All I can say Jeff is that is awesome extremely awesome. I myself own a 1960 Oldsmobile 98 it looks great runs good floats down the highway like a land yacht. Keep up the good work and giving laughs. I saw your show here in Albuquerque New Mexico you were awesome you and your crew do an awesome job but still love your Yugo, car and I still think about your H1 hummer and what you said about it that was lotta laughs to keep up the good work. That car is worth money because of people like me, so you’re welcome. I’ve totaled over 300 Yugos through the mid 90’s. I used to jump a Yugo into a pile of Yugos at monster truck shows and dirt track events back in the 90’s. When those started getting harder to find, I went to an even worse car, the Dodge Colt. I took out about 200 of those as well. The Colt was far less reliable and you only had about a 30% chance that the good one would start for the jump.

Stupid fact on why the Pinto was given so many lies about why it caught fire. There was 1 event where the car exploded and damaged about 30 other vehicles. You could have blamed it on the car or more realistically blamed it on the fact that some gas station owner thought it was a good idea to sell gas for $0.07 a gallon because he got a great deal on gas because of someone fucking up the paperwork and a bunch of people used their Pintos to drive there because the Pinto had great space inside of them to be able to place a bunch of containers and well it was well seen by one of the survivors that said they saw the guy smoking and he put his cigarette out inside of a giant punch bowl filled with gasoline and the gun had nearly 300 gallons of gas inside the car and inside containers strapped to the roof and gasoline is very flammable especially when you have a shit ton of gasoline and you are smoking cigarettes and you put one cigarette out by plunging it into the gasoline. That car went up in flames like a fucking bomb because it was turned into a bomb because of gasoline and not the car. Stupidity of the drivers is why the car gets a bad rap while the car itself was not bad at all and in fact there are people who still drive them and several companies who still use their original Pintos for their businesses. There are over 500 vehicles with over 100,000,000 miles on there speedometers and they are all Pintos with 1 having been used constantly with nearly 0 maintenance and has traveled over 15 billion miles for its company as the main work vehicle and instead of flying their employees still drive that 1 vehicle because it does not die and needs nearly no maintenance and when it needs maintenance its new brakes and new tires and gas and oil changes and 7 times its had its spark plugs replaced in the last almost 70 years. Yea the thing has had no real maintenance because it does not die ever and is a really really good vehicle. Aside from dumbasses driving with open gas containers and missing the ash tray and plunging their cigarettes into gasoline there is no safety issues at all.

Well technically when you are driving you are not at home and technically kids should not be driving in the first place because they are too young to be allowed to drive so in reality you should have said "Middle age teenagers and adults do not do that on the road.".

We purchased one brand new in 1991. There were several changes by that time compared your 87. The engine displacement was increased to 1.3 liters, and the carb induction system was replaced with a direct multi point Bosch fuel injection system. The transaxle was also changed to a 5 speed. We bought it for $4100, and drove it over 150,000 miles before some electrical gremlins sent it to a friend as a parts car. The only issues we had were the window cranks broke several different times, the shift linkage separated once, and the fuel pump went out 3 three times--twice under warranty. The fuel mileage, while driving over a mountain pass back and forth to work, averaged 45 MPG. Hard to argue with that, even today. Probably the best part, is that it was INVISIBLE to cops. There were several times I was bombing down the interstate at extra-legal speeds when a State Patrol going the other way flipped a U-turn and fell in behind me. Letting off on the gas and coasting down to legal speed, I could see the cop in the mirror double checking his radar, looking at the car, shaking his head, and turning off. Good times.

@@midnightelectric1 there are more jokes for yugo like: My electronics on yugo got broken. Than other guy asks: what electronics ? How to tripple value of yugo ? Fill in gas tank and buy new front tires. I guess you now know how to multiply value of yugo by 4 times. This is good one: In Japan, car manufacturers had sealant check: they put cat inside car, turn off air conditioning, close all doors and leave car for whole night. If in morning cat inside car is dead - that means car is sealed well, if cat is still alive than car is leaking air. For yugo we had lower standard: they put cat inside car, turn off air conditioning, close all doors and leave it for night. In morning if cat is insde car, than car is sealed well. If cat is gone, than car is not sealed well.

Oh man, Jeff, thank you for the throwback to the past. This was our first car, my mother bought it in 1990 when I was 11 and it was awsome, never mind the pople saying it is the worst car ever... It had all that it needed to have at that time. That tool kit was quality piece and it will not brake even with a hammer, not as this new poor excuse of the tools. I broke a renault made one yesterday trying to unwind a lug nut... wish I still had that one :) The only problem was that it is tall and 14" wheels are not wide enougth so the curves are a bit risky to take driving above 70km/h but once you are used to it will come naturally... there are still nice looking pieces here in Yugoslavia but thank you for this video.

My dad is a retired mechanic and is almost 72 and is from Yugoslavia. I bought him an 88 Yugo as a gift back in February and he loves it. The car is almost identical to the one in the video including the exterior and interior colors. But ours came with dealer installed air conditioning. We spend weekends tinkering with it and fixing minor stuff. The number one reason that so many Yugos were junked was because of timing belt failure. The replacement interval is very short (60k miles) and the belt would snap and the internals would crash. The car would be towed to the mechanic and the repair estimates were often close to being more than the value of the vehicle. Zastava Motors built over 800,000 Yugos and sold them worldwide. In America the parts were hard to find because most people didn’t realize that the car is basically a Fiat (127,128,x19) so therefore most Fiat parts can be installed on a Yugo. Also Jeff, I noticed your black/red rub strips need replacing. I have a set I can sell you if you’re interested. Enjoy it!

OK, spruce needles - but they were sharp enough that they would pierce the tires. Even at that, she got over 90,000 miles out of her Yugo! The problem was getting replacement parts! Even something as simple as an alternator or exhaust parts -- rust is a big killer here in the Great Lakes area! Also, a co-worker had one, and he drove his over 140,000 miles! I would often say you had a $10,000 vehicle at the seats that wouldn't recline, I have a $3,500 and I can stretch out in my recliner car seats.i could fill up for $6.00.

The biggest issue I heard of with them at the time wasn't so much that they were bad, it was more that there wasn't any real parts support. One friend of mine had one and when he needed parts it was difficult to source them. The story he was given a few times was that Zastava had basically used up the parts supply and the company that made that part was now on the UN banned list so no new parts could be imported. The other issue was that they still ran a carb and in 90 they failed the emissions testing and had to recall most of their cars.

If you knew where to go there were parts. When they stopped selling the cars a dealer in Henderson Nevada bought the parts supply from Yugo dealers all over the country. He had parts for years to sell.

Only thing was every time we went somewhere, and I mean literally every time we went somewhere together, whether it was the gym, the mall, restaurant, where ever...whenever we came out to leave, there would be another Rabbit nearby, usually in the spot right beside us. The old "rabbits multiplying" trope became a regular laugh for us and our friends.

Be happy you have the updated version of the Yugo. I was at the Newark Shipyard in late 1984-early 1985 timeframe when the first ship arrived with these pieces of junk and I can tell you something the media nor the sellers will admit to, the first cars to arrive were ALL sent back because they were beyond substandard. The engine was a 2-cycle smoke machine and the front fenders were made of a material similar to OSB, yes glued and pressed wood chips. When they took the first ones off the ship there was an inspector there from the NJDOT who stopped the unloading until an inspection was done, they waited for engineers from the Federal DOT, the NTSB and the NHTSA to inspect them. They got rejected and the ship captain was told to reload and take them back. Boy was he mad… A few months later they sent the ones with the original US Specifications that did pass and were sold starting in 1985. 🤪🤣😆
