What is the cartoon about?

In the cartoon, Jerrica and her sister run a home for orphan girls. Just when they run low on funds, they discover that their recently deceased father (their mom died earlier) left them musical instruments and a sentient computer that can generate holograms to give Jerrica a secret identity (as well as generating different outfits for the others). Jerrica starts a band, the Holograms, and becomes 'Jem' when in public. When they get a contract, they have money to continue running the orphanage. Many of the episodes involve their rival band, the 'Misfits', trying to interfere with the Holograms and become more famous. One of the other recurring themes involves Jem/Jerrica working to make sure her identity remains a secret. None of this Hannah Montana, after school special crap.

When this trailer popped up on my search list I thought, "Wow! I wanna see what Synergy looks like in a live action movie!" Then I watched this... RIP Jem and The Holograms. You were a gem of the late '80s.

83 episodes and her real identity was never revealed as I recall. And the series concluded, it did not get cancelled before a planned ending. Hell of a message of deception.

It was probably too close to the original, since they did everything imaginable to make this nothing like the cartoon.

***** SAME!! I was born Oct 18 1999 and I first saw jem and the holograms on the Hub channel (when it was called Hub) and I fell in love with it. One of the main reasons why I got hooked was because of Shana (I'm black). She was so real to me. She wasn't given straight hair a thin nose and thin lips. Also, she wasn't given extremely exaggerated features that black cartoon characters where normally given. Her nose was realistically wide, her lips were full and her hair was natural! The fact that they casted a mixed girl for the role of a full black woman is ridiculous to me.

Wonderful as all that is I'm amazed it's not the first worst movie... I've seen black and white b movies with better acting and plot structure. 15 thousand though, God even seeing a dime spent in this travesty is tragic.

+Da Boz Well, the three movies "above" it are Saw 10th Anniversary, Delgo, and Oogieloves and the BIG Balloon Adventure, so..... ;-) BTW, let's not get too excited - one of the big reasons Jem flopped is the studio clearly decided to "let it" flop, hence almost no marketing. And I'm sure the people who made it (John Chu and Jason Blum) are assuming that's the _entire_ reason it did so badly. They think it's a "good" movie, and are incapable of understanding that they have literally _killed_ Jem. This was the one shot we had at a Jem revival--the one shot at building it into a "franchise" like GI Joe and Transformers, and they blew it for everybody. They'll move onto their next projects, which will make 10 times their $1 million budgets, and will be "back on top" (well, the butt-end of the top, anyway) with Jem a distant memory. They are incapable of understanding that if this movie had been done the right way (and they had access to thousands of people on the internet who were desperate to tell them how to do it - they even claimed that's how they were going to make the movie, in case anybody forgot...) , it would have made much more money, because Jem fans would have helped. This is what happens when lying slimeballs make a movie out of something they have no interest in. Can't wait to see what the next one will be!

But I worked at a family movie studio for 16 years and my judgment might be different than yours. To each his own. Hey, if you're looking for something more dark, check out Westworld. So good!

ALSO, a computer called "Synergy" that would transform Jerrica into Jem. I was telling a joke because this trailer is CLEARLY not using any of the things i listed before and is almost making this exactly like Hannah Montana was: A teenage girl who becomes a pop sensation and has to live two separate lives and deals with basic teenage stuff instead of evil bad guys.

I don't think the film adaptation should be one-to-one with the original, but this is far too different; I think when we hear 'Jem' the first thing we want to see is magical transformation...

anime fanatic I don't mind creative liberties , but it bothers me (at least by what this trailer is showing) that the unique core elements that made Jem what it is are being taken away. Then, in its place appears to be a horribly cliche plot that lacks any awareness of how cliche it really is. So even if I tried to see this trailer as its own thing (with Jem's name removed) I can't see myself liking this (I'll admit the GI Joe movies are a guilty pleasure of mine XD).

Ignoring the whole issue of how little or much it is like Jem what is shown in this trailer as its own thing looks horribly clichéd and uninspired. If it ends up that there is a great deal more to the movie than this trailer then I will blame the makers of this trailer for making the movie look like utter garbage.

Probably a few have, but not enough to warrant a bigger budget to make a more faithful adaptation of the cartoon. I'm sure Hasbro meticulously researched the box office potential of a Jem film. They didn't even really want to do one until the director raised funds via crowdfunding, which is never a lot of money. Filmmaking is always a long, risky financial venture.

RocStarr913 IDK, I think they were wrong about the potential of this movie. My daughter just started watching Jem on Netflix and she loves it and made me sit down to watch it with her. So when I saw this was being made I got hyped for her. And then this trailer... no we will not be going to see it. Jem is like Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj mixed with Charlie XCX they could have really went big with this one. I for one would have loved being able to purchase the dolls and accessories. Last year for Halloween and Christmas I spent hundreds of dollars on Frozen dolls, costumes and related toys. I would gladly swipe my credit card for a band of multi-cultural dolls who rock. I would have loved to dress my daughter in full on 80s glam for Halloween. This movie does not seem to be for children, or the 80s babies who loved it. So who are they marketing to? Tweens? I hope even they don't fall for this. Transformers and TMNT, despite their shortcomings still made movies that were recognizable by old fans and got a whole new generation excited about the characters. TMNT and transformers toys are big sellers so I don't understand why Hasbro wouldn't want to give girls super cool heroes like Jem and the Holograms to play with.

I think they gave Hasbro the finger and did whatever they wanted to do to make it however Universal wanted to.
