The fact that Mr. Jeffery Hunter played the role of Captain Pike for episode is amazing. That so many not only remembered the impact of that performance, that many more today know who Captain Pike is because of him. There is no other.
I loved him as a teenager. What a beautiful man. He left us too soon. I just watched this again as I had forgotten what happened. I cried again. What a sad ending to a great actor! Thank you for this video.
Jeffrey Hunter was devistatingly handsome and such a talented actor. I thought he was so underrated. Jeffrey was brilliant as Jesus in King of Kings. He deserved an Oscar for that performance. He was taken way too soon and his sons were still so young. I'm sure that terrible accident, on set contributed to his tragic death. Thank you for that moving tribute and I love your gorgeous Southern accent! Cheers from Australia! 💖
Currently watching Star Trek for the first time and am so disappointed that he was only in the pilot! What a gorgeous and talented man, may he rest in peace.
When i was 8 years old, 65 years ago, i was watching Jeffery Hunter filming in London a scene just off of the 7 Dials in Covent Garden, he saw me and said 'Hi what's your name'. I told him and he gave ,me a silver dollar. I have never forgotten his kindness and beautiful eyes, even now at the age of 74. Great man with humility.
He was such an extraordinary actor. Gawd, his eyes were so piercing, magnetic and spellbinding. What a gorgeous, handsome specimen of a man. Rest In Peace, Jeffery Hunter. Gone but never forgotten. The mold was broken when you left this world.
As usual an excellent portrayal of J. Hunter. I have seen a couple of his movies and must say a great actor and handsome to boot. He passed on so young. He also seemed like a pure gentleman.
I met him in person in Madrid in a movie-studio, a western where my aunt was the hairdresser of the stars of the movie. I could not believe his eyes so beautiful.
I was born in 1964, so his career was well before my time, but I enjoyed this bio and sad to see of his early passing ... and, yes, the fella sure was one heck of a looker!!
@@vadamsable After I read some comments, yours, too, I watched the vid. And boy oh boy was that man handsome!! But then I got to 1:39 and I couldn't believe how much he looked just like Ray Liotta in that pic!! lol Yea...this guy sure was handsome!!! ;)
@@vegasjill21 Yes, he has those piercing blue eyes like Ray Liotta. I remember him most from that early Star Trek appearance. It was so small, but I remember it.
I remember him of course as re-runs, but as Jesus on King of Kings! He was a man who would bring in! His attraction to everyone was imposing. He had the looks, the voice, the kindness, and the strength. He was a powerful entity. If he were alive today he would be 92 years old.
Mr Skinner, you are truly a Master of your craft. I remember him as the "Original Captain" of Star Trek as Captain Christopher Pike. Thank you for a pleasurable listening experience!
I liked Jeffry. He was the same age as Our Lord and Savior when He died, 33. So, what was the complaint about age? But, Jeffry was handsome. His portrayal as Captain Pike was outstanding as were the other cast members, such as Susan Oliver.
Thomas Pick, you're right, Age shouldn't have been an issue in King of Kings, but that color shot of a Blonde Jesus there is SO distracting, no matter how accurate any screenwriting or Jeffrey Hunter's excellence as an actor.
Diane Dnum I’m a big Ray Liotta fan and would agree that he has lovely eyes. However, I can’t agree that he looks almost like Jeffrey Hunter. Just my opinion. For me they are both handsome, and unique in their own way.
In The Searchers, my absolute favorite movie, it started with Jeffery looking like someone about 16-17 years old, and as the movie progressed, he started growing up. At the end, he had grown up into a fine man. I'm always listening to my RU-vid playlists of my favorite songs. I look at comments from The Searchers, and there is no mention of Martin Pawley. Jeffery did as good a part in that movie as John Wayne did. ........ Jerry (in Tucson)
Once again you've given us an another out standing narrated biography, thank you & please keep up the great work! I truly enjoy listening to your voice but you also educate me everytime!👍🇺🇸
I was just 6 y.o. when KING OF KINGS came out. The movie truly inspired me to become a Christian and follow our KING OF KINGS. Thank Jerry for this video.
Life is so short. Everyone's time comes, some sooner than others. I remember seeing him in different movies over the years. I never realized that he'd been gone so long. RIP J.H.
Thank you so much for presenting Jeffrey Hunter. I always loved him and The Searchers will forever be one of my favorite.movies. I have it on DVD. You know, the Star Trek people took that pilot and cut out sections and embedded the story with the regular Star Trek in a 2 part program. I think that Spock was a carry over from the pilot. I was glad to see him in it. I was very sad when he died, being so young and obviously not receiving adequate medical care in Spain. Had he had that he probably would not have died, at least so young.
Always a wonderful presentation Jerry! Much appreciate you and hope you continue to inform us of those we have held dear to our hearts. Much love and respect, thank you Jerry Skinner!
He was drop dead gorgeous and a great actor. I loved him in the The Longest Day. He was good as Captain Christopher Pike. I would what would have happened if his version of Star Trek have of been picked up by NBC. Rest In Peace, Mr. Hunter.
@@indy_go_blue6048 You are wrong, Majel Barrett was also in the original pilot, as well as on the regular series. She went on to marry Gene Rodenberry.
I adored Mr. Hunter. As a young person he was what my brain told me was the most perfect man. I admired him, but knew little about him or his life. In that time period, we did not have the gossip trash like we do now. Thank you Jerry Skinner for telling me about the man and his life.
It was his second wife that spoiled his chance of being Captain on Star Trek. She felt TV was beneath him, so that is why, and maybe along with a request for more $$ Shatner was chosen. I always felt he was as good as Shatner and would have been terrific as Capt. Pike, as he was great in the Cage pilot. Rest in peace Mr. Hunter.
Thank you so very much for this truly poignant story of Jeffrey Hunter. It is marvellous. And . . . kudos you as a narrator. I particularly enjoy your use of future tense in your narration.
OMG! He is a gorgeous man. Just look at those big beautiful light eyes, perfect nose shape, handsome face and a sweet smile that bright up the room. I swear, he is just perfect!
Just think he would have been 93 years old today had he stillmy dad is currently 82 and doing pretty well for an 82-year old this guy was 11 years older than my own father and yeah 10 to wonder what he would it look like today had he lived to be 93????
He was the org Captain on Star Trek. He got a chance to do a movie so he took that instead of the Star Trek series. He was a great actor. He also played Jesus in King of Kings.
I use to like jeffrey hunter. He was a good actor and always wondered what happened to him afther 1969. He was the first captain of the Enterprise. ( star trek the cage ) RIP
I met Hunter while he was filming the 1968 movie, "The Private Navy of Sergeant O'Farrell" starring Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The three of them were gracious enough to visit the wounded troops at Rodriguez U.S. Army Hospital, where I was the Adjutant, on their day off. Hunter was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity in college, as was I, so we hit it off. He was very friendly and conversant with everyone and of course attracted a lot of attention from the nurses. Hope had great pull with the military and when he needed a WW II type sub to be docked by the make believe dock on a parking lot turned into a beach, he got one.
Always though it was a travesty that Captain Pike was replaced...He was the best of the Star Trek captains until Jean Luc Pichard...When I was a very young child, I was taken to see Mr Hunter in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and compared it to "King of Kings" and found myself intrigued by both the acting and the directing of the latter film...it became the awakening of my interest in film and stage work which, some 57 years later I am looking toward retirement in 2020...still working in the field triggered by Jeffrey Hunter and his films. As always Mr Skinner has given us a wonderful mini biography of people that have made an impact n the world. His narration, research and presentation is always of the highest value...I look forward to every one of them.
A very handsome man I did not know much about, passed away the year and month I graduated high school, brought a tear. Thanks Jerry for the hard work and research you do!
The best man to portray Jesus in "King of Kings." I remember seeing the film at a very young age. A tragic loss at such a young age of 42, same age as Elvis. Such a handsome man.
I grew up watching Hunter as Jesus in King of Kings. The music, that intro especially, can still give me chills. It was not until later in life when I saw Robert Powell portray Christ in Jesus of Nazareth that I no longer saw him as Jesus in my mind (and we know Jesus didn't have blue eyes as either men did), but they both did a wonderful job for sure.
I watch The Searchers and King of Kings whenever I can. He was so watchable, mesmerisingly handsome and a good solid actor. It just goes to show how dangerous acting can be.
THANK - YOU SO MUCH MR. JERRY, The love and work that you share with us on these classic actor's / actresses, is beautiful, warm, and caring. Many thanks, and much love and respect to you Sir......🌷
Once again Mr Skinner a superb narrative, you are very talented, your research is second to none, and a joy to watch your material ,kind regards from England .
A handsome Irish man. He was 2 years older than my Mom. A really good actor, a tragic series of events, he departed in his prime. May he know eternal positive energies. ✨
I remember as a kid in the 60s that Jeffrey Hunter was the Captain of the Enterprise in the pilot movie. I liked him a lot more than William Shatner...a tragedy that he wasn't chosen to continue his role as captain of the Enterprise. Thanks Jerry!
Jerry Skinner video?!? I can forget about going to bed right now.... Jerry: as always, you produce FABULOUS content and I'll ALWAYS sing your praises and offer my most-sincere thanks for your efforts..!!!!!
JEFFREY HUNTER was one of my fave movie actors. It was so sad how he died. I will always cherish & remember him in his role in KING OF KINGS. He was a very handsome gentleman. RIP, Jeffrey. We, your faithful fans, love you very much!
WoW..I'll never forget his piercingly beautiful eyes, which gave me pause to notice him immediately..loved his acting also. I got hurt on the job and was out of work for 1-1/2 months and became hooked on General Hospital, with Emily McLachlan, "Jessie" being my favorite character. I recall hearing somewhere that she took Jeff's death extremely hard. Emily grew old very quick..and seemed to noticeably change after his death. They were married for such a short period of time, but I understand that she was very much in love with Jeff Hunter..soooooo very sad. As always..great film Mr. Skinner..love your voice. Perhaps a film on Emily McLachlen?
He was great! I loved him in The Searchers, which is also one of my favorite movies. I still watch it once or twice a year. I also love that they took the pilot of Star Trek and interwove it with a plot in the original Star Trek. He was handsome and he was good. Thanks for reminding everyone about him.
Thank you so much, Jerry. I´ve been watching all your videos the last 3 days and I learned so much. What a great work you are doing. Regards from Germany
Beautiful music selection. I loved Jeffrey’s performance in King of Kings. He was the same age as Our Lord, 33. Captain Pike was the best Star Trek with Susan Oliver. Perhaps an adaptation of the Shangrila story, it was well written and acted. Those Thillosian heads were great makeup costumes. What a handsome man!
Tod Hunter was very much like his Dad in looks, I dont know about the other children. A very short life, so sad. Thank you Jerry yet again for your wonderful narration, told with sincerity and concern, as usual. You rock !! big big hugs from the UK xxxxxx
I remember when he passed. So young. I think they brought him back as a guest star to Star Trek as the former caption who was confined to a wheel chair. That was a good episode.
patty helen it wasn’t Jeffrey Hunter. It was some other actor playing an injured Pike. They used parts of the original (unaired) pilot to flesh out the story.
Excellent biographical sketch on the life and movie career of "Jeffrey Hunter." "Jeff" Hunter has long been one of my favorite actors. I saw him in The Searchers on the big screen at the time the movie came out. I've watched The Searchers another half dozen or more times over the years on VHS tape and later on DVDs. I also know Jeff Hunter from Red Skies of Montana. As a former resident of Missoula, and having spent over eight years in the USDA Forest Service (with half a year on a fire crew), I was and remain quite the fan of Red Skies of Montana. As a former Navy man, I also like Jeff Hunter in Sailor of the King. To this day, I've not seen a single movie with Jeffrey Hunter in it which I have not enjoyed. This man was a marvelous actor! In many ways he reminds me of another first-rate actor, Tom Selleck. These two men, like few other men, have the looks and personality that attracts most women. This is another fine piece of historical entertainment you have put together and put on RU-vid, Jerry. Thank you, very much! Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.
Great documentary. Thanks for putting it together. It cleared up many questions I had about Jeffrey Hunter. Even though I love William Shatner as Captain Kirk, I just can't help but wonder what Star Trek would have been like with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike for the entire series. He was a special talent!
Correction. The first Trek pilot wasn't picked up. But ,in a rare move,CBS ordered a second pilot and told Roddenberry to make it more action adventure. The studio told Roddenverry to recast. Rodenberry had to fight to keep Nimoy.
Lord have mercy: That accident during filming was the beginning of the end. Consequently, any type of fall by the head injuring the skull can be deadly serious. I truly admire how he went to other countries to find work. Very noble 'cause drowning the reasonable disappointment in alcohol never helped anyone. If any thing it HEIGHTENS the problem. One minute a full prosperous career. The next minute all of the cast including himself let go from the Original Star Trek Series. Hollywood hasn't changed much.
It's sad and strange that after the pilot episode is for more money. And that caused the studio to fire the whole pilot crew. And restart the the series with a new diverse crew. That I feel started is down fall. It was just very bad decision to ask for more money at the time. You could have waited when he established himself as an invaluable actor in the series. We all make many terrible decisions in life. God rest his soul his family his children. Man he was such a handsome man..
Wow, I never knew what happened to Jeffrey Hunter , only that he disappeared from the screen. How tragic. He made a number of good movies besides the ones mentioned. I remember him as Frank James opposite Robert Wagner as Jesse James. Also I remember 'Sailor of the King' and his role in 'The Longest Day' , 'King of Kings' . He was a very good actor. May he rest in peace.
I really liked Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike in the original Star-trek pilot movie. That was a surrealistic sci-fi that was years ahead of its time. Even though by the time I first saw that episode, it was decades after it was first released, it still looked great and not dated. I especially liked the scene where Captain Pike was in a world of illusion by his advanced alien captors that he was back on his ranch with his favorite horse. Jeffrey Hunter would have definitely given more weight and seriousness to the role of a young Captain of USS Enterprise and he looked the part.
