I haven’t been to a meeting in over 5 years, and haven’t ever really been triggered by much since then, but amazing how just a few seconds of a song brought on so many flashbacks of the days i would be crying to myself during the song because i had no way out… Damn

Every once in a while, an old kingdom melody will pop into my head for some unknown reason, and it’s extremely irritating. The worst kingdom melody of all? “We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, we speak out in fearlessness”. I hated that one more than any other. Probably because I despised growing up as a JW.

I was in choirs in school and i sang my little heart out only to dial it down to a weird mumble at night and on the weekends. God forbid I had a moment and forgot. The glares and pats were diminishing. Unsurprisingly, it was joyless... just like everything else they do.

Very interesting video. There is a Spanish scholar who did a PhD dissertation on this topic (JWs and Music). If I remember correctly, one of the problems Rutherford had with music was the fact that several of the sonsgs the JWs used to sing in his time were hymns written and composed by Evangelicals. This is very interesting, because this probably means that not only did the JWs admit in those years that they were allowed to pray to Jesus and taught that Jesus had to be worshipped. This was not something purely theoretical: they used to worship Jesus in such practical ways as praying to him and singing songs praising him. The Bible Students of the first decades were a religion that was completely different in its essence from the religion they are now.

I remember when I was really young and a new songbook came out - they actually said this when they brought it out. That too many of the songs were like the worldly churches and needed to be changed. My grandmother told me they used to have a songbook that had all the good old hymns, such as Amazing Grace, which she loved.

The original "elders" of the early days and the "elder arrangement" of today are very different. The original elders were, by popular vote of the local members of the individual congregants, elected to that position. Rutherford did not like this kind of autonomous control of the individual groups and established the position, of "company servant", in each congregation. This man was "appointed" directly by the New York headquarter to help centralize the control by Rutherford. That position was called a "Company Servant, and remained the name of that position up through the 1940's. That position was renamed the "Congregation Servant", later the "Presiding Overseer", and today is recognized as the COBE, in effect. The term "Company Servant" was rather appropriate because, in effect he was to be a "company man", of the Watchtower. The local groups were called "companies". instead of congregations. A few years after that position was established, the "Elder" position was eliminated in an organizational proposition, submitted to all of the local congregations, with everyone one EXPECTED to vote to go along with Watchtower to do so. Many left at that time because of this power take over. The more current "elder arrangement" is now made up of ALL COMPANY MEN, appointed by New York Watchtower headquarters. Theocracy, no democracy in this organization, or maybe AUTOCRACY is more appropriate. What a wonderful New World it will be. 0

This is quite funny. I'm sure that using songs is a marketing management basic class. Products sell because they have a catchy toon to go along with it, ie Slinky, Lucky Charms, Trix, Weeble Wobbles and the list goes on. That's what the Bible Students did and what Watchtower has been doing since. Also you are right, there still is that faction that split off from the original Bible Students and they are called Rusellites. I wonder if they still sing too, LOL.

But there's another flipflop they fail to mention. In the 1966 and 1984 songbooks, they tried to get rid of songs not written by jws. But in the 2009 and 2016 songbooks, they replaced "jehovah's dedicated ones" with "my prayer of dedication", plagiarizing lyrics by frances havergal.

the only problem for Jehovah's Witnesses is not to take as an example what Jesus instituted in their memory, which was to eat and drink the emblems in the Lord's Supper! for it is one baptism and one hope of eternal life. Ephesians 4: 4-6 note 4- There is one body and one spirit, just as you were called in a hope to which you were called; 5- one Lord, one faith and one baptism; 6- God, unique and Father of all, who is above all, and through all and in all.

The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is no longer a traditional publishing company parading as a religion. They have mastered the business of organized religion by leveraging the tax codes in all the countries they operate in, no different than the Catholic Church. All money making businesses must change with the times to stay profitable, this is the real reason for "new light". Since The Society is now a top quality audio/visual production company, the theory of "new light" demands a Bible-based name change, "Holywood".

I would love to tell you the story of my girlfriend who was a JW believer (yes we were in a same sex relationship) and how she of course couldn’t be a participant because of that, yet she still believed and would talk with the witnesses that came to our house. (I doubt they knew she was gay or they wouldn’t bother). I would say to her “They don’t want you, what does that tell you?” But she wouldn’t listen and had all of her Watchtower flyers and JW books. Plus she loved her beer (I’m talking about her in the past tense because unfortunately she passed in 2012), so she would have had to give up beer plus me to go be a JW. Thankfully they didn’t have that strong of a hold on her, but just enough hold that she held their beliefs. The crazy part is that no one else in her family were JWs, she just came to believe that this was the truth all on her own. I have no idea why. I’m an atheist and I was back then too, so it was all very frustrating.

No family were...j w Yes, the group does hold out some fascination, for example I grew up in south africa under apartheid...and to their credit in almost every way they (J W organization) wouldn't submit slavishly to that apartheid-system , including many who were were jailed for refusing to fight in its defence

Russell Wouldn’t be a Jehovah’s Witness. The name came after his death, including major doctrinal and organizational changes. That is ignored though, “Let’s talk about our roots, and how we ruined it”. Large man made organizations were/are what people need to get away from.

When I quit the JWs 25 years ago I found a small church by the Faith of Abraham, their pastor was a bethelite for 40 years. They weren't trinitarian, and were soul sleepers so I was interested. In their hymnal they had four or five kingdom melodies lol. I wonder if they ever got sued for it. They even had "Jehovah our rock, our strength and our might" and "we thank you Jehovah"

I, and many others, understand how you feel because we experienced similar authoritarian behavior from our own childhoods. But it would be better (easier on your emotions) if you could learn to forget about that by shifting your thoughts to more pleasant matters. Why let unpleasantness occupy your mind… I know that it’s easier said than consistently done, but it’s simply a matter of forming a new (better) habit; soon it’ll become automatic, as are all habits…just saying, as an exjw.

@@cygnustsp Yes, just avoid dwelling on the unpleasant aspects of the past and stay thankful that you’re free now. Imagine a prisoner, once set free, reliving in his mind the years that he spent in prison… No one would want to do that, so maybe it would help to think of this analogy, mental/emotional emprisonment is even MORE damaging than the physical one. And our daily existence is primarily in our minds; you just need to form new ways of recalling memories. By the way, I understand that you weren’t soliciting advice, but since you mentioned therapy, please understand that you CAN do this without formal counseling, and all the accompanying time, effort, and expense. Just needs someone to help you remember your goal(s). All the best to you, Cheers!

I was never a JWs and only agreed to Bible Studies while in college with JWs. I don't understand how anyone with critical thinking could become a JWs. The JWs Bible studies teachers did not answer any of my critical thinking questions...not even One. JWs teachings are beyond ridiculous. And I am confident in saying JWs don't truly believe in Jehovah and Jesus like they claim they do. JWs are in it for the hope of never dying and living in a paradise Earth to see dead love ones.

@@anonymousprofessor8866 Many of us were third or fourth generation JWs and were never taught critical thinking skills. I was lucky...I was an introvert who loved to read and my dad, though a second generation JW, encouraged me to read. Reading many different books and analyzing them is how we learn critical thinking. Needless to say, none of my birth family are JWs anymore. I also think that many people (such as my grandparents) because JWs during the great depressions, when their lives were complete shite - who wouldn't want to dream of a paradise on earth when your children are starving?

It was 20 years ago when I was a JW. It was stressed to us to not put our trust in men, to follow men, it was supposed to be following Jehovah. It seems to be just the opposite today. It's look at the GB, do what they say, obey the GB, oh look let's build this legend of Charles Russell. It's all follow these men. These men are Jehovah.

BH, it's like a different religion now. 20+ years ago it was, as you said, all about knowledge, dogma, rhetoric -- the written & spoken word. JWs were expected to read, read, read & hone their scriptural knowledge. Now it's music & 'feelings' -- just a few steps away from being a charismatic church. I'm surprised more JWs from my generation & older haven't left already. But I guess that just goes to show how committed they were to what they believed was the truth. In fact they are committed only to the Governing Body & would gladly follow these men into Hell.

I had not paid any attention to those con men for probably 17-18 years but then I was scrolling through streaming channels and saw JW channel, I was like, no way in hell there is a JW channel! To my surprise, it was. I called my family who are also out of the organization and said, "You will never believe this..." JWs are acting just like the TV evangelist they told us where so false. It's just so different.

The Watchtower media department is extremely clever in editing. In the song recording they play the narrator's commentary overlays (blocks out) the 1st line, because it would become extremely obvious why they kept moving the worship "goal posts" ... "All hail the power of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall. Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all." (Jesus later gets demoted/ relegated to 2nd division .... and by 2020s practically replaced entirely now by the Governing Body.)

Never thought about this with singing, the more you dig into this, the greater is the manipulation and less the biblical base. I always wondered why I never met psychiatrists between JWs. You can find many that work in construction (who knows why...) and cleaning. Especially the people born in "the truth" (note my lowercase). Occasionally you get some graduated, some lawyer or IT guy, but never ever met a psychiatrist. I believe a psychiatrist would recognize such manipulations in 10 seconds. So ex-JW can do, but only when you're out. I'd love to see a video about that!

@@ohgawd I wouldn’t be surprised, but to me, as a raised-in exjw, when I was still in, it would never occur to me that any jw would ever want to enter such a profession, in view of their intense indoctrination… Just my opinion, for what it’s worth…
