkd, wing chun, judo, jiujitsu aikido and many other styles. are a real blessing to those like myself to understand and live by it. martial arts becomes a lifestyle. thank you pioneers of martial arts. if it weren't for you paving the way I would not know how precious it is. Brightest blessings.
If you watch this video at full speed you are missing out. I watched it at half speed and I am missing out but try watching it at slower speeds and you will miss less as I am missing out on less than you are. Anyway it's a little creepy because Dan looks like the red room dude from Twin Peaks but it's worth it! Thanks for an incredible video :>
So far, this grandmaster has the fastest hands that I have ever seen. I don't think I have ever seen another human being with that kind of speed and precision.
Amazing Stacking & Building of, a never-ending ARTISTRY..! Mastery over the Most Respective look into NATURE'S force's & the Balances of Creation & Dissipation. Over all Energy's. An Artistry with in 1`s Self flowing of Ying & Yang. The Harmony of Creation's Balance of Naturally Flowing Energy's & Opposition of Natural Force's. MASTERPIECE'S are Never Finished.
Guro Dan Inosanto was always so humble, and receptive to Bruce helping and taking hits while Bruce refined JKD, and was knowledgeable in several other styles. Dan was a professor , friend, student of Bruce. Dan, Taky Kimura, and James Yim Lee were the only three who were appointed to teach Jun Fan Gung Fu. Grandmaster Insanto was another reason besides Grandmaster IP, why JKD is so good, Bruce blended so many styles..., Guro inosanto is 83 and still going.. I respect him so much!!
i really wish we could see someone goes into MMA fight and fight using JeetKuneDo and beat the crap out of those who laugh, saying it doesn't work in a real fight...
There is a 50 part series made in China/USA directed by Linda Lee, covers Bruce Lee's entire life, very much worth watching if you want to know him, called the legend of Bruce Lee or something like that, was on netflix a long time ago, may still be there.
Master Lee was always the reason I wanted to learn about marshal skills, he put the answers to the questions about his skills in riddles. once you know your self nothing is going to be unable to achieve. Not wanting to be better than the others just a quest to be the most polished or tunned version of yourself and never setting limits because one truly has no limits. Bruce's method of self and knowledge of your own flaws is the true way to becoming a well tuned instrument. Much respect Masters for the only opponent is one's battle with yourself and defeating the image of your own flaws is the true way to becoming a happy ☺.. my opinion
I don't know when this was filmed but Dan could be around 50 or so. He said when he trained with Bruce he (Bruce Lee)was easily twice as fast as him. Imagine that kind of speed focused 100%. That was the intensity.
This was at the Marina del Rey school, where he moved in the early 2000s. So Sifu Dan is in his late 60s / early 70s at this point, but looks like he's in his 50s.
Bout to be an honor to meet the Grand master this Sept in Minnesota for seminar going to be Can't wait know that's going to be something great to see and be a part of
